OK guys story time. The most RANDOM fricken thing happened to me last night. I am driving home from my girls house, its a late night and nobody is on the road, all of a sudden... I am driving by a cross street and there is a 2006+ audi A4 2.0T sitting at the stop sign (it was dark...couldnt tell exact year but was the newest body style available). I am wondering why they arent moving. So I go ahead and gas through the stop sign and they bolt after me. They get behind me and straight RIDE my bumper. I am like who the crap are these guys. We get to another stop sign that leads to the main road. As we enter a road with two lanes, they floor it and drive around me. Now I have my windows down, blue neon interior lights flaring, so my car is all lit up. I look out to them as they drive by, 2 guys and 2 chicks in the car, the two girls are flipping me off, calling me a loser, f*g, h*mo, any name they could think of in the 3 seconds it took them to pass me. At this point I am thinking OK this HAAS to be someone I know because I still didnt really get a good look. So I am cruising at 50 mph in 4th. I drop it into 3rd and go after them thinking "hey, maybe its someone I know, maybe its someone I dont like or vise versa". I catch up with them and we are side by side. They start screaming at me calling me a f*g, loser all over again. The guys are joining in thinking they are tough sh*t. So they floor it and the 2 girls flip me off as they bolt off. K so I have established the fact that I didnt know em. maybe they were drunk. maybe they thought they were tough stuff...who knows...I didnt care... now before they took off we are doing about 60. I was in 5th. As they take off I was like oh hellllll no. I throw it in 3rd and just DUMP the clutch. My car is straight screaming(dont get me wrong I aint that fast. my car is brand new, I just started on it, so I dont even have all the bolt ons. Now at this time they were about 3 cars ahead of me. They saw me coming and I saw the rear suspension of the audi dump out...which obviously means they floored it ot try to race. hahaha too bad that car is one of the weakest slowest turboed cars on the market because I romped on them. as I drove by I didnt even look over... I just extended my middle finger right back...Didnt hear a WORD from them this time(maybe my exhaust drowned em out. rofl. So after I am like 10 cars ahead of them and they finally realized they werent gonna catch me, I went ahead back to cruising speed (55 mph). here they come...AGAIN!!! man dont the F*ckheads ever learn. Sure enough, they drive by AGAIN and repeat the same crap. AGAIN I dump the clutch and go after them...heres where it got a little out of hand and I seriously thought they were drunk. Sure enough I pull on them just like I did before. But just as I get to about 1 car length behind them, the driver of the audi swerved into my lane and stood on his brakes. On this part of the road to my right is a small...maybe 25 foot deep ravine. I, like any driver who knew what to do in an emergency situation, stepped on my brakes and as fast as humanly possible I turn the wheel to the right without jerking it too hard and loosing control. Because to my left is the opposite lane so I couldnt go left. SOMEHOW my ABS wasnt enough for this. BOTH of my front tires locked up enough to the point where I lost steering. Not totally locked but enough. So here I am rocketing towards this ravine. I let completely off the brakes and grab the E-Brake as I turn the wheel back to the left in order to bring the back end around in order to get the car pointing away from the ravine and towards the opposite lane on the left side. Right as I get my nose where I need to, I dumped the clutch and put my foot to the floor. The car recovers. By this time these guys are WAY ahead of me because they probably thought I was gonna crash and wanted to be no part of it. I think not. I take a second to let my heart beat settled because that scared the living crap out of me. I step on the gas and go after them...ready to rip each and every one oftheir heads off. I FINALLY see them jerk into a neighborhood. I follow them in. I pull up next to them and what are they doing? LAUGHING at me! I said pull the F*** OVER!. The guys, OBVIOUSLY THINKING they were tough...sure enough did. We both come to a stop and I step out ofthe car with a mag light ready to pound them. The girls were the first ones to see it. They screamed to the driver to leave. He saw me. saw the big medal club for a flashlight I had, slammed his door and tried to speed off. I knew I couldnt cahse them on foot so I hucked the light at the car as hard as I could. It SMAACKED their back bumper. That didnt stop them. They sped off. I took about 10 minutes to recap what just happened, Let myself settled down, and I got back into my car and left. I really hope I put a FAT dent in the 30 grand car rich mommy and daddy bought them. Man what a night

Wow dude thats a crappy story and im glad your ok, but in situations like that you just got to let losers like that drive on past and not even try to race or catch up to them, they obvioulsy have no respect and dont care if they put their or your life or car in jeopodary. Just try and stay cool and let them drive by and if they slow down to harrass you more just pull off somewhere give it a min and continue on your way......It is not worth your life to prove your not a pushover or a tough guy...I have been there and done the same thing you have and will never do it again after my friend was ran off the road and killed doign the same thing you just did

A few pointers:
Your ABS did not fail. What happened was that you induced understeer severe. By slamming the brakes, you transferred all the weight forward, and the ABS should have kept them at the limit of traction. But because you braked and at the same time applied steering input, you over loaded the front outside tire... Front heavy FWD vehicles will do this, even with light to moderate steering input. Most FWD are already probe to understeer, and heavy braking will exponentially increase the effect.
Good job unloading the front tires by ripping the ebrake and powering out... That probably saved your life. That's one way to do it, but ideally if you plan on trail braking (braking into a turn), apply brake first, let the ABS sort itself out for a second, and the continue braking and steer. But what you did was the "drifters" approach, which is an emergency way to recover when coming in too hot.
It sounds like these guys knew the road, and were trying to bait you into getting in an accident...
Next time, sum for the tail lights to incur max damage when swinging.
And next time, don't race. I'm not going to flame you, as I like the rush too, but try to save it for the track.... Or at least save it for either a road that you know very well or a long empty stretch with plenty of visability. You're lucky you didn't hurt yourself or an innocent bystander.
Those guys were jerks and deserved what they got. If it were me, I would have skipped the racing and jumped to the part where I tell them to pull over and beat the living snot out of them and their car (which is pretty stupid too, but I've got anger issues...).
PS, petroleum jelly is almost impossible to remove from glass as it gets into the pits. If you score S hit and they turn on the wipers they will lose all forward visability. I have a few PJ water balloons handy in the glove box.

Sorry that happened to you man. I run into rich little snobs like that all the time, just let them pass you up and laugh at them when you drive by and the cops have pulled them over. I'm 26 and proud to have my Scion...I own it, no payments. Whereas my brother-in-law's sister just got a brand new 2008 G35 sport sedan ($38,000). It's funny because her and her friends _____ and complain all the time how they didn't get the car or color they wanted. I think it's hilarious to see these kids get the most expensive thing and then just to pick on a Scion late at night. Snobs really have no lives.

But yes you guys are right. I probably shouldnt have done that. But I felt at least like they need to learn their lesson. The cops werent there to enforce it. And what if they did that to a lesser driver? Someone new behind the wheel (aka 16 yrs old). I dunno its just people liek that deserve to get theirs. Gently countersteer and (if it safe and you have room to move) apply throttle. Be careful to not overshoot and rocket yourself in the opposite direction. With a proper suspension set up, heck, even just a rear away and sticky tires, under steer can be easily controlled in this car with mild steering input. If you are 100% stock, I do not recommend practicing, as the car will buck, pitch, yaw, and roll wildly as traction will come and go, making it an unpredictable flying missle. I recommend a professionally supervised racing course to practice. Oversteer should only occur at EXTREME at the limit conditions for the tC, or you have to be doing some really crazy stuff (ie trying to induce oversteer on purpose).
SquallLHeart
03-12-2008, 10:31 PM
yea.. i haven't street raced either despite the annoying and stupid drivers that try to mess with me.
after a bit of ignoring, they tend to just let it go. for those that continue, i either make another turn to lose them, exit off the road, or just plain straight up call the cops.
there is a clear distinction between driving stupid, and driving fast...
and driving fast and stupid.. is what kills people.

to make it simple. Its actually much easier than everyone says to maintain control of your car during an oversteer. Its when you loose control of your oversteer that it becomes a biotch to recover. But like he said. If you back end is going right....turn right into the skid. and when its heading left...do the same to the left...apply gas as needed.

racing will always have its dangers. Whether its on a regular open street at midnight with no other cars or on a track with no other cars. yes the terrain is different. but one mistake = owchie. I DEFINITELY understand where you are coming from tho. You do make a great point. dont get me wrong. I may have put my life in danger. But if I didnt teach them a lesson. What would happen if they decided to do that again to a less experienced driver? someone WOULD have been hurt. Now experience isnt fool proof I know. But I will know how to control my speeds better.
djct_watt
03-13-2008, 12:54 AM
^it's not just learning better control... With the exception of drag racing, ALL professional drivers do not go full speed down a track until they learn the turns first. Most will go at slow to medium speeds for a few practice runs.... And some will even go as far as walking around the track to fully learn every inch and detail.
You sound like you're better than the average driver(please do not let that get to your head or make you over confident), but what put you in danger was the fact that you were surprised by the turn.
Good checklist for "spirited" driving:
1. Are you on a track? You should be. If not then,
2. Do you know every turn in the course?
3. Are you 100% certain there is no traffic and/or pedestrians?
4. Do you have clear visability? The absolute minimum is the distance needed to stop at the anticipated speeds. Ie, what if terrain changes, ie down tree or pedestrian on road.

^it's not just learning better control... With the exception of drag racing, ALL professional drivers do not go full speed down a track until they learn the turns first. Most will go at slow to medium speeds for a few practice runs.... And some will even go as far as walking around the track to fully learn every inch and detail.

trust me bro I NEVER let what I can and can't do go to my head. I can definitely hold my own on the road I know this. but I am FARR from invincible. And well yea I was totally suprised. I never thought that those guys would resort to that crap.

of course the maglite is ok, its a maglite. did you catch their plate number?
i would have definitely just slowed down a lot and let them go away(especially late night with no one around), much like you do when there is an _______ driver driving like a maniac in broad daylight. if they're in that much of a hurry i just back off and let them kill themselves. don't want any part of that!

nah didnt get the plates. Was too busy trying to get my heart rate down from both having to recover from a 65 mph slide and ready to beat the living hell out of them.

It is good to hear that you're ok! The car, too!
With that being said, I must tell you that I agree with 2 much tC completely here. You are correct in that racing will always have it's dangers, but WHY would you increase it's dangers by driving on a road that you don't know very and pushing your car's (beyond it's) limits? This not only put you in danger but anyone else on the road as well. When you understeered what if their had been a minivan with a family coming back late from somewhere? Hurting yourself is one thing, but that is a choice that you made. The family in the minivan didnt get to make a choice. Just something to think about...
You can always do that kind of driving on an autocross track or even an empty parking lot if you can find one big enough. A few guys I worked with years ago at a Wendy's used to water down the back parking lot after we closed (2 a.m.) and we would shred around for fun. This causes minimal risk to breaking parts or causing too much extra wear.
And as far as teaching them a lesson, all you really taught them is that "Hey, these childish antics actually WORK! Let's try it again some time." So, now they may intentionally target someone younger or physically smaller already knowing that it worked once before. This next driver may not be as lucky as you were to right youself. Worse yet, what if THEY decide to carry some type of blunt weapon as a "just-in-case" type of thing and bludgeon the unsuspecting driver they taunted.
Racing has it's place, just not on the streets...

I have to be honest... If I had been in that same situation, I wouldn't have hit the bumper... It probably would have been thrown at the back window... Glad you're alright.

holy sheet! That's one crazy story. Glad you are ok. That's a nice move you pulled to avoid that ditch. I'm also glad you had the balls to stand up to those jerks. You still got to keep your safety in mind tho. Still, one amazing story

You are an idiot. I'm gonna flame on you. Why wouldn't you just ignore it? Not to say I haven't done anything like that either, but come on bro. Seriously? I guess at 20 I would have done the same thing. But next time, let it go. What if you would have crashed? Died? Then what? Can't come posting on ScionLife making 400 daily posts like you usually do...
You sound horribly hypocritical in this post...
Please explain... Because I said I have done something like that before? Of course. At the age of 18-20, hell yeah I did. But now a few years later, I don't do it anymore.
First thing you do is call him an idiot, then admit to doing exactly the same things as him. However, I doubt you would classify yourself as an idiot...

I would classify 2 much tC as an idiot IN THOSE SITUATIONS where he put himself and others in danger. I would also classify myself as an idiot IN SITUATIONS where I put myself and others in danger. I learned the hard way after totalling two cars not do stupid sh!t. I never had an accident involving another vehicle but I just as easily could have. And that would have been a choice that the other person and/or their family did not get to make. They would not have deserved it, just as someone that Maniak could have hurt would not have. That being said, Maniak WAS an idiot IN THAT SITUATION...
Something to consider... You get a phone call one day at work and your father/mother/brother/sister/best friend was hit head on by some kid with road rage after being taunted by another driver. Would it be much comfort to you that "He knew his road skill and COULD have righted his turn had your family/friend's vehicle not been inconveniently in the way (IN THEIR OWN LANE, MIND YOU!)" and "He sure would have taught them a lesson, too.(the taunting driver, that is)"
Just some food for thought... I am glad everyone came out ok and I hope you are never in an article like one of the above. Those are just from a quick google search, btw.
No excuses, no way to justify something like that. You (and your victim's family) would have to live with it for the rest of your lives...
Edited for several typos, its late...

It is good to hear that you're ok! The car, too!
Racing has it's place......
...right, and its place is everywhere. True racers never turn down an opportunity to beat an unlikely opponent. its all about the match, its thrill, and the win...and also, the chances of coming across a minivan at 3am, are the same chances i'd have of getting a 2 dollar bill in my change. lets try and be real for once ppl. i doubt anyone would've acted differently. except for the part to pull over and start up a fight...i would've kept it on the street. the fact is we're all behind the wheel, we've all been given a license to drive, but we all race. and its responsibility will fall on ur shoulders for whatever action/reaction/consequence you face. you just have to be ready to not only go thru with the action but expect its consequences. we all know what we're doing, and what we're getting ourselves into. :come:

And completely full of sh!t. If nothing else is understood here then at least think about the fact that you will not be the only person who suffers if and when something goes wrong... Your family and the family of the potential victim will care. If you really can't understand that, then you really don't understand the responsibility of the license you hold. If one was not meant to exhibit responsibilty and mature control with a motor vehicle there would be no testing or age limitations.
As for the true racer BS, if you really think that an economy car and an attitude makes you some kind of a road warrior then that is simply foolish. That is not meant as an insult, but you MUST realize that when you do things like that yours is not the only life you put at stake.

...precisely my point. If you race you must be ready to face the consequences of your actions which could even result in the loss of a life. we all know this when we match up to that car at that red light...anything could go wrong. do u still go thru with it???...yes. a true racer understands that, and decides to pursue it or not according to his skill. if he fails he'll understand its consequences.

we've all been witnesses on how our "economy cars" have beaten numerous muscle cars and other imports in addition to the story that spawned this thread. Hence the reason why the "economy car" statement is rested on my case. also, humility is key whenever u race, because u simply DO NOT know what ur opponent has in its hood, this is why, in my case, cars do the talking. and about the lifes we risk...again, this is known fact amongst anyone with a driver's license, when u step on the gas not only to race an opponent, but when u back out of ur garage to go to work, ur life or someone else's could end right then and there...and dont dare tell me otherwise my brother. much love man.

All I know is there is no way your going to spend as much money as so many do on their cars to make them little rockets, and only take them to the tracks. I am sorry but if I am gonna spend 7 grand +, I am gonna have some fricken fun with it. There is not ONE person on this site who has put money into performance of their tC and NOT raced a single guy on the street or at LEAST fooled around with him/her. Anyone who can tell me that is a lying sack oh S***. I sell cars for a living. I can smell B.S. from a mile away. even through a computer :nails: and it doesnt take a genius to know that ANYONE who tricks out an economy car or buys a fast car or whatever they do, DOES have fun with it on the street.
