View Full Version : How many of you have a crack/ship in the windshield?
dchan8 01-08-2004, 05:17 AM Today really ____ed me off, I was driving home on 101N and this small truck cut me off, so I switch lanes. As I was switching lanes, the truck spit up a rock and it cracked my window. This totally sucks, everyday I get a new rock chip, but today I got a crack in my windshield. I'm just curious as to how many of you also have a noticible crack/chip in the windshield. Seems to me that the xB gets windshield cracks easily.
BTW- anyone know a good place to repair or replace the windshield in the Bay Area?
thanks,
dchan8
bBted 01-08-2004, 05:42 AM sorry to hear that dave...
my friend got his windshield replaced the first month he got the xb...ill ask him about the shop...
yeah i had to replace my first windshield within two months. it sucks and its expensive.(500-800) at least until there is an aftermarket for xb glass. i purchased a sport bra ( yeah i know) for long trips only i put it on and it does make a difference. If i had it on my first cracks(the ones that spread quickly and made the windshield replacement necessary) would not have happened. Its just that the leading edge is sooo blunt it pushes all the air straight onto the glass, so at 70mph+ those small items have nowhere else to go. with the sport bra the air gets pushed up. not alot but enough to prevent alot of things from hitting. This IS very evident with bugs as they only hit towards the top of the windshield (if at all) . I take the bra off in town and wax before i put it on and after i take it off. Its not the best solution but for 45 bucks (carson scion) id recommend it for the long hauls.
2002cbr600f4i 01-12-2004, 09:08 PM Yup... 2 weeks after getting my xA I got dinged by a rock from a dumptruck. Left a nice crack in the windshield. $545 to replace it... Grrr...
Actually, I've heard that with a lot of these cab-forward type designs that have the more vertically sloped windshields it's pretty common. Rocks are more likely to hit perpendicular to the windshield than at an oblique angle which causes the windshield to take the full force instead of a glancing blow...
Dammit... :-(

ScionVan 01-14-2004, 12:01 AM THE day after I got my current daily driver, I got a rock chip from some big rig going 101N also. It's been about 3.5 years now, and the chip is still the same size; just about 3/16" in diamater. If it's just a chip, sometimes you can get away with leaving it alone...!

Totally feel you on that one Van. The day after I got my xB about 52 miles on the odometer I heard this huge crack sound bounce off my window. Next thing I know I had this crack that caught light better then the best diamond could. That thing taunt the sh!@t out of me. I had it fixed the next day....now it looks like a permanent bug squash.
And then about 8K miles I got a-friggin-nother one the looks as if the largest bumble bee you can imagine took a nose dive through my window but only got through the first layer and smashed the second.
Docsnuff 01-14-2004, 02:31 AM I got a chip on my front winshield of my mustang like 3 years ago, and it hasnt changed at all. Hot and cold, it has remained the same, I am pretty impressed!

toybox1 02-06-2004, 09:52 AM just had the windshield replaced ... $420 All Star Auto Glass ... only place w/ aftermarket glass
JDMxB 02-06-2004, 01:38 PM I know HAHAjoey has a small chip on the left side from a rock.
Phaze23LBC 02-06-2004, 02:05 PM Yep, I got one smack dead center on my windshield. I wanna get it fixed asap but i thought there was some sort of product you could buy and fix it yourself. Does anybody know about this product and how much it costs? Does it really work to fix cracks in the windshield? PM me if you have any info. Thanks!
Al-Truistic 02-06-2004, 02:17 PM I got a spider chip in my third month...sucks! I called a windshield repair person and he stoopped the chip from spreading. I got it fixed early enough so that it didn't start to grow, it's still there though and when a certain angle of light catches it I can see it in alll it's glory. Otherwise, I don't notice it much anymore. I didn't want to have to get a new windshield yet, too many other things to lay cash money down on...
The repair was only $50.00 and was done at in front of my house. Joe (the repair guy) says he had done two other xB's that same week and kind of thought that the angle of the windshield might have something to do with it. I kind of think it has more to do with how fast you are driving at any one time, probably little to no damage would occure if contact was made at lower speed but, I guess it could happen regardless.
Sucks hairy balls anyway you look at it...

Yes, it does suck hairy balls :lol
But yeah, I think speed might have to do with it. All THREE of my chips came while I was driving 80mph or higher.
Has anyone seen trucks with a clear shield thing just above the grill? What are those for? I wonder if they would help on an xB for long freeway trips? :

booooooo! What a pain!
Giovanni 02-11-2004, 04:07 AM Whats up fellas,
My xB is coming in at the end of the month and thanks to this thread, the first thing I am going to do is get some 3M film for the windshield. I had the same stuff put on my house and it is supposed to be resistant to hurricane winds with debris. It is totally clear and shouldn't cost more than $100.00.
I'll update with the price when i have it installed. Just thought it was an idea you may want to look into.

Jay82 02-11-2004, 05:57 AM I havent gotten mine yet but since this has happened to so many people its starting to worry me.
Red_Genie_xB 02-11-2004, 07:16 AM No one report to insurance??
I you have AllState, most of the time if you just repair not replace; they will reimburse you for the repair.
I have a $100 deductible on my insurance and I was driving my benzo and cracked the windshield... I paid $100 for brand new windshield from Mercedes Benz dealer.
BTW, it is consider a comprehensive...just lower your comprehensive deductible from like $500 to $100. It covers vandalize and windshield crack, stuff like that for like $5~10 more per month
Is worth is because time to time rock fly off truck damage your car, and this is cover under comprehensive and it will not affect your rate
showpaojoe 02-11-2004, 07:57 PM Damn, i gotta take a picture of Steve's crack. It's gotta be like 9 inches tall
Rhobz 02-11-2004, 08:20 PM I have a crack in my windshield and a matching one in my left headlight lens. That really sucks.
RegGenie...I hear ya, but for me to lower my deductible from $500 - $250 would be $30 permonth. Scared to see what it would be to go dwon to $100.
TheScionicMan 02-27-2004, 04:30 AM First blemish on my xB was a nice cracking rock chip. It's still less than an inch. I bought a DIY kit to try and repair it, waiting for a sunny day. Eventually I'll just get it replaced but I don't wanna pay the $100 deductible more than I have to.
I saw a Camo xB in the gallery with a full bra and PMed the owner but never got a response and now I can't find the pic...

Just curious.....how many car lengths ahead of you do you allow at 70 mph?
Sean
k4kas 03-21-2004, 07:19 PM I know most of you are in Cali.
But here in Florida if you get a chip or crack in the front glass
the state of Florida will pay for it.Just let your insurance company know
and they will work it out with the state.
This is only true if you have full coverage.
It has saved me many times on past cars.
rjsalvi 03-21-2004, 07:30 PM Just wondering, but does anyone with either a mesh or billet grille -- one that allows air flow to the engine -- have any cracks in their windshield...?
ikhonlord 03-26-2004, 03:44 AM I got 2 beautiful cracks on my windshield but im gettin them fixed 2morrow. I called my insurance(Geico) full coverage gives u full glass coverage and don't have to pay the deductible. If after they fix it it starts to crack again, just have to call them get them the original claim number and they will replace my whole windshield.....I'm glad... :D
Skeletonjack 03-26-2004, 04:03 AM I have a small crack in my windshield as well. I also have one near the window where the paint has chipped off and the metal is showing through. It is getting a bit rusted. Anyone know if the Toyota dealership sells special touch-up paint for Scions?
SJ
jjambox 03-26-2004, 04:37 AM i got my first chip a month ago or so and the other day, i guess because of the heat build-up in my xb, it spread across. i was so ____ed. then again just yesterday going about 55-65 mph merging onto the freeway, his stupid big rig was dropping gravel and i got another on the passenger side. i wasn't mad cause i had to replace it anyway, but my wife was ____ed at the truck. we need to complain to scion/toyota about this. maybe they'll issue a new windshield and one of 3m clear vinyl things to protect it since it's so prone to getting cracked :!: GET UP, STAND UP :!:
