View Full Version : Scions share wheel fitments with Miatas

Just an interesting note, that the Scions seem to be able to take the EXACT same wheel fitments (in terms of bolt pattern and widths and offsets) as the NB (later-model) Miatas. This includes the fact that the rears can take a wider, and lower-offset rear wheel.

You can see the amount of flushness between the wheel and fender on this Miata is about on par with the Scions... actually, the Scion rear should have just about 1-2mm MORE room on the outside!!

I was talking to a friend last night telling him which wheels I was getting and he remarked that the fitment was the same as his Miata.
That means for this car the proper wheels are easy to find, unlike my Subaru :?

with a stretched tire is there n-e propblem u may have that u could not have with a normal fitting tire?

There are a lot of potential problems... there is always the possibility of the wheel getting messed up if curbed and such. Also if there is no bead the tire may simply come off... in the depicted case it maybe VERY possible. A lot of people like myself use stretch tire to achieve fitment goals and performance/driving characteristics. Stretched tire setups will ultimately allow you to stiffen up your sidewall so there is now give... good for sliding :D It also allows you to fit oversized wheels with low offset when you can't squeeze anymore camber or fitment mods to get your desired performance... so many things... but basically that's it.

is the miata driveable without any rubbing like that?

Stretched tire setups seem to be able to give you a bit more traction than a similarly-sized, non-stretched tire setup. You will be able to take corners at a little bit higher limit (thanks also to the stiffer sidewall when you stretch the tire), and it's a little more fogiving at the limit; in my experience, a stretched tire setup sort of gives me a greater margin of error before totally losing traction over a same size tire that isn't stretched, on a narrower rim. It's a little hard to explain, but you do seem to gain a little more confidence with a stretched setup. Of course, the downside is that you do feel the road a bit more, and you need to be more aware of the road. And you especially have to be careful when parallel parking. Like you guys said, it's a curb rash waiting to happen, especially if you've been working on a car for 6 hours straight in the cold and then go to parallel park your car for the night...trust me on that one! =X

EDIT: Whoops, and to answer your Q, Ikon: The car is drivable, but not ideal. That was a test fit session to see what exactly would need to be done. What I discovered is that ideally, I'd need to roll the rear fender, and camber the fronts about another 1 deg, and the rear about another 1.5 deg to get it to be perfect. I did drive it like that though for kicks... Oh yah, and those wheels did originally come off a JDM bB!

why is it cool to have a tire that is too small for your wheel?

that is dumb.

no.

you want the sidewall to be flat. stretching it away from flat either from too big or too small a wheel will reduce the contact patch and offer less grap.

look at successful race cars. If wheel widths are not limited by the rules, you will see a flat sidewall. If wheel widths ARE limited, you often seem people stuffing as huge a tire as they can squeeze on the rim, even if it bulges a little.

exactly..when was the last time you saw ANY performance car or race car that had tires stretched onto too wide a rim........to the point that the bead was about to pop off?
