here's my next project since im running out of things to do and i dont feel like studying....a short ram intake using an HKS filter, HKS filter cage, HKS coupling, and half an Injen pipe =p it gets pretty wet down here during the summer with all the storms..so i'm going short ram route for a little while. Or who knows i might keep it on if the torque gain is noticeable
what i started with, an old mid '90s prelude HKS intake kit, used off ebay. 80mm inlet (about 3", same as Injen piping) and a 150mm filter....trashed the filter it cause it was nasty, and the piping i probably wont need. the cage itself wasnt in too bad shape. few small rust spots but nothing a wire brush and sandpaper cant fix.
sanded and cleaned up the cage and filter housing and sprayed a few coats of flat black engine enamel, as well as cleaned up the black coupler, but i may ditch it and get a colored 3" intercooler coupler instead:
then i ordered two new HKS 150mm filters from a local performance shop, one "wine red" and the other "aegean blue". why two? well my plan was to have the filter color match the engine cover. my engine cover is red at the moment, but i like the blue of the filter so i may redo the engine cover to change things up a bit (duplicolor makes engine enamel in the exact same blue as the filter, convenient). they had all sorts of colors to choose from, like sunset orange, lime green, purple, etc. at $17 bucks a pop i wasnt hurting from buying two
couldnt find any user pictures of the two so this will do until i pick them up tomorrow =p the blue one's in the back, the red one isnt pictured.
will update when i get the filters tomorrow!

next step is to remove the secondary CAI pipe and throw throw this one on there. i'm wondering if the chrome will clash....i wish i had gone with the black Injen piping now =p

you can always flat black spray the injen piping. i was actually thinking of that.. but man... this is a really good idea... i might steal this idea later on for when i get an income...
Any update on how well this worked? I cant wait to see pics because I'll probably do something similar for next winter. When I went to throw on my Injen intake I was planning on only setting it up as a short ram untill the rainy spring season passed but I couldnt get it to fit right because of the size of the filter and the fact that it kept slipping over where the diameter of the pipe narrows. Dismayed i just completed the installation with it set up as a CAI and just use caution in the rain, but another option would be great for next year :-)
no update yet. i decided i'm going with the blue filter and bought a perfect match colorwise, duplicolor's "GM Blue" engine enamel. its gonna look great together.

nooo i didn't forget about this, in fact i finished it all up this weekend! i'm gonna be staying with this setup, it sounds wicked with the short ram and the low end torque is well worth it for the type of driving i do all day for work.
the chrome injen piping was throwing off the whole black/blue theme so i ended up ripping the injen emblem off the tubing, a little goo gone, washing it up and then sprayed 4 coats of black engine enamel paint on it. the black was kind of dull so i put three coats of black ultra flat camo on it which was just the black i was looking for.

Looks great. Looks like I'll be copying this idea for the winter season. I love how injen says you can set up their intake as a short ram but it really doesn't fit well at all. But I'm happy because now there is a solution to that :-).
P.S. wanna give me the lower section of your injen intake since I scratched up mine trying to weave it into the engine bay :-) ?
