View Full Version : tC sway bar installed on an xB!!!

11-10-2004, 02:02 AM
So I was once again bored at the scion central and decided to take it appon myself to install a tC stock swaybar onto my xB. With the help of scionjohn and the blessing of tChillen for his old swaybar. I went to work, scion john helped me do the drilling and alignment, with evilsciondude supervising. After wards I had the sway bar bolted down on the rear arm bar and than fabricated some connectors to the rear shocks, just like the white line rear sway bar set-up. The aftermath, no roll what soever, my xB is ready for the track and around corners is incredible. The tC rear stock sway bar is so much thicker than the hotchkis I was blown away at the difference.

The tC swaybar and the hotchkis rear sway bar. You can see the difference.

So if you got a buddy with a tC, and they installed the trd. Ask them for their old tC swaybar and have a shop install yours today!! :D

Hmm, I'm not so sure about the link that's fab'd on there. And the way the bar kinks downward looks like there may be some clearance issues...........................sorry Gabe, not for me.

How hard would it be to extend the bar up to the mount point with the same size round stock or use a strong enough tubing to sleeve over the bar and flattened on one end for the bolt? The flat stock bothers me for some reason. It's just me though.

I think it is a creative idea.

Gabe, I would seriously, seriously, seriously, rethink this "link" you have connecting the swar bar to the shock mount.

http://www.precisionmuffler.com/32cd15d0.jpg

Either, try and shape the bar to mount to the shock mount, or find a Hiem joint that would work. Or a piece of angle iron or something. That flat piece appears to have no structural rigidty, and under repeated heavy loading, will fail, and who knows what damage will occur.

Also, some nylock nuts here wouldn't be a bad idea.

squrrel, it does look a little if'y, but I worked it out with Gabe. We had to go down with the bar because of clearence and we still have plenty of ground clearence. As for the connecting link. Its pretty sturdy. Gabed used a 1/4 in. piece of steel to fab that. I think it will hold pertty well.

11-10-2004, 04:05 PM
have had it on for a week already and I drive hard. Not one problem. The links are working great. I tried to raise the swaybar up just a little bit but than it was hitting the spring holder. The swaybar also doesn't pass the inner wheel so i am not worried, I have already driven over some speed bumps at an angle to see if there are any problems; end result a perfect performing swaybar. :) The endlinks I made have to be heated with a torch to bend them, so I am not worried about them failing.
Also, some nylock nuts here wouldn't be a bad idea.
The bolts are under pressure and I rechecked them yesterday to see if they are coming loose from last week, not one loose nut. :) Although that is not a bad idea. :)

Gabe, think Heim joints, Heim joint, Heinm joints.

Gabe has come up with some good ideas. And we do kid him sometimes. But he's just an enthusiast at heart like the rest of us.

Heim joint? dam spell check can't figure that out either! You mean swivel eye bolts? Its in the works, :) Thanks brad.

11-12-2004, 05:05 PM
good idea,
but without the knownledge of how suspension
works and what not, how can u be certain that the
thickness of the bar isn't too much over kill?
and at the angle its at, does it taunt correctly?

those low clearance issues look super dangerous, if i had you car
and was going over a speed bump, i wouldn't be surprised if your saw
your shocks ripped out of the car in your rear view mirror.

i hope u can fix it asap, good luck and it was a good try..

11-12-2004, 07:47 PM
since the low part is still higher than the rim bottom , I am not worried at all. And the whiteline bar is about the same thickness if not more. So I am not worried about over kill. Besides I am more worried about scraping my JIC type 2 over scraping anything else.

stylis.. awesome awesome write up. i just got my hands on a tc rear sway n i did the same thing you did. although i did decide to keep my hotchkis rear sway.

with both the bars i'd say that it handles 40000x better. ive taken turns 2x faster than i could before because of the body roll it had.

A+ for you :!:

hotbox05
11-19-2004, 10:51 AM
hmm both on there huh? any pics of that?now all u need is the actual replacement rear sway. then bam all three.

11-19-2004, 04:00 PM
I recomend having only one on there because the thicker one will do all the work and the other wil just be there. Monkeymaker and I had a long discussion about it and he was right. The domanent swaybar is doing all the work, and the other is for looks :D

But god job NJthunder5spd!! :) Props to you, hope to see pics soon.

i paid for that damn hotchkis rear sway so even if its just for looks its staying there LOL

11-19-2004, 04:28 PM
Sell it, I already have takers on mine! :D People here in the norcal are already PMing me for it. Sell it!

11-19-2004, 04:29 PM
Ok, ok, ok, for a rear SWAY bar to work PROPERLY, it MUST BE attached to the rear bar/axle, AS WELL as the frame of the car.

The set-ups that are currently on the market that I know, regardless of whether its Hotchkis, Toyota, Progress, Whiteline, or whatever, are just to keep the rear beam from flexing.

Yes, it will reduce some body roll, but if you really want to reduce even more body roll, have someone design a bar that will attach to both the axle and the frame of the car.

11-19-2004, 04:31 PM
That will work, but I am not about to make a skeleton bar like someone in Socal has. Thats for the hardcore suspension peeps, I am just a poor old muffler guy with a lot of time on his hands.

squirrel
11-19-2004, 04:33 PM
How do you know that bar isn't up in Nor*Cal also? It just might not be installed right now, or is it?

11-19-2004, 05:00 PM
no its not, Because no one said they have it installed. :D And besides I don't want the rear to be too stiff, or else oversteer would kill me. :D

Ok, we'll see. Maybe some peeps don't want to advertise all of their mods.

Remember, when its comes to cornering, you want the rear end as stiff as you can get it on our FWD cars. Remember the pics of VW Rabbits picking up the inner rear tire on corners, that's what you want.

Oversteer can also be driver induced, whether its a poor line going into the corner, accelerating or braking at the wrong times, or even tires. With proper driver control, oversteer and understeer can be controlled if the driver has the skills to recognize the problem, and "drive" thru it.

11-19-2004, 05:22 PM
I still like my tC swaybar, feels great. :D

i want oversteer. or at least neutral versus stock understeer.

11-19-2004, 05:45 PM
you want to drift it, don't you hotbox05!!

hotbox05
11-19-2004, 05:49 PM
hells yeah. lol i miss drifting. all my old cars were rwd so they could all drift to some extent. 8) but yeah. even my old school technology 81 bimmer had a frame to rear suspension arm sway bar. now i know what i gotta fabricate. yeah right i wish.

11-19-2004, 06:13 PM
so you want to be the first fliped over xB? I can understand that....ummm maybe not. :D

squirrel

so you want to be the first fliped over xB? I can understand that....ummm maybe not. :D

I almost rolled Roger Foo's CVCC when we first started auto-xing back in 1984. That's how tight we got the suspension set-up. I had it on two wheels a couple times that weekend.

In order to roll the xB you'd have to be going pretty fast on a really tight corner to flip it. But then again, you can also flip it by over-driving your own limits/skills, by not having the skills, or the proper set-up.

11-20-2004, 01:03 AM
steelies on a tight set-up and trying to drift on the onramp to the freeway will do it.

11-20-2004, 05:27 AM
i dont really wanna all out drift with it. but i do want to eliminate understeer. it is one of my sworn enemies

If you could build your own sway bar, than please post up your webaddress because I would gladly buy from you. I found that I could not bend this bar even if I wanted too, I tried to bend the thing on my own bender and nothing. So if you cna make your own, please show me how. :D

i plan on a larger bar in the near future. all you'll need is a solid bar of spring steel somewhat larger than the hotchkis one, and properly heated/bent to match the hotchkis shape. then some barstock for the ends..

couple hour project!
