i just took a look inside my car and it looks like the ebrake wouldn't be very accessible with it. the ebrake is back kind of far. i don't think it would work out very good on manual cars because we have to use that ebrake. hopefully it works though, can't wait to find out.

the quality is pretty good, but the material is like a fake leather. It looks ok, but not an exact match. Im going to try to make a template for the brackets tonight. The brackets will either be made from polished diamond plate or tubing, I havent decided yet. I think diamond plate might look pretty sick.

I got so frustrated everyone was saying they may have found one, try this and so on so i said "Screw it" I could build one. I went to a junk yard and found that the arm rest from the ford taurus is the perfect fit for the xA. All i needed to do was modify the bracket. All the photos are over on the yahoo group in the file section. Tell me what you all think. Honestly it wasnt that hard. I went to a local metal shop and had him do a few welds for me. The final cost was $50.00 for the metal work and $3.00 for the arm rest.

drandolph
01-29-2004, 06:04 PM
I went to pickapart junk yard theres a bunch of then in cali. The place was lined with taurus's all over the place. Theres only 3 screws that hold it down and its really easy to get to so you can rip one out like that. Get new fabric applied, i was lucky i found one that had fabric that matched mine.

I have no idea why there are so many ford taurus cars in the junk yard ;)

I would love to figure out how to do the same thing for an xB (theres more room between the seat and i would like to know what would fit) So if you live in SD and want to do the same thing to you xB let me know. You buy the parts, pay the machine shop for welding and everything i do is free. I would like the challenge.

drandolph

Now all i need is some Scion repair tech to find an extra roll of fabric so it does match the interior. Any leads would be great. Oh i should mention that i can still shift and use the parking brake and I can still up the little change holder too! I'm happy with this mod but i want to take it back out and raise it a bit.

Without sounding like a sales man.
His name is Jorge Ibarra
he is in san diego and his number is 858-578-0086.
He works at J&E welding
If you bring in your Scion and the arm rest piece(including the factory mount part) he will do it right there it only takes about an hour to do it.

Just make sure you let me know because his rate is $60.00 an hour and it took me and him about 3 hours to figure out the best way to do it. I went thru 3 different design ideas and this is the one that worked the best. If you let me know you can have my design and save all that time. He told me if anyone else wanted the same thing he could use mine as the template and get it done really quick.

I got my arm rest from a ford taurus circa 1987-93 i found at a junk yard for 3 bucks.

I tell you what. I plan on taking it out monday or tuesday night and i will do up good drawings for you. The orginal drawings were way off by the end and we were making it up as we went along. To give you an idea of how far off from the orginal idea i was the bar was suppost to be a straight bar that ran straight up. The offset (curve) on it is because without it it would hit the shifter and i kinda would like to be able to put it into drive. and i didnt want to mount it further back because i wanted it to go under the center console. The reason im taking it out is because i want to raise it up about 3 more inches if you look at the picture its kinda riding low in the seat.

Also look early in this thread as there are photos there if you did not see them yet.

Werd...

You think when i get the numbers together they will want to put it in the tech section?

The drawing is with it raised 3" like i was talking about earlier.
You may or may not see the image if you dont see it go to yahoo groups scion and find it in the files section.

As a side note I put a little disclaimer at the bottom of the image because i dont want anyone selling it. Any one can make it all day long but i just dont want some manafactuer picking it up and building it and make money. I only put the image up for others to make one not for some jerk to make a profit!

It may not be the best arm rest out there but you have to admit it looks stock? I want the storage to, so if anyone has a good idea on how to make it, im all ears. Also if anyone wants to check it out and see it in person I'm going to the El Toro event this weekend. come on by.

Dr...you did an great job, I don't mean to take anything away from that most excellent mod and yes, it does look stock! ...

I wonder, maybe Randode will have a surprises for us all at Exposed if he is coming...It would be a great place to unveil yet another armrest mod.

No i didnt take offense at all its just the first one posted in this thread i didnt like the mount so my dream is to take that arm and put it on my mount. Dont worry about it. I want to see how other people are dealing with the problem to. But come on dont i get to claim to title of the first person to put a center arm rest in a scion xA? (shameless plug for attention :) )

I am a long time member of echofans.net. I found these two sites for armrest.

http://woodcompanyusa.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=1093

http://www.husco.com/cgi-bin/ePages4.filereader?3fd556ee00286f5c0000c0a8013a05d5+EN/products/125682&2D1012595

These companies make these for the echo. They might be willing to make one for the xA and xB or these might fit. :D :D

what i find hard to believe is that there is not an aftermarket armrest available by now.....

someone with a good design could make some $$ pretty easily....

Damn... Back on the 13th Randode said he would be getting it Fed-Exed within 3 days.

I wonder what the result was... :?

Ah, I understand now! It worked and you're hogging the wealth!

Grrr... He just wants to be the only xB with a somewhat fashionable armrest.

jk, but I'd still like to know if the armrest worked out.

Bump! A nice arm rest would really make my ride 10X more comfortable.

What are you guys using?

There are three or four armrests out there for the xB right now. JJ products, Zeta etc.. They have all gotten good reviews. I have the JJ Products one and love it. The JC Whitney one does not work well. I got it around five months ago to play around with it and it would need some major modifications just to get it to fit and even then the emergency brake would be a real pain in the ___. I could be wrong, but I think folks have abandoned this one as a cost effective alternative.

damn minsk, you're promoting that thing like crazy, haha  must really like that JJ armrest.

FYI: there are 5 armrests out there. (this jc whitney one doesn't count unless randy makes something out of it  )
Zeta, JJ Products, Wood Company (QualityAutoInteriors), eBay (1/2" plastic drop in), and mine. There were about 3-4 companies that tried and gave up on it. Zeta and Wood Company are vinyl/pleather trimmed, dunno if it matches well since there's no leather in these. The JJ products one looks the cleanest if you don't mind cutting your seats and don't mind not having storage. The eBay one and mine are "homemade" ones. eBay uses 1/2" abs plastic welded together and has a small storage unit w/ padded top. Not very clean looking, but I give the guy props, he was the first one with an armrest out. :D
