View Full Version : at the gas pump... does YOURS click 99/100 times?
hahajoey 01-08-2004, 09:43 AM everytime i get gas.. like u know.. with all cars..
u just click it. set it and let it do it's thing..
but with my xb. i've noticed.. no matter what
gas station i go to, where i go to, what kinda gas
or whatever amount it'll stay clicked(fueling) for a few
secs.. then i gotta manually hold it.. soemtimes
even like 1/2 way because if i pull it all the way
open.. it just clicks like its FULL when i barely put
1-2 galloons in my near empty tank.
i'm getting sick of this. but i just wanted to know
if other people are having this issue.. I TRIED
all the gas stations out there locall..
from those private ones.. to arco, chevron,
shell, 76... EVEN a texaco and a that other one
CITGO or whatever 7-11 always has..
its just annoying..
i've tried to like push the nozzle towards
the right, the left,, aim it more up.. more in/down..
like more OUTWARD.. like even turning the damn nozzle gun
upside down.. it doesn't work.. i always gotta stand there.
thank god our tanks our small..
PLEASE POST AND REPLY to this =)
UrbanDrum 01-08-2004, 10:28 AM I have the same Prob...Eric m. didn't beleive me...Turning the whole nozzle upside down has worked for me though. I just came back from pumping gas at costco and I had no prob and the price is good...I guess I might just keep going there...I wonder if that's cheap quality gas though :?
smilygo 01-08-2004, 03:35 PM My xA does it sometimes. It helps if you remove the cap and wait for 3 minutes or so to release the pressure.
DjFrOsT 01-08-2004, 03:38 PM my box does the same thing...what i do is hold the pump at a certain angle...just so that there is a little crack to let air in and out...cause i guess its the press which is clickin the pump...soo if you let some pressure out...you should be aight...but i just hate holding the damn pump the entire time i'm there...http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4_3_5.gif
EV_AIC-xB 01-08-2004, 03:41 PM i have same problem, particular gas station pumps will do that...
i don't recall which gas station I did not have problems with...
Munch 01-08-2004, 03:43 PM WOW  I hope they fix that problem before mine gets here.
bBted 01-08-2004, 04:24 PM mine does that too...but only once a while
xBguy 01-08-2004, 04:29 PM I have only used union76 (unocal) gas and have never experienced the trouble y'all are describing. The gas nozzle does not have any kind of rubber boot or sleeve that requires a seal to the fill tube, therefore the tank can "breath" and not build up pressure. Does this make any sense?
debris 01-08-2004, 04:39 PM mine does it all the dang time too...its so annoying.....
If you try shoving the top of the pump all the way in it'll sometimes fix it, or it may be too far in so pull it out a little bit and it'll fix it. I had the problem once and I pulled it out a bit and it was taken care of. It has to do with the angle of the inlet to the gas tank. What's happening is the gas is hitting against a lip inside and not draining down fast enough that makes the pump think it's full. Try it out. Worked for me!
PandaIst 01-08-2004, 06:18 PM Damn....i have that same problem :? ...only with certain gas stations. For me it only happens at privately owned independent stations though which i only went for gas cause i was very desperate. I mostly go to chevron, mobil, or arco which i don't have a problem pumping my gas at.
hahajoey 01-08-2004, 06:34 PM i have tried all angles, all positions..
its just tiresome trying so hard just to get
gas.. and i have tried to PULL back that
rubber splash thingy on the pumps that have it..i'll try that
leave a gap for air thing..
but waiting 3 mins to DEpressurize just to get gas
is absurd! thats gonna take forever! hahaha it might
just work. i tried getting gas a few times with the engine on
just to releave the pressure, that worked a LIL.
Milhamscion 01-08-2004, 06:36 PM I have fueled quite a few xa's and xb's and never had a problem. :?: Maybe Im just lucky?
stellarhavoc 01-09-2004, 12:14 AM I've only refueled once thus far.. but yah that happened!! i was like WTF? i filled up from E with only 4 gallons in the no friggin way!! :x
tintsem 01-09-2004, 02:37 AM Damn, I thought it was just me. I'm having the same problem. I was just filling up my truck and my wife was next to me filling up the XB and she could not keep the thing pumping. I told here that she's been driving for this long and still cant figure it out? So I proceeded to do it and it did the same damn thing to me.
1NZFE 01-09-2004, 02:42 AM Any Scion owners OUTSIDE California with this problem?
hahajoey 01-09-2004, 03:28 AM I have fueled quite a few xa's and xb's and never had a problem. :?: Maybe Im just lucky?
haha! lucky bastard.
HotBox 01-09-2004, 04:02 AM dude never had this problem til a few days ago ____ed me off cause i know it wasnt full but i didnt wanna keep on going was a little scared that the gas would come out

Do a search next time, Newbie.
itimebomb 01-10-2004, 03:43 PM its a weird toyota thing. i had a 92 camry once and it did the same thing every once in a blue moon. even the new cars here on the lot do it every once in a while.
chillenn310 01-11-2004, 02:20 AM yeahh I have the same exact problem at other gas stations. I wont even work on the smallest slot, so I have to hold it just slightly for a while. Its a pain, but I love my scion.. hahah
MrSmiley 01-11-2004, 03:57 AM As a scion owner outside of Cali ... yes it happened to me too... I discovered if you set the lock on the nozzle 1/2 way .. aka 2nd bump outta 3 (usually) it won't click off. I figure if that's the worst thing I have to deal with.. I'm doin good
aznr1c3bo1 01-12-2004, 04:47 AM i have over 4000 miles and have not heard of this problem. it has happened a couple of times but it was the gas station not my car. weird.
Kikaida 01-13-2004, 08:08 AM Yup, happened to me the first couple of times I filled it up, then I swiched stations and its been fine ever since (2200 mi). The first time it happend it kept clicking and clicking til the thing overflowed :x ...I was soooo FUELED w/anger (pun intended). The Shell's I go to now are cool.
ginnis 01-13-2004, 08:56 PM out here in upstate ny all of the gas stations have removed the thing that let's the gas stay on w/o you holding it...it's a state law, it's been that way for a couple of years, so i'm used to standing there holding the pump. just a few more weeks and i'll rocking the first xb in rochester, ny. woo-hoo

It actually happens with the auto pump on or off. Even if you stand there holding it it'll click and click and click...(I'm actually getting ____ed just re-creating it in my head :x ). Congrats on the XB! Man, that would've sucked to have to wait that long! After I special ordered mine here in cali, it took bout 5 bus days then I was in BOX heaven!
its_ikon 01-14-2004, 12:09 AM my g/f's xA doesn't do it. this seems like it is happening with more xB's though. she uses shell gas stations.
gstuiep 01-15-2004, 04:22 AM hello,
anyone else find it scary that the one guy said he filled it with the engine running???? NEVER DO THAT!!! Its unlikely. but it could explode!
Also its not "a toyota thing" I worked at a dealership for a few yrs and my dad is a Master diag tech at a local dealership...they should not do that! My advise would be take it back to the dealer!!! Thats what the warranty is for fellas! There may be a TSB (technical service bullitin) (basically a problem toyota knows about, but doesnt want the public to know about so when u bring the vehicle in they just fix it) Kinda like a recall, but car compaanies only do recalls if it is a safety problem in most cases. If enough of you complain about it toyota will have to find a solution!!!
Just my 2 cents :D
by the way...my 1991 celica does it sometime, but not frequently and only at a specific pump at a specific station...not very where
Yeah, when Scion called me to check up on my new ride--
I told them about the gas clicking off all the time
I think it's maybe inadequate venting of the fill tube.
Oh yeah I'm from Wisconsin and have 6k on my xB and it did that from day 1
swtbabiboi4u 01-29-2004, 04:37 AM thats strange shouldn't do that. i pump gas all the time and that problem only occured like 2 3 times the most... im in the 408 95123 area... what about you?
CubiXBb 01-29-2004, 05:12 AM Yeah, it's annoying as hell...but I guess you get use to it
Bicepeak 01-31-2004, 12:37 AM It works fine for me...used the clip twice and last time I held the handle the whole fill-up. Only my 3rd fill up on my new Scion....:)
Sean
Djuan 01-31-2004, 12:51 AM it happened twice before but it stopped, and never did again...
DibujoB 01-31-2004, 12:59 AM I was having this problem like crazy, and then someone posted here that you need to just hold it in a little for a few seconds until it gets going.....then pull the handle up the rest of the way and lock it.
This technique has worked great on my last 4 or 5 fill-ups. Give it a shot, let us know if it works for you too!

Who is taking pictures of you while you are getting gas?
Doc
Djuan 02-02-2004, 12:30 PM maybe you have a little bushman underneath your car, who only tries to communicate with you when you fill up...
kdanie 02-09-2004, 02:54 AM You guys haven't been under your cars much ehhh??? I was under my Xa today looking at the rear suspension and noticed the fuel tank vent pipe.... No, wait a minute.... that 1" pipe is the FILL pipe!!!! Now wonder it occasionally gags on the fuel.....
ken
Munch 02-09-2004, 02:58 AM I've filled mine up 5 times and It dosen't happen with mine :D . I guess I'm just lucky

damn dude
i only have 105 miles!!!
I have about 7 times more than that now
kdanie 02-09-2004, 05:08 AM It depends on the quality of gas and the temp of the day. The higher the temp-the more fumes, the lower quality gas generally makes more fumes. If your Karma sucks that day you may be trying to pump in gas faster than the vent and fill tube can handle it will click off. I've only had this problem a couple of times and after looking at the fill pipe size it's easy to see why. Filling at half throttle worked for me.
ken
pmpnxb 02-09-2004, 06:51 AM I had the problem... but the little old asian guy at my gas station told me to turn the nozzle sideways and it won't shut off... Since i've been filling with the nozzle sideways (on stations that it clicks) I havent had a problem filling at all... sounds odd but it worked for me :D
NemoBronsky 02-11-2004, 12:29 AM lmao where i live 99% of the gass pumps dont even have the lever so you can set it and forget it. you guys are lucky
CBSIMONSEZ 02-11-2004, 08:20 PM Lucky is living in NJ, where fuel is cheap, and they pump it for you. Ill say no thanks when ( if ) my RS1 gets here, and pump it myself.
Bicepeak 02-12-2004, 12:44 AM Still works fine for me.....:)
rbloedow 02-12-2004, 01:55 AM Nope, haven't had that problem.....................yet.
satchell77 02-12-2004, 12:43 PM Filled mine up for the first time yesterday and had the same freekin problem. just kept clicking and clicking and clicking....half way through my clicking a car pulls in at the pump behind me and starts to fill up. The fine A$$ woman gets done filling her tank up... what am I freakin doing???? Click Click Click Click Click Click Click Click Click. Next time I am going to count how many clicks i can do. Pumping gas sucks.
Chris
rbloedow 02-13-2004, 03:11 AM I wonder why I don't have this problem................................... :?:
Love_My_Hotbox 02-14-2004, 05:53 AM It is so embarrassing to be filling up your new car and have gas problems. People look at me like "woman, you aren't supposed to top it off!" I worked at a gas station. I know that. But I swear, I ain't topping it off! Everyone's already looking at your car and when you are having trouble with it, it's humiliating.
Bicepeak 02-17-2004, 11:42 PM Still working for me and I go to many types of stations.
Sean
Munch 02-17-2004, 11:45 PM I wonder why I don't have this problem................................... :?:
I've been to gasstations all over NY,NJ and PA and I haven't had that problem at all. I guess they fixed that problem before I got mine :D
ghost 02-18-2004, 12:58 AM Depressurization takes 3 Seconds not 3 minutes.
Just stand there and pump the gas like the old folks used to, it won't kill you!
Andrew
Sciontuner 02-18-2004, 03:21 PM yea i called the dealership and they said because im driving my car too much and my gas level is too low. so i need to have a chat with those punks, yelling at me and saying i drive my car bad! it was there fault the whole time!
MIKEY 02-18-2004, 03:55 PM yeah, same problem, I figured out that to stop this, all you need to do it set the auto pump on the first latch, not the one that will hold it down all the way, THEN you go and push the grade that you want, and it won't stop. Usually takes a bit longer to fill up, But atleast, I don't need to stay there and hold it..
Hope this helps
randode 02-18-2004, 04:04 PM good thing mines electric
Spider13 02-22-2004, 05:40 AM i know this is kind of late but I had a a Dodge Shadow that did the same thing. If you slide the nozzle out just a little it will run with no problems. I think the problem is a bend or something in the filler neck and when the pump is all the way in it splashes back and sets off the pump cut off.
Just my idea, I dunno if my XB will do it. It's not ehre yet.
TheScionicMan 02-25-2004, 09:28 PM I think it comes from the pump nozzle. I used to get this alot in my Echo. Try this:
The first time it clicks off, keep the handle squeezed open and pull it up about an inch but not out of the fill tube. With the handle still squeezed, give it a little shake like the last few drops at the urinal. Push the nozzle back in and rotate it alittle to about the 3-4 oclock position. Slowly squeeze the flow and bring it up a notch at a time and let it rotate down to 6 oclock and you can usually let go.
I know it sounds stupid, but i think the mechanism that senses the backflow gets filled up and this maneuver gets that out of there. I would bet the idiot gassing up before you topped off his tank and threw off the pump mechanism
Hope it helps. I haven't had this prob with my xB and I usually hit Costco or Safeway for gas. Good Luck.
drivenapollo 08-21-2004, 03:46 AM I have not noticed that problem on mine. I have fueled 3 times, and only at sunoco so far. I just pull off the cap, and put the nozzel in normal and let it go.
