2009 5-door Yaris? Authentication required. Thoughts.
So I'm a new member and up until today I was sure that I was going to get a 2009 xD. The xD has everything I need, I like the style of the car, good gas mileage, 5 door, navigation, etc.
BUT!
I just read today that they are bringing the Yaris 5-door hatchback to the US in 2009?!
http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/07...to-u-s-for-09/
Which makes no sense to me because this puts this Yaris in direct competition with the xD. Why would Toyota do this?? Anyways...
This throws a monkey wrench into my planning process as the cars have similar attributes. I also like the body styles of both cars for different reasons.
So I have a few questions (the first question is for you guys who sell them or work at the dealerships)...
1. Is this for real? Yaris 5-door in the US in 2009? If so...when?
2. What are the chief differences between the two cars in your opinion?
3. Why should I stick with the xD? Pros and Cons?
Thoughts anyone?

I've heard the rumor too... my first thought is... will the 2009 Yaris have cruise control as an option? Its standard on the xD and was not even offered as an option for the 08 Yaris in any incantation (you'd have to go after market). That's a deal breaker for me.

Found the same info here... cruise control will be an available option... the plot thickens.

Octoipeb, the chief differences between the Yaris 5-door and xD for me are:
xD has speedo, tach, fuel gauge cluster directly in front of steering wheel. I know that xB has gauges in middle of dash like the Yaris but I just don't like having to look to the right to the middle of the dashboard to check my speed. This arrangement just isn't intuitive to me.
Scion's "pure pricing" with a minimal uptick in the xD '09 price may make the xD a better value at time of purchase. Yaris may be a big seller and dealers may hold sale price up a bit higher due to the market conditions.

The chief difference is going to be options. Can't come close to outfitting a Yaris near to what the xD has as standard equipment. If you tack everything on to a Yaris in the build-it, you end up without steering wheel controls, tweeters, and Ipod/aux input and are paying about $1500 more.
Negatives on the xD are: Ugly nose (why no ist front?), no torque 2nd gear (MT), goofy sized stock tires (hard to get proper snow tires), and no factory available armrest.
Positives: Options!, larger engine (still great mileage, I average 36.5), standard split seats.
Negatives on the Yaris: Toyota optioning practices (pay through the nose to outfit), no pure price (made buying the xD a breaze), for some the center IP (personally, I like it)
Positives: More JDM parts available, smoother shifter (MT)
Would have had a 5-door Yaris RS, but for the importing issues from Canada. Am very happy with the xD though.

Originally I went to buy a Yaris (2008 sport model). Took it for a test drive but was not impressed, but I was look for good mileage and just assumed all "small" cars were going to be similar. Plus I was lookiing at the price point of the Yaris. The Fit and Scion were more money.
But I decided to just take the Scion for a drive and I couldn't not believe the difference. The XD is "fun" to drive and I bought it right then and there.
I'm not sure if the 2009 will had a different ride or feel of the road, but I think it's going to be similar to the 2008. The XD will still have the better ride in my opinion. But they are both cute cars.

They said that the new 5 door will be built on the same platform as the current 3 door Yaris, so right there I don't see how they can fit more room in that car. Also the gauges will be on the center of the dash and it will not be that fast of a car. Remember, the Yaris is meant to the be bottom Toyota which they would hope catapult you in to a larger Toyota when the time comes.
The Yaris is a very cute/nice looking car, but I like knowing I have 128hp and its large enough for my needs.

you'll also be getting a lot of the safety options standard with the xD whereas mostly expensive options on the yaris.
i'm sticking with my xD, my brother wants me to get the 5 door, but he's probably going to be trading in his 3 door for it anyways.
for the most part it should come down to your preference of looks and mpg/hp. either way ur still going to be purchasing a reliable car

Thanks so much for the convincing! I think I'm sticking with the xD.
I would still like to know the details of the release of the Yaris, maybe I'll take one for a spin at the dealership.
Now...surely Toyota will not release this particular variation on the Yaris here in the US. If they did my decision would be very hard.

no they're most likely not going to have a special edition of the yaris yet. heck we never got the vitz rs and we've had the vitz chassis in america since the echo although canada got the hatchback. a lot of it has to do with competition with their own cars as toyota has a lot of models that conflict with each other in japan and theres already too much competition in the us. the 5 door is cool but i still love the ist's/xD's uniqueness
It's likely being introduces due to the success of the 3-door hatch Yaris. It's about the same size, but with 4 doors (easier access), so it'll likely be a hit!
The xD is available with only 1 option (AT or MT). The Yaris has a few packages available (stripped down, power pkg, etc) so that's where it comes into play. Some people want a entry level version w/ hand-powered windows =P
Scion has always offered great packages at a value. Cross shopping the xD vs Corolla or even a comparable Yaris Sedan... it's a no brainer.

well... the 5 door yaris hatchback has existed for a long time.. and i really argued when they didn't bring it to the US.. and introducing the 3 door thing instead....
i was like.. "what the #$^@"... so glad it's finally coming to the states. i think it'll be quite successful... just gotta shop around still though as far as comparing one car to another.
my only question is why they even redesigned the hatchback to a 3 door in the first place...

Since the xD is really the only true Scion with JDM bloodlines in the ist, it just feels like Toyota didn't have the ***** to call the xD the new xA considering the lower sales numbers of the xA. IMO the xB compared to the new bB is a pig, and should have been dubbed with a new name. Guess the strong association with the xB moniker and the Scion brand was too strong to abandon.
Interior size isn't that much different between the xD and Yaris, but it's clear that the American interior is finished cheaper than the Canadian version to help differentiate the two brands in the states.
the 5dr yaris will have the 1.5L motor that makes around 100hp. I also think it does not come with as many standard features which is no big deal but the xD has more safety features. The Yaris crash test is not as good as the xD and some airbags are optional on it.
woww..thats a long wait for you guys over there.... this 5 door yaris was introduced here (singapore) abt 2-3 yrs ago...and sales hasnt been that good (too many other options probably)....they stopped selling it for awhile and only recently trying to sell them again....its really not a "new" car so to say... get the xD!
I thought that the rumor was that the upcoming Yaris would be the basis of the new "Cheaper-than-a-Prius" Toyota hybrid. Hmm?
If that rumor is true... it makes some sense. Honda already stated that they are working on their Fit to become the basis of their future affordably-priced hybrid.

That is not exactly right. The new 2009 fit will not be a hydrid. The next generation following (5 years later?) will have a hybrid offering. Honda is making a smaller dedicated hybrid that is a 5dr and looks a lot like the prius. This is based on the Fit platform but it is not a hybrid fit.
Toyota is spinning off their hydrids into a Prius brand (like scion and lexus). the first of the new Prius is a slightly larger replacement of the current one. The next two are smaller and larger than the current prius. I would guess a minivan for the large one and perhaps a coupe for the smaller? But anyway there is not going to be a hybrid yaris in this generation of yaris.

i just cant stand that gauges being in the middle they way they are on the yaris, other then that, its not a bad car. but if they bring it over here with the 1.8L, itll probably help us out in the aftermarket area!
