With current gas prices now and for the summer...
what do you guys think about buying a horse for transportation? Can we start a revolution by riding horses around again like back in the old cowboy days? Are there any laws for riding horses in public and parking them?

A 25HP Kawasaki Ninja 250 can easily out run a tC (and many other cars) from 0-60 and 1/4 mi, and they can get up to 70MPG... Food for thought.
Plus, horses eat grain. If bio-fuels get bigger than they already are, we'll see the cost of feeding a horse exceed the cost of a tank of gas. I've yet to hear of anyone dying of oil starvation... But considering world hunger, hippies seem to have no thoughts about converting previous food into fuel. Tell me how much 12 gallons of anything is...
Fuel is still relatively cheap, considering that it is a limited resource and INSANE amounts of capital go into producing it. A big reason oil is so profitable isn't just the margin (which is actually small); but rather the fact that this country is so stupid as to consume and waste so much of it. I'm so happy that the SUV fad/era is finally drawing to a close.
That being said, I hope we can weed out all these SUV's and drop the price back down again when demand for oil drops. High prices are hurting my wallet and the entire US (as well as world) economy. I'm no hippie and believe in people's right to choose their vehicle. But I also believe in my right not to get killed by some multi-tasking soccer mom in Caddilac Escalade on dub wheels.
The holiday gas tax break idea is a joke, IMO. If I had it my way, I'd tax the living snot out of any non-commercial SUV or any vehicle getting less than 19MPG, and require a special driver's license for all heavy vehicles. There are strict laws for owning guns, yet in the US, car accidents kill more people than guns do. I'd say that half the people on the road today have no right to be behind the wheel of a vehicle.
Wow, that was a long rant.

words out that gas is going to hit $10 bucks a gallon in 2~3 years!! Can we say Good buy to Trucks and SUV's lol . . . especially those schmucks who are solo in them and have no trailer hitch if you know what I mean. I mean really, what a waste of raw materials!!
I want a horse too.
But . . . right now I'm averaging 32mph in my Tc via very conservative driving. No not grandma driving but not racing it if you know what I mean.

I will happilly drive my SUV and p!$$ off anyone whining about it. If they dont like it, they can drive thier little car under my front bumper and I will use them as a speed bump
Seriously, I see the complaint against the morons who dont know how to drive them or have no purpose for them. But we use the crap out of our 4Runner and I will happilly keep it. There are too many people who think they are high and mighty and saving the world driving thier little cars (and yes, I have a tC and a Saturn, so I have small and larger cars). But if you feel that way in your tC.. forget it. You are driving a small car that gets worse mileage than most cars its size. If you really cared about the environment you would be driving a deisel compact with 100 hp. So we all made a choice of what we wanted over the environment, just like we do every time we decide to take an un-necessary road trip. And if you are slapping a turbo on that compact, you can really stop talking about the SUV drivers. Just because you choose to do "less" un-necessary fuel burning does not make you any better.
And if you really believe that demand (aka, them making MORE money) is the real reason prices go up.. then you are kidding yourself. They are gouging on the prices just like they always have. I have been doing more an more led swaps lately, mainly due to tax season. This means I buy more stuff in bulk and make more money in a given timeframe.. so maybe I should follow suit and raise my prices!!!!!
I realize there is more going into the oil thing.. but the oil companies have shown in the past that when they made record profits, they claimed demand made them raise the prices the following year. Its all a big bunch of crap really. And as long as we keep buying into solutions that still polute almost equally , raise the prices on all our food and do little good in the end (ethanol) and hybrids which require on more highly toxic battery plants, yeild similar numbers to any decent new diesel engine and cost way too much, rather than putting money into better energy solutions (like fuel cells and giving breaks to companies who have programs for people to work from home.. both of these are MUCH more intelligent options) we will keep going down this road and the fake greenies will enjoy thier little stickers on thier bumper against the SUV;s... cause they are SAVING THE WORLD
You notice I laugh.... not because it isnt serious, but because that is all you can do at the worlds stupidity around all of this.
I say f#@$ it... buy a horse and ride it down main street! :D

LOL @ the riding horse idea. I like horses but the idea doesn't sound very cost effective. The gas prices haven't really effected me yet financially but I've cut back in purchasing items I want (things I don't really need).

You dont buy a motorcycle to save gas
If you buy a bike that costs you $10,000 (which you wont find a new harley that cheap), and it gets 50 mpg... and lets say you get 25mpg in the tC.... in 12 years you will save enough in gas to make up the price of the bike.. and that is if you pay CASH for the bike and dont have to pay interest, and is leaving out the cost of gas.. .and assuming you drive 12,000 miles a year and switchto riding the bike only.. no car.. even in the crappy weather. In other words, you will never save a dime.. it will cost you money.
You buy a motorcylce because it is fun.

With our current state of recession, a horse would ultimately cost more than driving a tC. Get a bike if you want better gas milage, like everyone else has suggested.
