Default Crazy idea of the day....

on my way to work i was bored and thinking about mods.......one of which was, a xB2 engine, automanual transmission, and interior installed on an xB1......i know it would be alot of work, but it would be wicked cool

There have been a lot of engine swaps done. Cost is about 10k or more. The tC/xB2 engine is a lot bigger than the xB1 engine as well. Plus it is not exactly legal to do engine swaps.

People are fine as long as the WSP doesn't pull them over... and pop the hood.

i was under the impression if you did an engine swap you could take your car down to the DMV for a safty inspection and you could get a "custom" title for it, as long as the numbers on the parts dont come back stolen

If you can get it through emissions you are good to go............that is the trick.........you have to rob the motor and computer form the donor car so it all works........remember the car does not know what is in it..........nor does the motor know what car it is in..........but the emission values are always attached to the car...........

for instance the 1980 Grand Prix I had...........dropped a 455 out of a donor GTO..........problem was every time emissions came around I had to go put a Cat onthe exhaust to pass...........then cut it back off after so the car ran properly..........drove me nuts.........so I sold the car for $50..............yes $50.........ran and drove fine........soem guy in Graham owns it now.........think he used allthe motor and stuf to build his Firebird.......and dumped its motor and stuff into the GP and sold it.........LOL

Every state handles it differently. Some states allow you to drive a deathtrap will all the safety and emissions equipment removed (I'm looking at you, Gothbox and your lack of airbags).

I know in New York, engine swaps are ok if the engine is at least as new as the car and has all of its functioning emissions equipment and OBD2 bits. I think the same applies in California, but they make you jump through all sorts of stupid hoops to make it as much of a hassle as possible. Offhand, I think CA followed by NY are the most strict.

However, I do know that NY doesn't test actual tailpipe emissions. If you aren't throwing a CEL (on and OBD2 car-- I used to have an OBD1 GMC that had an EGR CEL for years), you generally don't have a problem, though NYC may be different.

As always, YMMV, and check your local laws (as convoluted a process as doing so may be).

ha ha, having no airbags is actually a federal law, not state to state.
but it just happens that all the cops etc, don't care down here. and that and we have a state inspection here in MS, but all they check (some places more then others) are lights front and back, blinkers, horn, and thats about it.
we don't have any emissions test down here either. and I don't run a cat on gothbox too.

being a mechanic in the greater state of NY, yeah they due stick a sensor in the tailpipes but only if it is an OBD1 vehicle. obd2 they hookup to your OBD2 port and turn the car on and in about 2 minutes the inspection is over. but yeah as for the DMV and swaps from what i know as long as you have the comp with the motor you are good to go.

I would even worry about passing inspection... I'd worry about the hassle and pain of actually making it happen.

Several people have tried, and most of em failed.

Yea, an engine swap might be interesting, but why not just go forced induction. You can replace engine internals too and have a viable, reliable car that pulls really hard.

Think about it, would you rather have a built 1-NZ or a stock 2AZ?

Even if you did manage to shoehorn a 2AZ in there, any performance mods would need to be custom as well.

I dunno, personally, the headache that would cause me is not at all worth the finished product, even assuming you can get in and working.

@burstaneurysm: That's a good point-- it's just as expensive and time consuming to build up an engine as it is to do a swap that would involve as much fabrication and frustration as a 2AZ swap. If a one-off engine swap still isn't a bad idea, why not go for a more interesting engine, like the SBC-powered xB that we already know of?

considering i've heard of a few 2AZ swaps into the xB now, a 3SGTE swap would be comparatively easier considering the 2AZ is bigger in actual physical size.

plus, there is ALOT of potential useable room inside the enginebay. some simple modding to the cosmetic bumper and the radiator support for the radiator and AC cooler can free up about 5 inches of fire wall to nose end room. also, you'd have to make your own tube frame to replace the subframe supports in order to do it, but all in all it's alot easier then it sounds.
