View Full Version : Best / Cleanest H.I.D. Install (IMO)
krazyqban352 01-18-2008, 01:53 AM Hey everyone, this is the first time Ive done an H.I.D. install and it came out pretty dang good. Ive seen other tcs at car shows and meets and the balast is just zip tied or hanging around somewhere in the engine compartment visible. Unfortunately I am a perfectionist lol so that wouldnt work for me. I installed mine in a way that the ballast would not be seen, may also help if you ever get pulled over for them. BTW I got mine from Mobile HID, this install makes *this* kit seem like a factory part.
I started off by bending the mounts the kit came with into a right angle (L shape). I then found a place where I can use prexisting screws instead of zipties or making a new hole. Run the connections from the kit through the hole next to the headlight housings.

Once you have installed the ballast top it off with a Doctor Isotope Radiator Cooling Plate and no one will know you have H.I.D.s installed.

Here is a shot of the grill and the little bit you can see of the ballast, if it bothers you it can easily be painted black.

So what do you all think??[/img]
CRUZtc8 01-18-2008, 01:55 AM looks clean.
2_much_tc 01-18-2008, 01:55 AM very nice... you should do your fogs too...
JOEinSD 01-18-2008, 01:58 AM hmmm..might have to redo mine and buy a diversion panel. =]
TeeCizzle 01-18-2008, 01:59 AM what happenns if you Rear End someone?....The ballasts will be Toast!....But good idea I guess!
Yanki01 01-18-2008, 02:02 AM hope you dont get water through those grills.
krazyqban352 01-18-2008, 02:03 AM wow I have never got that many replies that fast, thanks for the commentsv
BZinn1 01-18-2008, 02:03 AM That is where I put my kit as well a while back..........fit like it was meant to go there..........I angled mine a bit to the sides to match the curve of the opening and then you cannot see them through the grill aswell.........
O5_TRD_tC 01-18-2008, 02:04 AM so u can see the ballast through the grill?
krazyqban352 01-18-2008, 02:05 AM hope you dont get water through those grills.
its all good, they are water proof, plus the connections are towards the bottom so that water wont sit on top of them.
BZinn1 01-18-2008, 02:06 AM Only if you get down and look right through the grille close up........they hide very well. If he can run them in a bucket of water for a weekend I feel pretty safe......LOL
a_german_named_hans 01-18-2008, 02:09 AM That's a pretty dope spot. Especially with that diversion panel there. Good idea.
krazyqban352 01-18-2008, 02:13 AM so u can see the ballast through the grill?
I have the vrd grills so you can see a little bit of the corners of both, with the 08 grills you will see nothing. If it does bother you that much paint the ballast black.
About the water issure, it has been raining non stop over here for the past 2 days and I have been driving through it and parking in it and have not had any problems.

07blackedouttc 01-18-2008, 02:20 AM good install but i still dont know if i would trust them there with rain, ive seen the test, but yeah
ExpresScion 01-18-2008, 02:21 AM Looks good. I mounted mine behind the bumper, so they are nowhere to be found. I thought about mounting them behind the grill, but I didn't want them to be seen.
Jdawg82 01-18-2008, 02:45 AM Id be concerned about someone stealing your ballasts. All they have to do is hit the grill out and then rip the ballasts off the bumper. Probaly would take all of 30 seconds.
krazyqban352 01-18-2008, 02:52 AM I would be ticked if someone did that. I will probably eventually paint them black so you wont be able to see any of them.
Any one want my08 Grills?
I dont need them anymore.
riboflavin 01-18-2008, 03:00 AM very clean!
aRucard 01-18-2008, 03:10 AM that's very clean, mine are hangin somewhere in the enginebay
BlizZard 01-18-2008, 03:47 AM very clean!
x2
rolloutrs1 01-18-2008, 03:51 AM nice and clean man!
Dakine 01-18-2008, 06:13 AM very nice! u get a high five!
greddy05tc 01-18-2008, 06:29 AM not bad. but if you really wanted to hide them you should do like i did. i took my bumper off and mounted the ballasts to the outside of the front frame rails that hold the radiator support. so the only way you can see them is if you actually lean into the engine compartment and look down past the headlights. you can still only see a corner of them. plus water doesn't get to them. just something for everyone to think about.
davedavetC 01-18-2008, 02:35 PM i have mine there too, unfortunately i put my relays there and now i fried one of mine, but im getting a new one, and im gonna reposition them all to another spot.
tc1stgen 01-18-2008, 02:42 PM I mounted my ballasts underneath my HL housing! No way that you look at it can you see them!
ppiech2 01-18-2008, 03:19 PM nice and clean. I like it.
i did mine the SAME exact way.. but be careful when you wash the car and don't aim at the ballast.. i was told that they were waterproof but when it got wet.. it caused my headlights to "stutter" on and off.
tc1stgen 01-19-2008, 06:03 PM Which I why I did not mount mine there!
andino 01-19-2008, 07:54 PM mine are mounted below the headlights on on the bumper support. you can't even see the ballasts :P i'll see if i can dig up some pics

thats how mine are on my car. very clean and invisible without searching for them.
SciontCya 01-21-2008, 02:39 AM what happenns if you Rear End someone?....The ballasts will be Toast!....But good idea I guess!
Yeah, you total your tC and $150 UPGRADE is your biggest problem?
I think not...
krazyqban352 01-21-2008, 03:59 AM exactly, my HIDs would be the least of my worries.
Dakine 01-21-2008, 04:19 AM shoot mine would be my retros if i were to worry.
chicotunner07 01-21-2008, 04:59 PM ^^yea me too^^
i hadnt thought about that.......one front end collision and there goes my $500+ lightz!!
nice mount
CatalepsicFox 01-21-2008, 05:09 PM nice but is there any risk of getting the ballast wet?
krazyqban352 01-21-2008, 07:20 PM nice but is there any risk of getting the ballast wet?
Like I said, its been raining here alot lately and I have had no problems. I just washed the tc yesturday and it still has not shown problems. With this kit I think you will be ok.
B_Izzle 01-22-2008, 07:29 AM placing the ballasts there makes it hard to get access to the parking light bulbs and turn signals, doesnt it? (not that one really needs to access it all the time, but still....)

No they are still easy to get to lol.
Just an update I have still had no problems with the HIDs being installed there. It has been raining nonstop over here the past couple days because of all the tornado warnings and what not and they still work awsome.
SeanJohn 02-14-2008, 05:33 AM how is the glare.
krazyqban352 02-14-2008, 11:18 PM how is the glare.
The glare on what?
1_kLEan_tC 02-25-2008, 12:14 AM Thanks for the idea....i justed this install for my VRD HID's
striker_1818 02-25-2008, 12:29 AM so the ballast brackers are just bolted onto a frame and hanging in there. If so, I bet you hear knocking noises when going at speeds of 50 and above. furthermore, the vibration of the car will split the bracket into two and damage the ballast. Also, the ignitor plugs run a risk of getting shorted out because water will get through the grille. It doesn't happen right away but it builds up over a period of time. That's why you should always avoid environment exposure.
And in my honest opinion, the way you installed your ballasts are the worst by far. Brackets can easily bend and they are exposed to water constantly.
1_kLEan_tC 02-25-2008, 01:02 AM Water won't short out the ballast since mobile HIDs kits are 100% waterproof. Well, I dont first guy who did this install double side taped the ballast to the bracket and wrenched tight en the bracket close...that what i did...
1_kLEan_tC 02-25-2008, 01:04 AM Also, if you close there isnt much of the ballast that is exposed to the environment...another going 50mph water just runs of the car...
CSUnited14 02-25-2008, 01:05 AM Just Use high strength Velcro and stick them to the frame... i have one on the side of my battery and one on the frame by the light... no water to them and it just looks like a metal thing lol.. no one looks at my engine bay anyways...

That what I did for my low beams...I just put them under headlights...

The electronics may be waterproof but there's still a metal connector that hooks up to the power socket where moisture will build-up.
Guess you're still buying the advertisement where people will make their ballasts be undestructable. Gimmicks to sell a cheap knock-off for more.
Anyways, ballasts develop bad signs when in contact with water but not instantly but it's rather a process.

Again, damage is not instantly as i previously said but it builds up over a period of time.
You should watch this video too. Crappy ballast being tested and failing after a few months
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suSEzHn0S9I
It's all about gimmicks to sell a product.
krazyqban352 02-25-2008, 10:25 PM My kit still works perfectly fine having it installed there, its kinda funny because it has been there for months, the same amount of time you said it would take for them to be damaged. Where they are installed only a bit of the corner is exposed, so it is practically the same as having it somewhere in the engine compartment.
striker_1818 02-28-2008, 07:46 AM I only said a few. I'm pretty sure when it rains heavily and you have cars driving in front of you, chunks of water will land on your vehicle(also known as heavy fine raindrops) rapidly that you can barely see. Well, that is what is hitting your ballasts as they are pretty much exposed.
cliffud 04-02-2008, 10:43 AM It's all about gimmicks to sell a product.
Striker, the ballast in a bucket demo isn't a gimmick to sell product, it's a demonstration that these ballasts are solid, waterproof, and won't fail under stress.
I'm sure some other ballasts may be able to pull off the demo where the ballast is dunked for a few minutes but that's why I don't just demo the waterproof test for a few minutes. I have no problems demonstrating it for hours at a time.
At HIN in Arizona last year this MobileHID ballast was submerged for 8+ hours while being left on.
http://mobilehid.com/hin3.jpg
http://mobilehid.com/hin.jpg
http://mobilehid.com/hin2.jpg
Not only that but when a ballast can take that and then the hammer test for durability http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFlZZukZx6Y
Then it's a no brainer that this product is a solid product.
BZinn1 04-02-2008, 02:44 PM Mine is stillgoing strong after 6 months mounted in same spot........yes it does get wet there, but I took them out last montha dn they are just as clean as when I put them in........no corrosion......feel pretty confident in the product.
Dilirious 04-02-2008, 04:00 PM when you guys bought this did you purchase both the high and low beams?
krazyqban352 04-02-2008, 10:48 PM when you guys bought this did you purchase both the high and low beams?

jsingh 04-13-2008, 10:24 PM Hey people wat r the chances of getting pulled over by cop for having 6000k temperature lights???
thanks
ADRdesignCo 04-13-2008, 10:27 PM depends where you are. i just get attention and dirty looks, but thats after aiming them down quite a bit and i dont do stupid things thatll get me in trouble.

haha thats because you live in worcester! One of the places you have to worry about someone doing that.
NOT_JDM 07-20-2008, 11:34 AM wow it would be funny if the brackets brake and then the ballast drops underneathe the car
waterboy72785 07-20-2008, 04:31 PM wow it would be funny if the brackets brake and then the ballast drops underneathe the car
hahaha that would be funny. i doubt it'll happened tho but man thats clean!!! i just double taped mine cuz mine didnt come with any brackets
krazyqban352 07-20-2008, 09:39 PM ya that will never happen because they are bolted on.
