Default rims size fitment

Whenever I get new rims I think I'll be staying at 17" diameter. Can I buy wider rims than the stock still? Like 8, 0r 8.5"? Current tire is 215 45 17. I have problems with my inner fender well (driver side only) being closer to my tire because of the CAI filter placement which is why I kind of want to keep 17" rims. If I did upgrade to 18's, what size tire would I have to use? Since it would have to have a thinner sidewall to compensate for the larger diameter rim.

You can run a 17x8 ET 35 for a flush look or 17x8 ET 48 and run like a 245 series tire, but the wheel will be super tucked in. As far as the CAI is concerned, I have the INjen intake with 18x7.5 ET 35 and 225/40R18 and the intake has nothing to do with the clearance.
