View Full Version : Shifter Cable Bushings (Dr Isotope)
x_Batman_x 04-07-2008, 05:20 AM So I know some people (including myself) were confused about how to install Doc I's cable bushings as he sends four while other companies include only two. I decided just to have at it and see if I could figure it out, and it turned out to be quite simple so I threw together a little DIY :-)
So start out by taking out the upper intake box and upper pipe. I decided that as long as I was going to take some of my stock intake out, I might as well take out the whole thing and throw on the CAI that has been sitting in my room since X-mas:

http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/acamden/photo-69.jpg
Alright now locate the two shifter end links, they are close to eachother and the most visible one is below the brake fluid tank:
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/acamden/photo-70.jpg
The other one is kind of hidden behind a part of the transmission assembly so just look around where the arrows are pointing:
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/acamden/photo-71.jpg
Okay now pull the lock pin out of the first one and put it somewhere safe because you'll be reusing it:
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/acamden/photo-72.jpg
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/acamden/photo-73.jpg
lift the endlink off the stud and push the stock rubber bushing out, and make sure not to drop the washer:
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/acamden/photo-74.jpg
you should have this:
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/acamden/photo-75.jpg
now go ahead and repeat the process for the other one:
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/acamden/photo-76.jpg
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/acamden/photo-77.jpg
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/acamden/photo-78.jpg
grab your new delrin bushings :-)
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/acamden/photo-79.jpg
mmm
Okay so I'll show you now how you are to assemble the bushings in the holes of each end link. What you do is sandwich them together with the ring of the endlink holding the narrow parts of both bushings. Heres how you are going to stack them:
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/acamden/photo-80.jpg
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/acamden/photo-81.jpg
okay so go to the first stud and place one of the bushings on it with the narrow side up:
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/acamden/photo-82.jpg
then place the end link on top:
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/acamden/photo-83.jpg
now the other bushing:
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/acamden/photo-84.jpg
and secure it with the lock pin
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/acamden/photo-85.jpg
repeat the process on the other link (sorry don't have as many pictures for the second link, but it shouldn't be hard to figure out):
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/acamden/photo-86.jpg
Anyways get in your car and make sure you can get into every gear
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/acamden/photo-87.jpg
put your intake back together (or in mycase install the CAI) and test out your new cable bushings :-)
Okay so I hope this helps anyone who is confused out. These bushings go great with the Doc's gearswitcher. The shifter moves into gears more smoothly and affirmatively. There is also less slop, they definatly complete the gearswitcher package.
WAlterEgo 04-07-2008, 07:05 AM nice write-up, thanks. too bad the pictures are dark n some are blurry. i'll be needing this in the near future.
x_Batman_x 04-07-2008, 10:21 PM yeah I should have looked for a better camera
Oh well lol
Bmcclure 04-07-2008, 10:42 PM i cant the maf sensor back on the stock airbox! the holes wont line up!
Ace83 04-07-2008, 10:45 PM there's a write up on this i believe but good FYI.. to add, dropping the pins in the engine is a no no
Bmcclure 04-07-2008, 11:04 PM nevermind i got it..im an idiot lol
x_Batman_x 04-07-2008, 11:06 PM there's a write up on this i believe but good FYI.. to add, dropping the pins in the engine is a no no
Oh yeah for sure, be real careful guys if you dont push them in steadily they might spring out of your grip.
Oh and Bmcclure, are you having trouble plugging the MAF back in or sticking the pvc valve thing into the bracket?
Ace83 04-07-2008, 11:07 PM especially when your are using some grease on the bushings they are slippery
x_Batman_x 04-07-2008, 11:08 PM nevermind i got it..im an idiot lol
oh okay nvm then lol. Good job :P
yellowxhoodie 04-09-2008, 11:38 PM wow good write. def gonna need this next week.
but 1 questions, whats the advantage to changing the bushing...?
just smoother shifts....?
Ace83 04-09-2008, 11:43 PM crisper shifts.. and easier engagements
x_Batman_x 04-10-2008, 12:32 AM yeah, its a bit smoother but moreover the real difference is that as Ace said its crisper. Its hard to accuratly explain, I suppose "more precise" sums it up pretty well.
amp0804 04-10-2008, 03:55 AM I actually had a hard time getting these on. They were just a LITTLE too big so I had to sand one down to get the pin in. Overall I feel the difference. Very impressive.
hawgs74 04-10-2008, 04:56 AM worthwhile mod?
x_Batman_x 04-10-2008, 05:53 AM worthwhile mod?
absolutly.
(if you have a short shifer, I dunno how it would feel on the stock one...)
danyo 04-10-2008, 06:53 AM yeah the shifts are definitely a bit more precise. Just installed my NST cable bushings two days ago and a skunk2 weighted shift knob at 440 grams. It makes my TWM stage II shortshifter more precise and easier to shift! A lot more fun to drive now.
cluelessTC 05-25-2008, 05:59 PM so dont reuse the metal washer?
x_Batman_x 05-26-2008, 07:53 AM thats right, do not reuse the metal washer. I actually tried to cram one on to the one of the links because it felt loose with just Doc Is bushings and I almost lost the loc pin for doing so.
huslindan 07-16-2008, 03:51 AM i have the twm ones i am gunna put them on tomorrow but the thing is one peice is it the same you think ?
x_Batman_x 07-16-2008, 04:43 AM i have the twm ones i am gunna put them on tomorrow but the thing is one peice is it the same you think ?
yeah its the same. the only difference is you slide a single bushing into the retaining ring rather than sandwiching two pieces in.
1DarkTC 07-17-2008, 05:35 AM I love the "click" I get into the gears w/ the bushings installed (and my doc I short throw) but getting it into Reverse is a _____ sometimes
garabaldy 07-17-2008, 09:03 PM watching
DonNguyen 07-17-2008, 09:37 PM from the write up, it sounds like u still need the washers...might wanna re-write that
x_Batman_x 07-20-2008, 12:32 AM from the write up, it sounds like u still need the washers...might wanna re-write that
actually it was made pretty clear through out this thread that one should not reuse the washers. This is also specified in the description of the bushings directly off of doctorisotope.com:
Cable Bushings
These bushings replace the sloppy rubber bushings at the transmission end of the shifter cables with solid delrin. Shifter feel is greatly enhanced, and gear-missing is dramatically reduced.
What's Included:
Cable bushing set: 4 solid delrin cable end bushings. Uses OEM retaining pin (OEM flat washer is not used). $27 shipped.
1DarkTC 07-20-2008, 04:15 AM Ya...I can vouch for NOT re-using the washers...seeing I have these cable bushings.
SquallLHeart 10-27-2008, 08:12 PM *click*.. *click*.. shifting is sweeeet
just a friendly bump! lol. :P
krazyscion 10-27-2008, 10:01 PM nice writeup..
Awesome write up, im thinking it was a pain and a half after doing it on my friends Civic Si but took me 15 minutes or so and done! Awesome Man!!
iheartzombies 05-11-2009, 07:10 PM Just got this done without even taking out the stock intake. Feels awesome! I have the megan short shifter and this made the throws feel easier and smoother than stock. Feels like the shifting in my girlfriends 08 civic now.
Kurtezle 05-12-2009, 09:39 PM yup just got mine as well and took about 10 minutes to install, shifts feel pretty smooth, and i also have it with the megan racing short shifter
Remii 05-15-2009, 08:41 PM Any chance of some updated photos? The links no longer work :(
x_Batman_x 05-15-2009, 09:37 PM whoa wtf is up with my pics? haha thats weird.
I will defiantly look into it soon, thanks for the heads up
Remii 05-15-2009, 09:44 PM =] Thanks!
x_Batman_x 05-17-2009, 05:47 AM well looks like the photos decided to work again hah
Remii 05-17-2009, 08:34 AM well looks like the photos decided to work again hah
Ok xP Sweet thanks!
wolfmanTC08 06-04-2009, 04:10 AM I installed mine before I installed the Doc I shifter and it makes a nice difference for the stock shifter.
rosedaleny806 06-21-2009, 06:50 PM so i jus installed mine, is it suppose to feel alot stiffer then stock???
So i installed these today. it was very easy and simple but it was tight to get into the actual stick thingy lol the Holes in the bushing themselves are very tight to get the thing to go threw them so i had to play with that for a bit to get them to go in all the way, then after installing them went inside the car and checked to see it would go into gear fine and it does but it feel very very STIFF/TIGHT in a way. going into gears seem very stiff the whole shifter ingeneral seems stiff. going into first gear it slides in stiff and no click, but going into every gear it clicks but again tight/stiff. is this normal? stock seemed very like "loose/flimsy" this jus seems to feel the gears out is this normal??
Ace83 06-21-2009, 07:01 PM did you grease it well? if not i suggest you do.. its gonna be stiffer than stock but you will get used to it
rosedaleny806 06-21-2009, 07:09 PM noo!!! i didnt even grease it at all i didnt know u had to. that could be it then. wat can i grease it with?
Ace83 06-21-2009, 07:15 PM its your choice, i greased mine with some supertech marine grease
rosedaleny806 06-21-2009, 07:20 PM hmm i wish i woulda done that it probably would have been easier to go in aswell. i might take them out and grease them, but besides that the stiff/tight feeling in the shifter is normal?
Ace83 06-21-2009, 07:26 PM yes its normal
rosedaleny806 06-21-2009, 07:47 PM ok thanx bro another question lol now I drove on the hwy and seems like in 5th gear it vibrates alot( the shifter) is that normal?
x_Batman_x 06-22-2009, 06:39 PM yeah I didnt grease mine at all and have had no problems...
im sure the vibrating thing isnt anything unusual, you probably only noticed it because you were looking for it.
rosedaleny806 06-22-2009, 06:54 PM yeah spoke to DR I about it, 5th gear always vibrates ingeneral but after puttin solid bushings more of the vibration from the tranny travles to the stick unlike the sloppy rubber bushing that held back a lot of vibration cause it was flexible compared to this. But this mod is definatly a bang for ur buck 27 bucks and its so much better it loosens up after a few days I love it
Diluvium 06-24-2009, 04:52 AM noo!!! i didnt even grease it at all i didnt know u had to. that could be it then. wat can i grease it with?
i think delrin material is self lubricant. if you lubricate it with other lubes the material it may dry out.
GammaTNT 06-24-2009, 06:12 AM delrin material is not self lubricant, my Doc I 's shift knob is made from Delrin .
rosedaleny806 06-24-2009, 08:12 AM the bushings feel better now, i love it lol
gp1817 06-24-2009, 11:11 PM what do you mean push the stock rubber things out...i got the pin out.i got the end link off.......how does the rubber piece come off any special way....do i grab it and pull it up or do i push something in and pops off..sorry didnt understand that
rosedaleny806 06-25-2009, 12:58 AM the rubber piece is the stock bushing, u need to jus push it out of the whole in the endlink. that's all, its hard to do but jus push and that's it.
gp1817 06-25-2009, 05:35 PM well i got them both out little difficult but got it....the end link that lays flat went in fine no problems...but the sidewards one the Doctor ISO bushing wouldnt fit tryed everything i was expecting it to go right on but i had to make the hole a tad bigger cause i dodnt want to force it on or ill never come off i something happens... so it would fit snug..but overall went fine.....made the shifter alittle tighter and get into gears for firmly....
rosedaleny806 06-25-2009, 05:39 PM yup mine was the same way for the sideways one it was a PITA to get it in but i didnt make the hole bigger jus kept pushing it in with a tiny hammer lol. but its tighter MUCH tighter and firm shifting
gp1817 06-25-2009, 09:05 PM im sure theres a reason why it like that..im sure they wouldnt make it so it doesnt go on.....but i didnt want to break anything with the hammer or pliers.....i made the hole little bigger just enough to get it on there i did use a little force....but i know a few people who done that also.....i did feel a difference in the shifter came tighter so i know i didnt make the hole any bigger then it was suppose to be i can always pick up more...the DIY here didnt say it would be a tight fit say said it would be like the first one so i assumed easy....
rosedaleny806 06-25-2009, 09:08 PM u did it right, so no worries. I thought I f'd sumthing cause it was tight to put in and the shifter itself was tight too. after a few days it becomes "looser" I like it. one thing I don't like is on the hwy in 5th gear u feel the shifter vibrate a lot more when u let go of the gas and step on the gas. but besides that I have no complaints
gp1817 06-25-2009, 10:29 PM LOL..yea not to worried i was just happy to get it on there....im saying why the hell is this so tight....then i remeber reading on here from a few people that they had to modify it alittle bit so it would at least go on..so i did that a boom went on put the other on made sure everything was in place and most important made sure i can get into all the gears..felt nice..took it for a spin for testing and everything was good....sometimes i feel like when people post DIY threads here they sometimes leave out things which people like me have to find out the hard way or read what others say that hows i knew... all is good...
i havent been on the HWY yet so il see what happen..
