Default new shocks and struts vs coilovers

i already have trd springs installed. i just figured up the costs of getting new struts and shocks and its gonna be somewhere around 800 dollars or whatever for good ones or i could just go and buy the tein basic coilovers for 850 bucks. what should i do? how long do coilovers last? i have no clue.

I can't speak for the coilovers, but I have the TRD struts and shocks along with the TRD springs and bars. Great combination, the ride is great. It feels about a zillion times better than the stock ride.

The tein basic is a good place to start. how long it will last will is a very general question.
It might last for years or it might last a week. who knows how long it might last. as long as you have warranty on the coilover, it should be covered if the damper starts to leak.

also, this should be in the suspension section.

i was running the stock struts with the trd springs for well over a year with no problems.

Before trading in the tC, i swapped the oem struts and trd spring that was on my car with my cousins stock suspension. he has been riding on them for over a 1.5 years. so in all, the trd spring with the stock struts is still going strong after 2.5 years.

two and a half years!? damn i hope mine makes it that long. thats more than enough time to save up for struts and shocks OR coilovers if i decide to go that route

yeah, the oem struts should last quite awhile. i drive roughly 26K miles a year. my cousin, about 31K miles a year. so you should have more than enough time to save. haha

Daily Driver = springs with shocks...any brand, doesn't really matter

racing/show = coilovers

coilovers do not offer a comfy ride unless you get the SS-P's with EDFC and can adjust it with the push of a button, and even then, they're less comfortable than aftermarket springs/shocks combo

i had stock struts on my TRD srpings with no issues for over a year and a half.
I switched to hotchkis and got in a wreck and blew my shocks...got Konis.
I LOVE them, but after how much I spent, I wish I just went with coilovers to begin with.

If you like the ride on TRDs (almost like stock) then just get shocks. coils will be stiffer, but compared to what I have, coils would be fine.

Springs and shocks are a great combo. But, with coilovers you can adjust the ride height AND dampening levels. You cannot do this with springs and shocks.

I agree with you that its a tough call. A nice set of shocks will cost you ~600. Like you said earlier an entry level set of coilovers are ~850.

In my opinion, you should save up another couple hundred bucks and get into a coilover. The adjust ability is worth it

Most of the big name manufacturers ship stand behind they products with a 1yr warranty. So they will at least last 1 year

the $850 tein basics are hight adjustable only...they DO NOT have adjustable dampening. Those are closer to $1050

I have that setup on my car... the SS-P's w/ edfc and I LOVE IT. It honestly rocks. I daily drive my car everywhere and everyday. I leave the coilovers on about the medium stiffness and I dont mind the ride at all. Very do able.

But I do have to say that here in arizona coil overs are very do able. I was back in CA for a month for xmas break and I would NOT have bought the coilovers if i still lived in CA. Cuz the freeways there SUCK comapred to AZ.
