View Full Version : New to modding and want the 'deep' noise.
nherweck 05-31-2008, 09:32 AM OK, no laughing at me! The other day I was parked next to another xB and when he accelerated, his box seemed as if it was screaming at me, hah. It had a very loud deep noise. It made his box seem as if it was more powerful. What can I do for this? I'd like the same noise, but I'm not exactly Mr. Moneybags, nor do I have the greatest auto skills.
Also, a while back I used a windex wipe on my Speedo, and ever since, the plastic is all foggy. Not on the backside (like moisture trapped), but on the outside, where I actually wiped. Where can I get a replacement shield (if that's what you can call it) and what exactly is it called?
Thanks!
bbszero 05-31-2008, 12:21 PM You can pick up an axle-back exhaust anywhere from 100.00 to 500.00, depending on the brand. I'd steer clear of the ebay cheapies though, and go with a decent brand. An intake and header even adds to the aggressive sound.
Try cleaning your speedo cover with some rubbing alcohol, i don't see how windex would destroy it. Probably would be a dealer only replacement, but I tried to buy just a needle, and they said i'd have to buy the whole assembly, for over 400.00! Or pound the pavement and hit up wrecking yards till you find one. I've never seen one on ebay. Good luck.
BoxOffice 05-31-2008, 03:10 PM You'd be surprised at what just removing your airbox snorkle, and getting a K&N replacement filter and Valor exhaust tip will do to your exhaust tone! Cheap and easy mods that actually help performance and MPG a little, and sound great! You could do all of this for about $100, and it takes maybe 1/2 hour!
nherweck 06-03-2008, 04:38 AM BoxOffice - I have already removed the snorkle, that was a piece of cake. Now about the K&N replacement filter...what exactly is it and where would I get one? The exhaust tip I'm sure I can get ahold of....eBay does wonders for that stuff.
bbszero69 - axle-back exhaust system? Would I contact just a local AutoZone for something like that? Or would I need to find an authorized dealer? Intake & Header--are those things I could work on myself with minimal automotive knowledge or even with a friend with adequate auto skills?
I'll definitely try the rubbing alcohol, because the $400 is not anything I want to spend on it, hah. If it doesn't work, I'll deal with a foggy surface!
burstaneurysm 06-03-2008, 04:48 AM I have the Precision Muffler axleback, it sounds glorious. Very deep, nice and aggressive. It's pretty much your best bet.

nherweck 06-03-2008, 04:50 AM burstaneurysm - Do you mind telling me how much that ran you at?
burstaneurysm 06-03-2008, 04:52 AM I actually got mine used off ebay for $60.
You can get them at the above site for $260 (good price for a bolt-on)
nherweck 06-03-2008, 04:55 AM Wow, you got a heck-of-a savings! But thanks! I checked it out and that's EXACTLY the sound I'm going for.
Thanks!
burstaneurysm 06-03-2008, 05:47 AM It sounds even lower in person, also when it's in gear. It's a really nice piece.
nherweck 06-03-2008, 05:55 AM What kind of installation is this? Is it something I could do with my minimal skills? Also, what kind of tools would be needed? Basics from any home garage?
Thanks again!
greybox 06-03-2008, 06:03 AM I bet that film/fog on the speedo is because something came off of what you were wiping it with-grease or something maybe.
Right now on craigslist up here somebpdy is selling a brand new TRD axle back for $200-keep an eye on craigslist where you live too-you might get lucky. Maybe even a front impact xB that somebody had a nice exhaust on that they are parting out.
nherweck 06-03-2008, 06:07 AM greybox-Thanks for the tip! I'm always checking CL for anything I need, never thought of it for this though. Thanks!
nherweck 06-03-2008, 07:11 AM Is this the K&N Air filter that everyone talks about? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/K-N-Air-Filter-Scion-xB-06-05-04-1-5L-Cylinder-GAS-MFI_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33659QQihZ015QQitemZ250254909854QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
Is this a good price?
THANKS!
bB2NER 06-03-2008, 12:52 PM Here is the best price ($44.12 W/ free shipping) I could find on that part number.

burstaneurysm 06-03-2008, 02:43 PM An exhaust install is a pain the first time you do it.
It's really only one bolt (at the bracket) but you'll wrestle with the first hanger until you figure out what you're doing. You need to lube up the hangers, especially to pull the stock one out.
Also, be aware that the Precision one has the worlds most annoying hangers. They are U shaped, rather than L shaped, so there's a lot of twisting to put it on, but it's crazy secure once it is on.
bB2NER 06-03-2008, 03:02 PM Also, remember to buy a new gasket from the dealer for where the system joins the stock exhaust.
mrfuzzy4 06-03-2008, 04:01 PM so if one was to look for this and pick it up, he would need to get what extra parts?
bB2NER 06-03-2008, 04:05 PM I'd just get the new gasket cause chances are the original one will come un coiled while swapping the new exhaust.
Mosh_xB 06-03-2008, 04:06 PM i had the borla axle back on my gen1...loved the tone!
bB2NER 06-03-2008, 04:41 PM I have the Strup V2.0 with a silencer and love the deep rich tone.
FlakoFigZ 06-03-2008, 05:31 PM cool stuff "spontaneousaneurysm"! How does the PM axleback compare to the cheaper "Tsudo" fireball and N1's?
burstaneurysm 06-03-2008, 05:45 PM I'd just get the new gasket cause chances are the original one will come un coiled while swapping the new exhaust. It might not though. I've had two exhausts so far and I haven't had problem with the gasket integrity at all.
vettereddie 06-03-2008, 06:21 PM You can try a custom cat-back system. I needed ground clearance and could not fit an axle-back muffler in, so went with a Flowmaster Hushpower mounted in the stock resonator location. I had to put a silencer on the exhaust tip it was so loud, though it was not raspy or lawn-mowerish like some fart can mufflers. Entire system ran around $500, installed by a local shop (avoid the chain ones like Minekee, and try to find one with custom pipe experience).
As for your speedo, try invisible glass, it's ammonia free and safe for tint and plastic. I also use it on my interior panels and rims, it's great stuff and streak free. Autozone, Advanced Auto and maybe even Walmart have it. I like the aresol one best.

bB2NER 06-04-2008, 01:42 AM I'd just get the new gasket cause chances are the original one will come un coiled while swapping the new exhaust. It might not though. I've had two exhausts so far and I haven't had problem with the gasket integrity at all.Mine was fine for the first swap. It would just suck for him if he had to wait a day or two to drive the car because he didn't have one if needed is all I was sayin. I too hope he doesn't need a new one tho.
Sciond 06-04-2008, 02:40 AM I have the Precision Muffler axleback, it sounds glorious. Very deep, nice and aggressive. It's pretty much your best bet.

I love mine
or get a whistle tip
nherweck 06-04-2008, 04:15 AM Is the JDM RS-R AXLE BACK EXHAUST better than the PrecisionMuffler.com axle back that I was referred to? I can get the JDM model a bit cheaper brand new from a friend of mine.
Thanks!
Sciond 06-04-2008, 04:30 AM a matter of opinion...I can I have 80.000 miles on mine no rub no problems sounds great
nherweck 06-04-2008, 01:47 PM So...what is the major difference between the $100-150 eBay axleback exhausts and the precisionmuffler exhaust?
Besides the $140-190 difference in cost?
The reason I'm asking is that this kit: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/04-05-06-Scion-xB-Cold-Air-Intake-EVO2-Exhaust-Axleback_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ38634QQihZ011QQitemZ320257009050QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW is about $100 cheaper, and it has the cold air intake, which I wanted to get as well.
Thanks everyone for your help!!!!
burstaneurysm 06-04-2008, 03:43 PM Quality. That's the difference.
And the RS*R is very sexy.
nherweck 06-05-2008, 07:11 AM I'll be honest...I don't plan on having my xB for more than another 2 years. I want it to be a fun car for the time being. Is it worth spending the almost $200 more for the precision muffler?

I originally wanted a Precision muffler but same as you, I'm new to modding and on a very tight budget. I settled for a Tsudo fireball and it's not bad. Very low and throaty sound. Installation was straight forward and the hangers weren't terribly difficult. Just requires a little persuasion. I think I used a little soap or something to ease it in lol...
The Tsudo was slightly off center but after about a month or two it settled center. I say if you don't have the dough to get a nice exhaust, a Tsudo is a cheap and 'decent' alternative.
nherweck 06-08-2008, 12:40 AM how - Thanks! I just ordered the Tsudo Fireball Extreme for $140 brand new. That's including s/h. I was going to buy a used on that was on ebay for $145 until I found the new one online. Awesome!
Thanks for your input!
Now to everyone else--about the new gasket? What is it and where i can I get one? Can I go to my dealer and get it? Or will I have to order it online? I'm looking to order it immediately if I have to order it as I'll be installing next weekend when I get the exhaust!
Thanks!
nherweck 06-08-2008, 12:57 AM OH! And I just ordered the K&N Air Filter from the site that bB2NER referred me to. Thanks again!
VIP_CAMO 06-08-2008, 04:43 AM bump for the strup axle back i got v.1 and its f'n sweet has a great sound..as far as the gasket goes i give my car a spirited drive every once and a while and i have been through 3 gaskets ...in 3 years .what i did was went to i belive autozone or one of those type places because it has a warranty so id exchange it everytime and get a new one ..
BlackTop 06-09-2008, 03:40 PM SRI + Strupp axle back - silencer = deep noise
nherweck 06-10-2008, 04:43 AM Just trying this again:

Did the box that made your box feel like less of a box, look like this?
If so That we me :D
I have a ebay intake, and tsudo axle back (much like the one you talked about in this post).
Sorry to bring it back from the dead, but Cody (crxgames) just brought it to my attention.
nherweck 07-24-2008, 01:29 AM Stenger - Yes....you're the one. LOL. Which ebay intake do you have? CAI? SRI? I looked at a few on there, but I don't think I'd be able to install. The engine compartment on the box is TINY! I had a Crown Vic PI that I was always able to tweak with, but the engine compartment was almost 3 times the size, haha.
But again, you're box made my box shiver :P
stenger 07-24-2008, 02:47 AM mine is a short ram, which does not follow the roller coaster stock plumbing. It goes straight, and filter tucks in behind the headlight.
When you order it, let me know and I'll give you a hand on the install.
Also, did you end up getting your exhaust?
stenger 07-24-2008, 02:49 AM Oh, btw. Sign up and get your application and payment in for Scion Evolution Ky. The forum for the Ky chapter is now up :D
nherweck 07-24-2008, 03:21 AM Awesome--I'll definitely let you know. Thanks!
I got the Tsudo exhaust. It's amazing...
I'm working on the app now, and I'll be sendign that and the payment on 8/1 when I get paid next, lol.
Do you know how many members are in the KY chapter?

As of now officially just me. But Cody (crxgames) and you would make 3. Then we just need to do some recrutting.
nherweck 07-25-2008, 03:59 AM Awesome. I'm all in for it.
