How about getting one of those billet mirrors and mounting it higher up, like just above eye level? You know, the ones that mount high on like 49 Mercs and such, and drop down a tad. And then just make a new blanking plate where the current mirrors sit.

LOL!
I don't know why I found this funny, probably because port-o-walls have been out for over 50 years. I've run a few sets on my old VW's.
Stick with the 1-2" kind. The big 3", while pimp, flap in the breeze.
You can put these on in about 20 minutes if you have a jack, and a good air source.
Jack up the tire you want to install on. I then pull the valve stem cores out of the tires (on the car mind you) to let the air out faster. You could sit there and let it out with a stick or something, but that would be slow. Then push the port o wall in around the rim. Make sure its even, put the valve stem core back in, air up the tire. Viola! Instant white walls.
I have some uber rare Red inserts. Now those are pimpin!

Yes I have put them on radials. There is no reason there should be a difference. They make them in 14", 15" and 16" rim sizes. I got my last few sets off of ebay, I just waited for a good deal. Tonight I can try and find an online vendor, I know there is one somewhere.

Lucas AutoParts, in Long Beach, CA (800.952.4333) has port-o-walls for $29, new. They dont recommend the 3" on our stock 15" radials, due to the minimal bead-sealing surfaces. Buit they do have 1.5s and loads of sizes for other wheel sizes.
Suggested Diamondback Tires for new Wide Whitewall radials in many sizes.

It is powered with a 1600 dual port, but I have a 2.0 liter Type 4 engine waiting to be converted to upright cooling ;)

Check to make sure they gave you 15" ones. They make 14, 15 & 16" versions. Just jack up the car, let ALL of the air out of the tire so that you can 'squish' the sidewall away from the rim. Start from the top, sliding it in between the bead and the rim. Work your way out around the rim. Stand back, make sure they are centered on the rim. Air tire back up. Let down the jack, and tada! You've done one!

$39.99 vs. $656.00 is a HUGE difference. I love coker tires like the next guy, but the inserts vs. the actual whitewall radials are a huge gap in price.

My thoughts exactly! I'll be callin Lucas tomorrow. It may have something to do with them being radial tires. Last time I talked to the guy @ Lucas, I think I heard his eyebrows raising when I told him they were radials.
Thanks to everyone for the help and support. Someday, somehow, my vision for the vintage box will be seen. Even if the pics won't post.

43 bucks for the inserts
27 bucks at the tire shop
and about 8 hours of my weekend
all to find out from Lucas today that our stock tires are far too small to put them on. Yes, I do want to shoot myself for not asking in the first place. He told me that 215s are the sort of sidewalls you want. Then, he told me about the patio paint that one of his customers used and has stayed on for 6months. I dunno. I'm just exhausted with the idea of putting in any more money or effort right now.

Stick, I really like the chrome trim! Will you be doing some around the windshield and rear hatch areas, the side mirrors are nice, too. Did you look at the bigger billet style mirror housings, the kind that look like big flood lights but turned around (does that make sense?) I think those would be cool for more bling and maybe, a bigger viewing surface.
I am still keeping my fingers crossed that your experiments are a success, looking good!

Thanks for the re post, Sid.
The mirrors are 4 inch clamp on peep mirrors. I went with tose because I was hesitant to start drilling on my box. They are fairly useless. But, that's why they make those nice big panoramic rear views that snap on to the stock. Fabbing up the covers for the stock side views was kind of a biaatch. But, everything is on the first try. So far, it's staying dry in there.
As for the chrome question, I'd like to get more around the windshield and rear window but not sure how. The stuff that's on there now is just like a c-channel trim. Just snaps right into place. I'd like to do the side door window sills. But, I don't want to pay $160 plus ship to get them from Sparks. Anyone know where I can get some reliable chrome tape? I'm also looking for some chrome vinyl to put around the rear door handle/ license plate light thingy?
Thanks again for all y'all's help

Oh man, I am sorry. I was gonna order them and I ended up getting a hold of some bB caps and loved em. They will hold me over till I get wheels some day.
Did the discs feel snug when you put them on? Did you hear or feel a wierd bump?
Put all 4 on snug. No wobble. Felt no bump when the one left me.
Price of being beautiful, i suppose.
They still look great on one sideof the box. Getting lots of compliments in NYC and north NJ.
Now to try to get JCWhitney to sell me one more! And find that vinyl paint Lucas told us about.

Haven't been by Lowe's yet to look for the patio furniture repair paint. But, I went to my local true value and looked at some paint. What do y'all think of using the marking paint that they use for marking out parking spots, etc? The can said it was a solvent-based paint. Not sure what that means.
Just found this! http://www.mbzponton.org/valueadded/other/tirepaint.htm

Would need round projector style lens to look right with the woody kit though. otherwise may turn out looking like an old 70's pontiac wagon. so are the port-a-walls a no-go? i've been trying to follow this thread, and i just can't seem to totally keep up with what is working vs. not working. So far I'm seeing the port-a-walls as not working, and the full moons/salt flats/racing discs are working (if put on tight?). I'm looking to do this to my box, but I don't have enough money to make mistakes.
I'm thinking of grabbing that paint (thanks for the link to it) and some full moon hubcaps- anything I should know about the hubcaps before I order (and where should I order, I was looking at jcw)

Update: Moons work just fine, never had a problem, 'cept for a little ticking noise. Portawalls do not work on our stock tires. Hazmat? good point. Does anyone need to know? He emailed back on my durability question. Said it doesn't crack or dry out too much. But, as with any whitewalls, they need to stay away from curbs and such.
Fujiz, JCW is about the best I have found. But, I'd still do some searching. I've seen some pretty cool stuff that is slightly different from JCW out there. If I can remember, I'll pass it along on this thread.

Sid,
Check these out! White walls at a fraction of the price. The only thing is, I read something that said that it's not good to use them on radial tires. Don't know if it's true. But, I'm going to check with my local tire guys this week and see what they say.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7940420611&category=33744&sspagename=WD1V
They should be @ a fraction of the cost , Go to ANY Home Depot`s Lamp Area , And you will see those . They are PLASTIC RINGS that go against the ceiling to give YOUR HOME`s Interior an OLD 40`s Style LOOK . All that was done was the INNER CIRCLE was CUT OUT .
stickler, how much did you order? i'm interested to see how much is needed. i was thinking two quarts, but i may snag a gallon for the next set of tires to be covered as well. my birthday is this friday, and that+the hubcaps may end up being what i get from the parental units.
i think when all is said and done, i'll be rolling on a bsp xb with whitewalls, baby moon hubcaps with trim ring painted glossy black to match car paint. hopefully i'll lower it some too, either rs*r or something cheaper :P
enjoy, and keep us posted!

Well, I've only painted one. The rubber paint is a little difficult to get a feel for. And, though it takes 24-48 hours to cure, spread thin, it can dry up on you pretty fast. Took me an hour to do one tire. Wheel see how it goes tomorrow.

You'll make it on one quart. I went wide. I covered the entire stripe that has the lettering and went all the way to the rim. The second coat is a ton easier. I'll prolly be selling the second quart. But, I want to see how well it adheres and wears b4 I do.
BTW, you'll have to take the tires off. Gravity is a factor with this syruppy stuff. It's like trying to paint with Elmer's glue.

Here's a quick PS of primary colors with the look. Obviously, these colors aren't matched to the scion color bank... but it kinda gives you an idea of what it would look like! Hope you enjoy. Thanks!

I wish y'all had waited til I tested them. I just got all of em back on and touching the ground again. I'm going out to get some dinner (about a mile). I'm anxious. Some parts near the rim did not get full adhesion. This is either because Air got under there, too thick of a base coat, or even because I didn't clean them well enough. Or, maybe the stuff don't stick.
Sid, I got some new smoothies, like yours. I'm havin a hell of a time getting them on. I've only got one on and I can feel a gap of 1/8 inch around the whole thing. And, I had to beat the crap out of it with a mallet just to do that. Do yours fit snuggly to the rim? Any tips on how to get them on a little easier?
Back after dinner.................... :nails:

not much we can do. the design of the smoothie is touching the middle circle of our stockies. that is why it wont fully fit with the stockie lip. I run them for couple of months and I did not loose any, I still have them. only complain is the noise.

whew!(wipe forehead), they cancelled my order. I was hoping they would respond with teqnique or some prep for the paint, but none. just order cancelled.
anyways, good luck to you wedgie,
and so it goes. I suspect the poor adhesion owes to a couple of things:
-the tire compound contains some waxes and possibly, silicones. These are -in the compound- and leach out to some degreee by solvent action.
Not clear here on the reasoning for use of muriatic acid to prep the rubber. Don't see how that would do a darned thing
Solvent such as Xylol might give promise. But do bear in mind: putting any sort of solvent on the sidewalls voids tire warranty- it must! So will white compound of any nature -painted or glued on-. What if, by some long shot chance, the solvent cleaning -needed- to get out the wax from the surface pores.. what -if- it rots something deeper down? While I cannot imagine that happening... well...
You see, too, that the radial tire sidewall flexes an awful lot! And so the rubberized coating must possess "polarity" or chemical affinity to make it -stick- to the sidewall.
Mechanical abrasion will =help= the staying power but -only to minor degree-. You must have a chemical bond! Can't get a chemical bond if
a) the sidewall wax and silicone is at all present
b)the polarity of the epoxy rubber coating is not of the same nature as the tire compound
I would think, that liquid latex emusion paint loaded with titanium dioxide for white pigment might do better. An old-time kind of whitewall paint.
That =no one makes this anymore, even for specialty tires= hints that
a)the liablity problem of possible sidewall blowouts put them all out of the market
-or-
b) radial tires just won't hold a painted on, non-vulcanized whitewall of great width
-or-
c)waxes and such in the modern tire's compostion prevent adhesion
-or-
all three reasons above
You met the challenge like men. Remember Thomas Edison? The greatest empiricist of all time. He was not a theoretical man. He -tried everything-
"Nothing worthwhile ever works right the first time, all by itself, just to please -you-. No, you've got to MAKE the damned thing work".
I think you all know this principle. But no one ever said it better than TA Edison: he failed more times than all of us put together have succeeded.
keep on trying. Another point: Keep the painted coating as thin as you can. This will aid it's staying put better. Thick coatings of any sort are always more liable to fail by flexure than thin.

no go on tonite, i have two inside drying, and 2 still on the car (while it rains).... i drove it around the block a few times, hit 50 at one point, and they're staying on ok. i think 2 coats will be it for me. i also am considering superglueing around the edges of the whitewall to prevent (or at least assist in preventing) them from coming off.

Can anyone tell me if these are a full sized hubcap that covers the whole wheel like the Moon caps, or does it only cover the centers, leaving the lip and some of the face of the steelie exposed?

Wedgee, I like it!
Great job and I also want to say thanks fto Stick for leading the way with all of his trial and error. I hope you aren't too dissapointed, stick. I think the ivory look helps create a more vintage look which isn't bad but, I'm sorry it isn't as bright as you would have liked. Maybe now that you have good adhesion you could bleah them with something to get a more bright white? I wish those moons had better fitment, tho.
Anyway, a cool look and great experiment, congrats!
yeah anyone know if bleaching those would/could cause problems? i'm no chemist, but im interested to try that (i just dont want them peeling from the bleach)

the color is not bad. Bleaching it might mess the adhesion(sp?), but what do I know.
lol! Very embarassing moment for me. I put my moons yesterday, and 1/4 mile after, the rear passenger popped out!!!!

I note that imageshack is still bugged off: the image in this quote of your post is not operable!
you'll love imageshack. FREE, no registration, anonymous--- you get the code and paste glue or uh paint it onto your whitewall posting form, thick or thin.. Imageshack.us sticks, does not peel, crack, curl, yellow or disappear... It always works for whitewall pictures.
sure, it's just a toy tire. But before 1918, when Michelin discovered the value of carbon black to tread life, all tires tended towards white, grey, creme, buff.. all the way through. Pale grey is what we think most tires were. by 1924 the "all white" tire was history. Today some collector car tires are reproduced in blazing arctic white which is really sharp looking even though not super-authentic.
Here's an newly made, currently available all-gray tire from Coker Tire Company
BF Goodrich makes these color-stripe tires (fwiw). The color goes through. The reason why we don't see passenger tire cars in solid colors is that -only carbon black tires give adequate service life and tenacity. The carbon black adds abrasion resistance, toughness, UV protection, etc without sacrificing grrrrip.
See what these guys are doing for whites? IF there comes a demand for wide whites then some maker will make them for you but you gotta pave the way and raise a demand. WRITE to some particular tire maker and tell them. Over and again tell them! WHITE or whatever color molded-in color wall could be yours.. for a price
gotta make that market demand. the makers produce only make for thousands of customers; not for Skeezixes like us

At first I was going to do the small center cap to cover the lugnuts... but after looking at it for a while, this way just feels right. If my paint gets any more beat up, i'm thinking about primering the whole deal... If I could find someone to do a 3" chop top on it for like $800 or so, I'd be down. Thanks for the pics. I emailed the guy at that Pure-Style site. He responded that the above wheels are made by Rays called: CalChoppy Garcia. Since they are made by Rays = $$$. It's a dual look wheel. You can take the disc off and you get a typical 5-spoke rim. Put the disc on and you get the above look.
Is there any reason.. why not put the valve stem on the inside of the wheel???
