View Full Version : In need of resonator help.
Karazi 02-15-2008, 08:17 AM Hi this is my first post, but I have been lurking around for awhile now. So I finally got the nerve to modify my exhaust had a magnaflow muffler custom installed in place of the stock unit, about a week later I decided to open it up to 2.25 inches from the s-pipe back, but when the guys at the muffler shop got to that scuba tank/resonator. They said they couldn't remove it because it contained a ceramic honeycomb in it just like a cat, but it only goes for 1/4 the length of the resonator?
Would removing it have any adverse affects to my vehicle other than the obvious of making it louder, and is it actually a cat, because I couldn't find an 02 sensor after it.
Thanks for the help.
XD40tC 02-15-2008, 10:31 AM Do it now! Its not a tumor!
Zsanz 02-15-2008, 11:45 AM haha some guy on youtube removed his dont know where you live but i dont think thatd fly in cali, you can get a less restrictive resonator but i say snag a glasspack to get the tones a little bit lower cuz youll be really ricy if you take that out
IMO
was there any 02 sensors from the spipe back? i just got the borla and i want it to be loulder!!!!!
swartzautoman 02-15-2008, 12:49 PM one of the things i don't like about removing the resonator is that it will put alot more black crap on your back end.
i know you have see one, that realy nice looking import with the cool exhaust and the black 2 foot circle on the bumper over the exhaust tip.
Velocitysport31 02-15-2008, 02:41 PM The strup exhaust is a cat back exhaust and there mid pipe has a small reasonator that replaces the stock one, and there local socal, so i dont think there is a problem with california emissions, muffler shops are not emissions specialist.
06scioxb 02-15-2008, 03:57 PM i got it removed and i went 2.5" from s-pipe all the way but kep the axle back but installed2 resonators cause it was loud but now it sounds nice and it has a nice tone i have been meaning to pot pictures and sound clip maybe later today i will
miketf1 02-15-2008, 04:30 PM wait so no one can confirm that there is a cat in the resonator? damn from what i gathered around this forum i thought there was a cat...
Karazi 02-15-2008, 04:37 PM Ya I need to know if it is a cat, I have to worry about emissions here in new mexico. From what I measured when they cut it of the first 4 1/2 to 5 inches of the resonator is that ceramic honey comb a cat is made out of, and the rest if just a resonator tube.
06scioxb 02-15-2008, 05:14 PM YEAH IT IS A PRE-CAT THAT THEY CALL IT
whitebreadbox 02-16-2008, 12:49 PM its called a "3-way cat". the main cat is in the exhaust manifold right off the front of the motor. the scuba tank one is a secondary unit to clean up what ever the first one missed. if you do anything, keep all the stock emissions stuff in tact. if you relplace the scuba tank, have a shop build a direct bolt in piece, so if you have to get it inspected in the future, you can just slap the stock stuff back in and pass, then put the stuff you removed back in. it might seem like a pain, but try scraping off a failed inspection sticker. LOL :P
Velocitysport31 02-16-2008, 04:42 PM If your socal i have a shop can do a cat back system including muffler and flanges so you can go back to stock easy for 260
06scioxb 02-17-2008, 05:34 AM yeah my brother in law who works at a muffler shop did a bolt on from s-pipe to axle back

axle back sits a bit low but it is a easy fix
miketf1 02-17-2008, 06:26 AM from the looks of it you kept the stock axle back and no second cat?
the sound is most likely what i am looking for... i think that your setup mated with the trd muffler i will get the sound i really want. what are the specs of the resonator?
I replaced my resonator with a 15" glasspack. Then had the muffler shop rebuild the mid-section w/ 2.5" piping, flanged up to the TRD axleback (which is also 2.5" piping). Works great, sounds great, love it!!!
coryjames 02-18-2008, 12:53 AM i have a strup header trd muffler and took out the factory mid pipe and replaced it with a cat to keep it some what emissions friendly

cincinfocal 02-18-2008, 05:16 PM sixx how much did it cost to get the muffler shop to create that piece for you? i am following your footsteps to get the same set up...
coryjames 02-18-2008, 11:41 PM are you going with a header put a cat on or your car will never pass emissions
ShaffNasty 05-15-2008, 10:04 PM I am wondering if the car would pass smog if you had after-market headers, a fast-cat, and after-market axel back? Anyone got hook-ups at a smog check place to test it out?
miketf1 05-16-2008, 03:01 AM no cause you removed emissions control parts
