JDM rear fog light?
Did anything like this exist for the bB? I'd love to have one, or see what people have done with the DIY route.
In case you're not familiar with a rear fog lamp, most European and JDM cars have them. It's a single light on the back of the car, usually offset from center, and it stays lit up with the intensity of a brake light when you turn it on. I think most BMWs have them, because I remember it on my friend's 3-series.

I was looking for one of these, too.
Way back when, Hella used to sell one that bolted to the underside of your bumper, and was about 2" x 3"(?) or so. I had one on my '83 GTI. I thought it would fit nicely in that little pop out panel in the xB's rear bumper, but couldn't find any aftermarket pieces like that available any more.

I have been wanting to do this to. but I think you will need to remove the bumper that is behind the rear lip peice.

I think rear fogs are cool and everything, but they also are a hassle. I used to have one on a GTI some years back.
They have their place in the Euro world, but they really are useless here in the USA. We rarely have fog dense enough to warrant their use. That the first problem.
The second problem is they are very annowing to the person driving right behind you. Every driven behind a left foot driver with their foot on the brake all the time ? Those rear fogs are bright.
Third problem is the cops love them. It give them a great excuse to pull you over.
"Sir, I noticed your brake light was stuck on. I just thought I'd pull you over and tell you."
"Sir, have you been drinking?"
"Sir, please step out of the car and touch your nose."
That actually happened to 2 people I knew. I disconnected mine in GTI.

The rear fog looks tacky on an xB. Who want a big red light in the middle of their bumper. Who cares about the person driving behind you. My brother has a rear fog on his beetle and the cops dont even look twice at him.

Very cool!
A. Unfortunately - on Left Hand Drive cars, it should be mounted on the left side of the rear bumper! (So as you move slowly along a fog-shrouded road, drivers behind you can see it and pass you on the left , as is proper - if they're feeling suicidal about speed, that is...) I'm guessing the shown samples were guys who wanted to look, uh... JDM (and get creamed in bad fog...).
B. To the poster above who mentioned that they're not needed in the U.S. for fog has obviously never been to Huntington Beach, CA!
C. To the guy who said, "Who cares about the person driving behind you". Wellll...you might if a semi slams into you from behind in dense fog!

I hate to revive old threads [not really], but I started thinking I could do this rear fog light idea in the little plate that covers the tow hook hole. I know you can find small, bright clusters of red LEDs that would fit nicely in that spot.
Anybody tried it?
