View Full Version : 1ST LED SWAP ON AN XD COMPLETED! WOOT!

Since it is for my own car I decided to go with something simple, oem looking yet STANDS OUT! And of course since I am one of the led super swappers I can always change it

After taking apart the cluster, the tach section of the XD is tinted orange on the face itself. Not much you can do here but use red leds and make it red / or produce new gauge faces. I plan to make my own faces of high quality / and non expensive / fast turn around as I have been working on a few things I will be specifically producing them for the xd only at this time since I just bought one and love the car!

Well enough of my disgruntled babble, the point is for tonight’s swap, I had to use the oem face. So I thought what the heck, red and blue turn out HOT on tC's so why not do that theme here? Well long story short, the needles turned out WICKED! They look like blue lasers almost haha. And the red, well as anyone that has seen an led swap before will know, cameras NEVER do the work justice. So I did blue needles, red faces and blue fuel / trip comp screens. Blinkers & cruise are set to blue and all warning lights in red. Turned out GREAT! The XD cluster is so cool as it has a coating over the face of it that looks black, yet transfers light like it is not even over the face of the gauges. Very cool stuff. Think 3m makes it.

Bah, on to the pics. As stated, not the most wild work I can do by far but I think it looks very cool. Camera just does not show it right! The red is RED and the blue is BLUE! and it is freakin bright!

Will have a price soon for the swap, there are more friggen leds just for the face of the xD cluster than light up the tach, speedo, fuel and temp on the tC! 17 leds for just the speedo, tach, needle area vs 12 for the tC!

Hey, do we know how many LEDs are behind the HVAC controls on the xD yet? I'm lookin to order some LEDs to do my swap here pretty soon... I can't STAND that awful orange/amber color...

TrebleStauter
05-04-2008, 02:48 PM
This looks amazing! I dont think I could dislike a dash lighting color more than amber.

I have never considered doing a led swap before. Is it fairly simple once you have the dash unassembled? It sounds like the xD is more work than others, but should I just check the other forum?

I would love to see pics of the process you went through to change it. If that is possible at all. A buddy of mine just bought a new xB this week and dislikes the amber as well. I am thinking this could be a weekend project.

well coming from another gauge swapper, that looks tite, i have 2 that want swaps, my girlfriends xD and my friends wife's xD, so its nice to know "IT CAN BE DONE". Was it easy to take apart, i went as far as just taking out the bezel on my GF's car. Looks sweet man.. share the knowledge

Are you able to put together kits for xD swaps?

Say, if I wanted to do exactly what you have pictured, with the mode button swap and all, could you give a kit price?

Hey, I haven't had a chance to take out my HVAC yet... how many #74's are needed for the swap?

Garage1217

They are the twist in style, you need one per housing + leds to change the on/off lights. I used PLCC's custom mounted.

I could do somthing similar, but not 100% exact. I can do anything you like with the speedo side, but the tach side would have to be all red or orange.

Cool, I want the hvac lights in white to match the stock gauges.

Garage1217
08-07-2008, 06:04 PM
I have them in white, These are the ones I would recommend.
You have to retrofit them into the oe twist sockets.

rhino74s
08-07-2008, 06:06 PM
hmmm.... details on that retrofit?

Garage1217
08-07-2008, 06:09 PM
I can take pics of what to do. It is very simple...

Unwind the wires off the bulb in the twist socket.

Pull bulb out

Take the led bulb / Take the wires off the tab

Cut the tab off leaving the wires alone

Insert bulb into the twist socket & wind the wires like the stock lightbulb.

Replace. If it does not light up, turn the twist socket around on the board as the leds are directional!

That easy :)

How do you get to the mode control light on the steering wheel, and what style bulb is it.

Garage1217

It is a solder in plcc. You have to take off the airbag and remove the steering wheel control.

No can do. It's colored plastic. I suppose if you were brave enough to Xacto-knife the gauge face and put a film behind the opening, you could do that, but it would probably look like a$$.

Garage1217
02-19-2009, 05:01 PM
I stopped carrying the 3 led #74 bulbs for the hvac in the xd as I am working with the manufacturer on a slightly different version bulb for better overall coverage. Also it is not quite led light, but you can get instrument cluster bulb nipples in red, green or blue that will give the desired effect without having to go through the pains of retrofitting in a bulb.

Last, I use plcc-2 to replace the leds for the ac button & defrost button. I use a pair of flush cuts to nip off the old led & then solder the plcc-2 to the old legs.

Yes, that is no prob! Long as the tach is red, I can do the speedo in other colors.

If my xD wasn't a daily driver and I could get by a few days without driving it I would love to get this done. It just looks so awesome.

I looked thru the first page of this thread and went straight to the last. My questions is I am wanting to change all the lights out in the side to green......do you think this would be hard to do. Never really seen green before.....

i changed all mine to red. its kinda fun but not that functional lol. i swapped all the dome lights and also the back light in the trunk space. all were easy to do. just make sure to be careful with the front 2 lights. if you push the new bulbs too hard in the housings they will push up into the headliner.

Green would not be a problem at all, just remember the tach area in the xD with stock gauge faces has to remain red!

Hello, They are not bad to remove at all.
Gauge cluster...
- Grab the two plastic cross sections on each side of the speedo / tachometer. Pull hard and it all pops off. You will then see two wire harnesses plugged into the face of the cluster, unplug those. Last, there are two phillips screws at the bottom of the cluster. The heads face straight up so you cannot miss them. Take them out and pull the cluster out.

Clock
- Grab the top of the painted console and pull hard. The whole upper console will pull loose and come off around the radio with the clock attached. Unplug the clock and remove the two screws that hold it in place.
