Sonar Headlights do not work with H4 HID Bulbs
I hope to save someone some cash and a ton of cursing, The Sonar headlights (ones with adjustment) DO NOT WORK WITH HID BULBS!!!! I know they say this on the side of the housing but i was thinking come on there only going to be brighter right? Wrong! The only thing I can think of is the projector lenses filter out that spectrum of light, but they do not work. After the installation of the headlights I waited for it to get dark to aim/test. as soon as i pulled out of driveway I realized i cannot see a damn thing! after numerous hours, cursing and re-checking everything, i finally decided to put a normal 9006 bulb in and what do you know, it was perfect. since i had the HID's way before i got these lights i wasn't as bummed as i would have been if i just purchased them. other than that the lights look amazing and are a huge improvement on the stockers.
It looks like the wife's car is about to get a set of HID's installed ;-)

I have mine in a set of sonar headlights and they work fine did the lights not light up at all??? Check this thread I have before and after pics. lots of people are running hids in sonar and other projectors.
Your not supposed to run them in projectors because of the huge amp draw at start up can fry your stock wiring harness but with a relay switch you power them straight from the battery using a relay to have the stock wiring act as a switch only keeping them safe.
if you need help there is a basic hook up diagram in that thread also just a few pages back or forward.

Well they work great in my stock headlights, when i put them in the projectors it is only shining directly down and there is no beam. What bulb are you guys using? (HID one) I have a set of H3's i believe, so with the 9006 the beam is perfectly aligned and works good. put in the HID's and no beam, only small amount of light shining down in a half circle or quarter moon shape. It makes no sense to me except maybe it is blocking that spectrum of light. just so you know i am not a first timer on car repair or mods I have done everything from electronic boost controllers, engine swaps to complete stand alone ECU's (used to race imports). Maybe you guys are using different bulbs or color ranges? i dont know it doesnt make any sense to me. but there has to be a reason it says on the housing HID's dont work... any ideas?

I don't know if it is the same issue as the anzo headlights but you are supposed to switch the polarity by changing the wires for the harness that comes with the new headlights when wiring in the HIDs.
Not sure if that is the same with the sonars or not but might help considering that you don't need a harness with stock headlights.

yeah im sure the problem is using the h4's... bangs head against desk
i am assuming they dont go into the projector housing far enough to reflect the correct amount of light. do all HID's use the same connectors? I should be able to just buy two new 9006 HID bulbs and use the ballasts i already have correct?

Yea, that's like saying when I put brake lights in my headlight, it doesn't produce enough light...
Use the right bulb for the right application. Bulbs shouldn't run you a whole lot (definitely < $100)

i have a pair of sonar hid lights in my 02 jetta. and they are equipped ( and came with ) h1 bulbs, so if i want to go HID, do i need to buy the h1 hid bulb? and how do i go about installing it since the back of the sonar headlights u have to take the entire back off. and should i get a relay switch? thanks. i have been trying to find out for a long time and stumbled apon this website. so it would be great if i could know. this is what they look like...

I don't have Sonar's, but a similar projector headlight that takes 9006's. So when i buy my HID kit, do I just get one for a 9006? And do they just plug into the socket that goes to the bulb? Or do I have to undo the harness that came with the projectors and hook the HID harness up to the factory light plugs? I've searched and searched, but haven't really found a solid answer, and i want to buy the right kit the first time. Thanks.
