View Full Version : Premium Head Unit Question
DREWxB08 04-26-2008, 10:38 PM A friend of mine wants to sell me a Premium HU for $200
Is this a good Price??
Am i gonna notice a Sound Difference? or any difference at all?
I know the major difference is the RCA's for amp's/Subs.
Any info on the Premium HU would be great!!!!!
Thanks guys
Its for my 08 SW xB2
detroitbassxb 04-27-2008, 01:41 AM It's a good price, yes. I sold mine on eBay for $325.
You won't notice a difference in sound, and from what I have heard, the sub outs are terrible. If you plan on getting amps, pass on the Premium and get something aftermarket.
randomsuper 04-27-2008, 02:02 AM i installed one in my friends 06 xa and there was a very noticeable difference in sound quality.

What's wrong with the sub outs on the premium HU?
detroitbassxb 04-27-2008, 02:15 PM I just heard they are incredibly weak. Plus, they change output power with your speed, so it is incredibly hard to set your amplifier's gain to teh right level, since you can't be driving around and tuning an amp.

Driving and setting the gain, that's a new one
But you can shut off the auto volume control so you output dosent vary with speed
jpauletteUSAF 04-27-2008, 04:25 PM Mine will be up for sale for $200-$250 range.
The sub outs aren't that great on this head unit, though. You can set the sound-leveling to low, but the head unit will still try to adjust the sub when you're at highway speed.
DREWxB08 04-27-2008, 10:56 PM Well i picked it up from a friend of mine he wanted $200 and i got him down to $150. Def Sounds good and look's Sweet to me. Just wanted someing simple noting too fancy and too out going, Besides i have an 02 Explorer With JL Audio Speakers and tweeters and a JL Audio W7 13.5 inc Sub. If i wanna go def for a little LOL

My sub outs aren't weak; there's plenty of signal getting to my amp. I set the gain with the car stopped. The volume of the entire system increases with speed when ASL is engaged.

As it should. If you have a premium head unit, you can disable ASL entirely.
DREWxB08 04-28-2008, 02:03 PM Question Were would the Amp Remote turn on wire hook up to?
memebag 04-28-2008, 02:14 PM Question Were would the Amp Remote turn on wire hook up to?
There's a gray wire in one of the harnesses that plugs into the back of the HU you can splice into. There's a thread on this forum with a great pic that shows it. I'd post the link but it's at home. Try searching for it.

What sub's are you running in your car and how are you likeing the head unit with the set of SW outputs

I have a Fusion kit (12" sub, 300w amp) Fry's was selling for $150. It sounds great on the head unit SW outs, but it makes me want to upgrade the door speakers.
Armoredmeat 04-30-2008, 02:05 PM i have noticed on the premium hu that the aux input is a little lower than cd or fm. i have a sirius sportster plugged into it and it just doesnt get as loud at the same volume level as the other inputs. i've checked the sportster and the output vol is all the way up. is there a way to increase the sensitivity of this input or has anyone else noticed this?

I never noticed that issue on my Starmate Replay. I haven't found any way to change the input level on the AUX input.
xFistsClenchedx 04-30-2008, 03:31 PM Don't auxiliary inputs compression the sound somehow? If that was true, that would be why. I could also be wrong though :blah:

No. Why would they?
If that was true, that would be why. I could also be wrong though :blah:
Dynamic range compression usually raises the noise floor, so the perceived sound would be louder.
DREWxB08 05-01-2008, 11:35 PM I think im gonna get a Set of 10" alpine Type R's and a nice amp and i should be fine im happy with the radio so far.
xFistsClenchedx 05-02-2008, 03:27 AM No. Why would they?
I'm probably confusing the auxiliary inputs with those car kits where you have to insert a cassette tape into a deck lol. I also realized I said compression instead of compress, which makes me look like Oswald Bates here.

just thought i would answer my own question now that i found the issue. on the sportsters, at least the one i have (sportster 4), the line out drops its output level a little when the FM transmitter option is set to ON. you can see the difference by setting the UV Meter background on the radio and then switching the FM transmitter on and off on the sportsters dock.

Ah. I turned my FM transmitter off when I plugged it in the AUX jack. That makes sense now.
generem 05-06-2008, 03:21 PM Im running an alpine mrp-f550 powering type s component in the front and coax in the rear using both F and R rca and an almani 1100 powering a 12" kicker and Im very happy with the Premium HU performance. But then again... I really dont have much to compare it too. I wished I had a bit more tuning control but right now it sounds greate to me thru the rca jacks
