Does a metal one serve an advantage over a plastic one or something? kacosta 12-02-2004, 05:13 PM the echo one might be metal there are no echos in my shop to compare to if i find one i will post dont stress over the crappy plastic stick hey our intake manifolds are plastic too but on an intake that is an accepted practice i agree the dipstick is kinda cheesey SWF_05_tC 12-02-2004, 05:23 PM why did you post this 4 times? Because the server got lagged up and made an error. It happens frequently. Joehnn 12-02-2004, 05:28 PM why did you post this 4 times? Because the server got lagged up and made an error. It happens frequently. Right. I alerted the moderators to this and told them to delete the other 3. I deleted extras. Joehnn 12-02-2004, 05:30 PM What's wrong with it? I mean, it's just a dipstick right? Does a metal one serve an advantage over a plastic one or something? I have a fear (possibly unfounded) that a few years down the road it may break. Now wouldn't that be a mess. :? Scott17 12-02-2004, 06:27 PM No, not really. kacosta 12-02-2004, 06:28 PM the new plastics are amazeing dont worry jdaniels 12-04-2004, 05:07 PM Anyone replace the cheapa$$ plastic dipstick in their xB yet? The color helps the eyes focus on the oil level a little better than the metal counterparts. Joehnn 12-04-2004, 06:49 PM Anyone replace the cheapa$$ plastic dipstick in their xB yet? The color helps the eyes focus on the oil level a little better than the metal counterparts. That is a good point. boilerman 12-04-2004, 07:07 PM Not for my old eyes. I changed the oil and could only really detect the level of the new oil by touch. nest 12-05-2004, 12:57 AM What's wrong with it? I mean, it's just a dipstick right? Does a metal one serve an advantage over a plastic one or something? I agree. What advantage could there be to a metal one. It's not as if the usual strip of tin is some kind of expensive status symbol or even a sign of quality. The bright yellow plastic one works just fine for me. :? chadfo 12-05-2004, 01:42 AM I think it's easier to read the against the yellow. My only reservation is the quality and that's only because I had a bad experience with a yellow plastic handle on the dipstick in my wife's car. The handle was yellow plastic and the blade was metal. One day after owning the car for about 3 years or so I attempted to check the oil and ended up with just a handle in my hand and a disptick stuck in it's shaft. I did manage to get it out by drilling into it and wedging something in the hole to pry it out. The dealer was shocked I retrieved it. He said most people have to replace the entire assemply. Enough ranting. I just hope the plastic is better quality. It is Toyota so I'm sure it is. nest 12-05-2004, 02:12 AM The Toyota one is a one piece design too, as I remember and the plastic is pretty pliable. I suspect it will last as long or longer than the rest of the car. I can't really see being too concerned about this.
