Default Tapping or Ticking sound at Idle.... HELP

ok........ I just put my very first full tank of sunoco 87 after 47k of premiun gas.

I have gone about 50 miles AND there is a tapping or ticking sound when the car is idleing. I opened the hood and it was a relatively pronounced fast tick that matched the idles speed.

It completely stops when I touch the gas.

Now I did install and fujita CAI about 1k ago but WTF.

Somebody please help me understand this

check your oil

Check the CAI where it goes into the fender for clearance

If good and good then it maybe a spark knock

May need valves adjusted

go look at ur CAI. if ur situation is like mine, the body of the car might be drilling a hole through ur CAI. What i didnt know was that there was a piece of metal sticking out thats covered by the fender that is just there. i dont know why, but i hear clicking sound myself too then i found that it was my fujita CAI hitting up against some piece of metal when my car was stopped. go check to see if its banging up against anything

Thank you for all the quick responses.

Gotta love SL. I have learned so much.

CAI: Right after I installed the CAI I bought the Dr I piece that fits in there to stop it from that from rattleing (by the way I got that and the piece to cover the gap near the radiator... I had it like 3 or 4 days worth it.)

The tapping was kinda loud but I really couldn't pin point where it was coming from. It may be that it was just rattleing in the CAI and echoing. huh? even though it is 19 degrees out. I'll go check.

So I'm curious as all hell.

I go out and start my car with sweat pants on and a robe... oh yeah and snow boots and a skully. I start my car ...

NO noise ... nothing just the beautiful sound of intake and the exhaust.

I wait I wait

nothing.

I dont' know

Cold oil hot oil - probably just a lifter - you should not get any piston knock at idle since timing is not that far advanced and there is minimal load on the engine. The knock sensor will adjust the timing almost immediately for the different octane gas.

i had a ticking noise coming from the throatle body when i first installed my injen cai, but it it was adjusting or something cause i haven't heard it since. Might be because i can't hear much of anything anymore with my megan drift spec and alphawerks headers.

it's the VSV (vacuum switching valve)

it ticks for warm idle control... it's even there stock without an intake, but the sound is more defined with one

it's normal.

Yup and it should stop clicking when you open the thorttle a little since is is only controlling the idle speed. A little valve noise is normal but a really loud single valve can indicate excessive valve lifter clearance which can sometimes be caused by carbon buildup on the valve seat or valve face. Usually a good high speed run will blow that out or some carbon cleaner in the gas . . . or gas with better cleaners in it like the higher test gasolines.

This is the thing that is tapping. When I hit the gas it stops by then it starts right back up again as soon as it get down to idle.

WHat is it and why is it tap tap tapping?

Looks a little different than the xB but it has an electrical connection and connects to the intake RIGHT? Idle speed control valve maybe combined with some crankcase vent - hard to tell from the photo where the hoses go exactly. Should not be a problem and you may have a slightly different setting on your mechanical idle stop on the throttle plate than before causing it to work a little extra to keep it idling at the right speed. Could be you just didn't notice it before either. Basically it lets air past the butterfly throttle valve to keep the engine running at idle at the speed the ECU wants . . . faster when cold and slower when hot. It does it by opening and closing an air valve (the clicking noise) to regulate how much air goes through it.
