Default gas light question?

Im just wondering if anyone knows what triggers the gas light to go on, because i got a custom gauge face, and sometimes worry i might have put the needle on wrong. Is there something in the tank that actually knows how much gas you have left and tells the light to go on, or is it the position of the dial that tells it to go on? Thanks guys

The gas light is all a part of the sending unit in the tank. the only way you can mess it up is if you unplug a wire.

That light will actually help you out in seeing if you put the face on right, based on where the needle is when the light comes on you can see if you are too high or too low with the needle

Actually the low fuel light is a circuit in the sending unit. As resistance changes causing the needle to fall towards empty, it reaches a certain resistances and it triggers the low fuel light to come on.

The good news is, is doesn't matter how your needle was reinstalled, it comes on at the same low fuel point, each time.

I have three gauge faces, and all three needles are at a different area when the light comes on. But they always take close to the same gallons when we refuel.

I went 56 miles on the light, but I won't ever do that again. Still had half a gallon

What I do each time the light comes on I reset trip B to keep an eye on it.

HMM, That leads me to wonder, does anyone know if Toyota did any tests to see how far the XB can go from the point the light goes on t'il the gas runs dry?

Why would you? Toyota put that idiot light there for a reason. Why would you want to run the tank dry only to have to try and prime it back up again? Not to mention all the crap your sucking into your engine that sits in the bottom of your fuel tank.

D00D! Fill your gas tank when it's around 1/3 to 1/2 and you'll never have to worry about it! This is ESPECIALLY true in the winter (now) for those who live in cold places (you) . . . . You DON'T want to run out of gas when it's below zero degrees F. I know this from experience!! (You also don't want water vapor condensing in your gas tank; if the tank is never allowed to go past 1/3 full, that's unlikely to happen.)

i'm doin MPG/total mileage testing here, so filling it when it's at half isn't what I'm lookin to do.
and my original question still stands.

Apparently we dont have the answer, he does. Hes just a troll who wants to BE all knowing. LOL

BTW troll .... fuel tank is somewhere in the neighborhood of 11.2 gallons. How ever much you use and the mileage you clock until you refill will give you your MPG. But you knew that already.

Wow, what great insight you have. You gonna tell me the sky is blue next? You should be solving crimes with such knowledge, why waste your superior skills here?
You always this charming or is it just because you're on your period?

p911gt10c,

You seem to be very aggresive in your posting. Hopefully a moderator will reel your reins back in. This forum is for friendly exchanges of information, not personal attacks.

You seem to not have read the thread correctly. I simply asked if anyone had certain information, those who chose to respond decided to be less than civil and I simply won't tolerate it.
In the future, do be more thorough in your accusations.

Completely my mistake and I do apologize. For the record, WA is a fantastic state and I've met some fantastic Scion owners there.
