Default tc transmission woes *updated

So recently my manual 05 tc has been grinding when I shift into third gear. Anyone else have this problem? Its a heart breaking grind that happens even when the clutch is fully pressed in... I brought it to the dealership today and they told me that there is a problem with the syncronizers and that they will be replacing the entire transmission... luckily, I'm covered under toyota's 5year, 60,000 mile warranty. However, the bad news is that they told me if the clutch is worn in any way.. Toyota is going to force me to buy a clutch/flywheel through Toyota in order to maintain the warranty. The dealer quoted me 1200 bucks! Has anyone else had this problem?

Btw: 2005 Scion tC 49,000 miles.. I've had it for a little less than 3 years now.

updated: picked up my car back again from the dealership today with a brand new tranmission for free under warranty. They said the clutch was fine, so thank god. I've noticed that the e-brake feels different though. Has anyone ever driven a 05' and a 08'? it doesnt feel like it comes up as high anymore.

at any rate.. the dealer said that when they drained the transmission fluid that there were pieces of metal in it.

thats not right...i would argue til my face was blue...if somethings wrong they should fix just that part, just because they want to change the whole transmission shouldnt fall on you...tell them that they should just change the synchos...(of course its easier for them to replace the whole thing and thats what i would want them to do, but not for a 1200$ fee)......hmm that sucks..

goodluck

Call Scion about that. That seems real shady if you ask me. I think the dealer is just trying to make money off of you since they are only getting paid the warranty labor etc and they figure its a believable story they could bull____ you into paying for. Again I would call Scion about it before paying for anything.

This is exactly what there trying to do. I work for ppl who do the same thing. Cough Cough Monro. If it is under a warranty they only make labor off of the work, and that isn't where there money comes from. If worse comes to worse tell them you don't want to buy the clutch and they'll make you sign a waiver or something, or just go somewhere else. I think all Toyota dealerships will back a toyota factory warranty

Wow that's ridic. I'd take it to another dealer.

Who knows what they'll do to your car if you decline the clutch and have them work on the syncros anyways.

mine grinds going into reverse if the car is even creeping backwards. the clutch is all the way in, but i have to stop the car fully and then put it into gear... correct me if i am wrong, but i should be able to shift into any gear with the clutch all the way in regardless of whether the car is moving or not. right? I was hoping it was a tranny-fluid level thing, but it sounds like its the internals.

Reverse grind is pretty common with any car. First of all most reverse gears are straight cut instead of helical, thats the awesome winding noise you hear if you drive more than 3 ft in it. Stopping before putting the car in reverse is usually a good thing anyway. Try putting the clutch in again before going into reverse after coming out of gear.

BACK ON TOPIC: I'd try another dealer because I strongly believe they are trying to get your money. Or call Scion / Toyota and see what they say. I wouldn't give them a dime after being lied to like that.

yes! finally some1 else tranny does the same thing. My does that awful grinding too and when i broke my axle they told me that my trans was messed up as well and it was those damn snychros. My warranty is gone so they were gonna charge me 4200 for axle and brand new trans. Screw that. I just had the axle replaced and ill deal with the trans untill i want to buy a new one and install it myself.

was 3rd gear grinding every time? i ask because sometimes when i shift at high rpms it won't go into 3rd, and of course it grinds. i have to clutch in neutral and back out before i can get it into gear. i may need to talk to them about this before my warranty expires.

well u lucked out w/ a free tranny. the metal pieces in the tranny fluid is always normal, unless u had chunks then that would be a problem

It would be grinding every time. I could be waiting at the light and if I shift into third, it would grind. It was horrible.

I have the same problem. In the morning when its cold it grinds going in 2nd and 3rd also at high rpms its hard to go into 3rd. I have a short shifter so they might say its because of that.

yea my tranny grinds when I shift quickly into 3rd when the motor is semi cold I have redline mt90 in there nd I think since its more of a race fluid it has to warm up or else it doesn't react right...so ur saying I could get my tranny changed? hmm interesting as for the clutch thing you aren't asking to touch the clutch you just brought it in for the tranny so tell them to replace the tranny nd that's it if the clutch happens to wear out later on down the road then you take care of it
