I plan on running a WIX, and was wondering if there are any larger filters that are compatible. The stock filter is a tiny little thing, I'd prefer to run a larger (longer) filter for the additional filtration media.

Alright, did a little research myself, it seems there are two oil filters out there, a Japanese Spec (JDM Filters? :D) filter, the one that comes with the vehicle Toyota P/N 90915-10004 or 90915-YZZA1 or Wix P/N 51396. *Note, further research has lead me to believe that the 10004 filters is superior to the YZZA1, due to internal construction, despite being the same size. See note 1&2 below* The 10004 is supposed to be better constructed. The Wix version is 3.402 inches long. To make things more confusing, the 90915-YZZA1 has been renamed to 90915-YZZF1, apparently.

There is also the US spec filter, that the dealers will try to sell you, Toyota P/N 90915-YZZA2, or Wix P/N 51394. The Wix version is listed as 2.977 inches long. As you can see, there is almost a half inch difference in length, which should in theory give more filtration area. The two Wix filters are listed as identical, except for their length, as far as oil flow and burst strength and all those other good number are concerned.

Also available, for those with money to burn, is the TRD Japan filter, which breaks the bank at over $25 a filter. (See note 5) Note that it comes in tasty TRD red, which is probably why they want so much for it.

My sugguestion: Go with the 90915-10004 filter, if you can get your parts department to order it, (Or online, see note 4) possibly better yet cross reference it with a Wix (Also sold as NAPA Gold) or Purolator filter, both of which companies make excellent filters. There are also several other aftermarket companies making oil filters for our engines. If you decide to go with one of their filters, I would cross reference it to the 90915-10004 filter.

I buy a cheapo Fram from Wally World. I hear all the time that they stink but I have never kept a car more than three or four years anyways and I have NEVER heard of ANYONE blowing up an engine becuase they used a Fram filter.

I am using the Purolator PureOne filter #PL14477. After spending about 4 hours reading oil filter reviews and testings I decided that the PureOne was the best oil filter at the best price. Because I am changing my oil at 5,000 miles using a filter that does a better job of filtering seems to make since. Cleaner oil = a cleaner engine and because I usually keep a car until the wheels fall off I figure it's worth it. I bought 26 of them for $76.44 shipped. That comes out to $2.94 each. I just did a Google search for the filter and found a deal on the two pack through Amazon.com. If you are not familiar with this filter check out this link.

I think in all of the oil filter tests I have read the Fram oil filters did not get very good recommendations. I use to run only Fram but after reading the reviews and test comparisons I switched. It seems that before Allied Signal bought them out the filters were suppose to have been much better but I don't know that anyone ever really compared the old Fram filters to the new Fram filters. Don't be afraid of reading the reviews and comparisons and then decide for yourselves. Just because you have used a particular oil, oil filter, air filter, or gasoline for years and never had a problem does not mean you are using a superior product. Things do change over the years. You can teach an old dog new tricks, if he will listen.

Just did an oil change with Mobil 1 0W-20 and the Mobil 1 M1-103 filter. I got 5 quarts + the filter at Kragen this morning for $19.99 (after $15 mail in rebate). Seems like a very good deal to me. We'll see if I get that extra 2% in MPG...

Rockthebeef, if I am not mistaken the 2008 xB's come with synthetic oil from the factory. It will also take some time for the engine to break in so your mileage should improve slowly as time goes by.

Thansk Al. I wasn't aware of that the car may have come with synthetic. I would bet the factory uses 5W-20, but I really don't know. I had my 5k done at the dealer and they put in 10W-30. I'm not sure if they used synthetic though. I did my 10k this morning so I think my engine's broken in by now. I was getting about 23mpg mixed before 5k, then I was getting 24-25mpg mixed. I get 30mpg on the freeway so I'm happy with what I'm getting. The 0W-20 might even make it better, but I'm not really counting on it.
