View Full Version : carbon fiber cold air intake
jdm_eg6 01-06-2004, 03:45 AM im currently developing a full carbon fiber cold air intake, was actually designing it before the scion was even available in ca. but put it on hold because i didnt feel they were growing in popularity, at least not the performance side.. every scion i ever saw was bling bling.. (mainly xb)
so i will be finsihed with a prototype in the next 30 days and will have dyno numbers.
im shooting for 5-8 hp.. i know its going to be hard because these engines are powerless..
i dont have any pics but the design is similar to a j's racing (honda / acura) intake, but its actually cold air. the design actually uses a large diamiter filter and tubing (4-5 inch) and tapers down causing the air to be compressed (sort of)
<center>http://www.jdmspecperf.com/products/js/cfintake.jpg
thats the j's for a civic.
so my question is if it makes at least a 5 hp increase and price is @ $140-180 with filter would anyone buy it?
bBted 01-06-2004, 04:23 AM looks nice...this is the first CF intake i ever seen...
any issue when they get hot?? just wondering...
HotBox 01-06-2004, 04:28 AM is it real CF? is the quality good? and as ted stated any issue when theyre hot? is it designed to fot like the injen or aem? hmm no other questions i can tihkn of but for that price and if it good quality CF and makes at least 4lb/ft or torque im sold
jdm_eg6 01-06-2004, 04:32 AM since its still in R&D i wont know the exact numbers i can get out of it..
the weave will be tight, its a 2 piece mold
it will withstand the tempatures in the enginebay without damaging the clearcoat or c/f in any way (they use c/f to make intake manifolds for f1 cars)
and it will have a cf (or alumium) braket to secure the intake to the stock bolts where the airbox was removed from..
it will be a really nice piece..
imstill trying to decide if i should have the sensor bracket made of c/f or aluminum.. if its aluminum i can probably get it anodized red or blue
HotBox 01-06-2004, 04:46 AM do you know if its going to sit like the aem or the injen? and if yall end up making the sensor bracket out of aluminum try to shoot for more colors than just red and blue it would make more people happy but i say try to go CF. cant wait til its finished keep us posted please
jdm_eg6 01-06-2004, 04:52 AM i cant say i dont have either injen or aem. i guess youll have to compare when the product is finished
showpaojoe 01-06-2004, 04:59 AM how much?
bBted 01-06-2004, 05:43 AM u should build the sensor in cf too, in order to match the whole cf theme...
i also concern about the price
hahajoey 01-06-2004, 06:06 AM haha... 5hp.. i think some people will beg to differ. =X
quick question. will the cf be DRY carbon fiber?
like the nice stuff? or some fiberglass crap
with a cf top layer on it?
UrbanDrum 01-06-2004, 09:32 AM Will you personally install every intake you sell so we don't over tighten the MAF sensor :?:
UrbanDrum 01-06-2004, 09:33 AM :P
TheRedBox 01-06-2004, 06:52 PM not again :(
Scionic 01-06-2004, 07:18 PM Will you personally install every intake you sell so we don't over tighten the MAF sensor :?:
you should stop beating the dead horse and keep beating the urbandrum.
Anyway CF intake would be especially at the price that you state. But we'll see if you can offer it for that much after you produce it.
izzles 01-06-2004, 07:24 PM There is no real issue when it gets hot ....We have ran a few setups with a carbon fiber canister...I know a guy with one on the s2000 and its always cool
JDMxB 01-06-2004, 07:32 PM Well...where do I begin?
Ok, the J's intake design is legendary because of 3 reasons.
1. Penis/tadpole shape.
2. "Carbon Fiber Material"...the real J's intake is full CF, but there are countless imitations out there that copy the style, but use a thin piece of CF sticker over the outside, and somehow call that material Carbon Fiber. Please, is this real deal CF, or just an overlay.
3. Penis/tadpole shape = increased throttle response. That's the benefit of the J's design. If it can be replicated on the Scion's--that I am not too sure of. Do some more testing, etc and let us know what you find out about that. Oh yea, no cheap fake CF stuff please. That's just so tacky bro.
The stock engine isn't exactly "Powerless"...compare that to a VX motor in a stock "JDM EG6"...that started life off as just another USDM EG hatch...70 hp...and you call 108 powerless...i know it's not a B18c5 but c'mon man.
its_ikon 01-06-2004, 07:58 PM there would be interest if it is dyno proven and affordable.
bambbrose 01-06-2004, 10:44 PM I am very interested... If it can do for Scions what J's Racing intake does for Hondas, you will be selling more than you can make... definately keep us updated and let us know whats going on

like i said.. this is full 100% carbon fiber.. no fiberglass anywhere.
the bracket to mount the sensor im woring out designs right now and if i can get them replicated for a good price.. will be constructe4d of 6061 T-6 billet aluminum and available in silver red or blue.
so you have as good time stripping that as you will stripping the plastic that it mounts to stock.
im also designing a rear spoiler for the Xa.
oh yea and a jdm eg6 comes with a 170hp stock
im also working on a turbo project that i dont want to go into detail about until its almost complete.
but if its running before any other companies are doing what im doing(and im sure they are out there), i can guarantee itll be the fastest scion in u.s.
PandaIst 01-07-2004, 02:20 AM ahhh....xA is mentioned...and you say a rear spoiler...is it going to be constructed out of cf..oh yah..what about style and price??....i'm interested!
jdm_eg6 01-07-2004, 03:03 AM style is a duckbill style..
im going to make it clean not all hitech riced out..
to be honest there isnt really a xa wing/spoiler i like out yet so it probably wont be like anything youve seen.. ill try and scan the rough draft and show you if your interested.. and yea its also full cf,

PandaIst 01-07-2004, 04:53 AM I'd love to see the rough draft scan of the wing..is the duckbill style xA wing similar to kenstyle or ducksgarden..cause i forget..or is it something totally different?

here is a couple pics of a honda civic duckbill spoiler. the carbon fiber isn't the greatest on this one but you get the idea... duckbills would only look good on an xA, the xB is just too boxy for a duckbill IMO. Hopefully the xA duckbill he is making similar to this one though.

PandaIst 01-07-2004, 07:37 AM kooo...thanks brady for an example of what the xA wing might or will look like.
Mr_scion 01-07-2004, 09:52 PM keep us posted
Kodokan_4 01-10-2004, 02:04 AM Posting my interest in the J's type intake for the xA.
I would also like a replica OEM rear spoiler made out of CF.

jdm eg6- Just sent you a message.
Al-Truistic 01-10-2004, 04:07 AM Wow, $140-$180.00 sounds like a great deal for fully CF CAI, do you know what it will sound like?

jdm_eg6 01-11-2004, 02:21 AM i will try and have 10 for sale at the rancho santa margarita magnaflow meet.
Skywalker 01-19-2004, 06:31 PM My boy uses the J's racing intake on his civic hatch (built B18C5 motor) and it is pretty damn cool.
