As it states above, I am trying to understand why people post items in the general PPC section and then want local pickup only. I can understand the reluctance to ship a body kit or motor due to cost and hassle to package, but just cannot think of a good reason not to send other things.
Are people worried about bad checks or don't want to go through Paypal? It just seems odd to me to advertise on a nationwide forum and then limit your customer base to driving range only. Is it really that difficult to take said item to Mailboxes Etc, Pakmail or any other place that does professional packing and shipping for a living? Just add the extra cost of boxing and shipping to your sales price. At the local Pakmail they get a lot of eBay business and will even give a quote over the phone if you tell them package size and weight.
Sorry for the rant, it just bugs me when I see some mod I'd like to buy and then I read Local Pickup Only. Guys and gals, your stuff would sell a lot quicker and probably at a higher price if you were willing to ship.

people don't wanny get scammed by some phantom buyer who takes their ish, and never sends money back.
besides, you say they advertise on a national forum but limit their purchase to local people only, since it is 100%, just need 50 posts on scionlife to post a for sale, so there you go.

Sell and ship your tires/rims someday and then ask the question.

I agree with the above- its a pain in the butt to ship big items and I don't want to get scammed- I don't know if I should trust pay pal and the one time I told someone I'd ship an item to VA once I got the check in my bank, they didn't want to wait...which sounded fishy to me
hence the reason I've been trying to sell my rims for like 8 months haha I keep getting hits from VA or NC =/

As stated in my OP,
Sorry if I did not clarify, things like a hood, hatch, glass or other large and fragile items I can certainly understand a reluctance to ship. I do find the "because the seller will lose money from cost of shipping" to be flawed though, when the seller sets the price. The seller can add in shipping costs. Try DHL if you're unhappy with UPS.
I have not shipped rims, but have sent out similarly sized and weighted items (full-size PC tower, exhaust system) without issue. Sorry to single out an area, but Jonathan hit it on the head, every time I see something that would be nice, I see SOCAL pickup only
.
Dudehitt, thanks for the clarification, I wasn't aware PPC couldn't be listed in regional areas.

It's not always laziness, but also time. I was going to ship a door panel and it took me 2 days to find the right sized box. I found it behind a Sears, had to cut it up to make the dimensions smaller and UPS still wanted $76 to ship it ground!
I emailed the buyer and he asked me to break up the pieces, anyways it was too much of a hassle and I refunded.
Also, I think for people who have not used shipping services a lot, think it's a hassle. I have shipped lots of things because I used to sell A LOT on eBay and getting to know how things worked took some time. As in all the different services and companies you can go with and finding which is cheaper. So I can see how dealing with USPS, UPS, FedEx, etc could be confusing to an occasional seller.
