View Full Version : sound deadening to the extreme! pics inside!
gambitx78 07-21-2008, 04:59 AM ok so ive been silently reading and no one here really wants to get rid of all the road noise that the Tc makes. So I went and bought 5 gallons of second skin spectrum to paint into the wheel wells and the complete underbody. I know alot of you will probably say it looks like a pain in the ___ but its well worth the money and time spent. Just doing this was just as amazing as doing the whole car with 80mil RAAMaAT and the neoprene stuff. The car is QUIET!

here are a few pics, sorry i didnt take any of doing the underneath the car.

to clean the wheel wells all i used was DAWN and a old car wash mitt. wasnt too difficult just really messy.

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p35/mdisalle/DSCN1195.jpg
after i cleaned them up i made sure everything was dry before i applied the SPECTRUM
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p35/mdisalle/DSCN1199.jpg
all i did was put it on as thick as possible. Well it only took about an hour in the hot ___ sun to dry before you put more layers on. Second Skin told me to make sure its at least 3-4 credit cards thick! Trust me I have done this to all the wheel wells and also the bottom of the car and i still have 3 or so gallons left! I guess I will go ahead and do more layers.

BZinn1 07-21-2008, 05:27 AM It is gonna sound great inside..........used that on my old GTO.......car sounded like a new car inside and my exhaust was not deafening in the cabin after doing it.
joeya28 07-21-2008, 05:39 AM you did the whole under body?
06tCpimpn 07-21-2008, 07:00 AM kick ___...how much was the bucket?
Ace83 07-21-2008, 07:01 AM nice one, i've been wanting to do this
InfiniteVisi0n 07-21-2008, 07:26 AM cool but my cockpit is already quiet
TeeCizzle 07-21-2008, 01:20 PM Ehh......Why isn't that stuff an actual Black Color instead of Grey Color???.....looks weird as a Grey color..IMO
gambitx78 07-21-2008, 02:44 PM yes i did the entire underbelly of the car with at least 4 coats now. Also when it dries its black not grey. Plus you never see it unless you like looking at your wheel wells lol.
I bought the spectrum from a memeber on DIYMA FOR 250 SHIPPED. its normally 250 plus shipping from second skin
blazeplacid 07-21-2008, 06:49 PM second skin is probably the best stuff to use
I got regualr damplifier and man that stuff is on there
the edead i got is crap
yes I did get the new stuff that is butyl based
second skin is the only way to go if you want it done right
ack154 07-21-2008, 06:51 PM Seems cool, but how much weight did you just add to your car?
gambitx78 07-21-2008, 07:31 PM yes i do agree the second skin products are the way to go with anything to do with sound deadening. I bought both Raamat and Second skin and the SS was alittle thicker and less messy to apply. But for the buck Raamatt was awesome.
Weight wise im not worried about it because i could careless. I didnt buy the car to make it fast lol. I would have to say with all the sound deadening in the car i could see it being a total of about 200 lbs. The difference is night and day. You dont hear any road noises just wind because of the glass top.
ExpresScion 07-22-2008, 01:01 AM Why did you do the plastic fender lining? Any only parts? Looks sloppy.
gambitx78 07-22-2008, 03:13 AM ok number #1 think before you ask a question unless your just stupid.
Why did i paint the plastic liner hmmm well isnt that part of the wheel well? And im sure you would ask did i paint behind it also? Yes i did. Did i care if its sloppy or pretty hell no. I sound deadening the car because if you have never owned a european car or high end luxury car before you would beable to hear very little road noise because they sound deaded the ____ out of the cars. thats how i wanted the Tc to sound. So when i talked to the salesman at Second Skin he is the one who told me to paint EVERYTHING in the wheel well.
again i wonder why i waste my time posting this information if all i get is idiots comments or just haters because you cant afford to do what i have done.
Kratos 07-22-2008, 12:45 PM when calling someone stupid you should grammar check (i.e. you're not your) lol.
anyways, I wouldn't care either that a portion of the car that is tucked under a wheel well, behind a tire, hidden by the shadows looked good either, as long as it attenuated the sound. And i wouldn't care about how much weight it added, because i use my piddly 160hp car as a daily driver, i'm not trying to beat the gt-r at the Nuremberg. lol @ people concerned about such things.
I may do this as well, as I have already done secondskin and ensolite interior work.
Question: when you did the underbody, did you do everything e.g. the area where the exhaust runs the length of the car? or did you just pick and choose certain spots? How long did you let this dry before driving? Sorry if I missed that in previous or original post. yups!

LOL no worries, i never check my spelling plus i was venting!
Anyways, good question. I jacked up each side of the car and washed the belly first. Then dried it off and started with the panels closest to the exhaust, i didnt feel like taking the heat sheilds off the exhaust not dropping the exhaust to paint in that area but if i do get more time i probably will. You will have two huge areas to paint under the car and if you can try to fill in the gaps and cracks with alot of the paint. This seemed to make the car alittle stiffer.
I live in Florida and after i painted a layer on the car i would let it dry for about an hour and if it was tacky i would wait another 20 mins before i layed another layer. Also the Spectrum is water based so you dont want to do it on a rainy day! LOL
yellowxhoodie 07-22-2008, 04:27 PM good idea, but if you painted over any bolts...GL getting them off in the future. lol
MWKINCAID1 07-23-2008, 12:27 AM do you have to add this to the outside of the car, or can you use it on the inside of the car?
p.s. sorry if this is a stupid question, just wondering.
gambitx78 07-23-2008, 01:34 AM nope you can use the Spectrum inside the car also. I totally forgot to take pics of the trunk and the back wheel wells i did inside. I covered the rear of the car with the Spectrum and the outside. It doesnt smell at all and dries fast but again i live in florida and its been at least 90 everyday for weeks. If i would have bought this stuff first i would have used it on all the floor boards and the doors first and then used Rammatt and Second Skin Damplifier on top of that stuff. I believe you can also paint over the other deadeners but i did so much work on that stuff i dont feel like redoing it all.
gambitx78 07-23-2008, 04:18 PM i will have more pics of the finished and under belly soon. its been rainging everyday down here
Diluvium 07-23-2008, 04:30 PM wouldnt you get the same results as the spray form of the the sound deadeners? less work, probably cheaper
gambitx78 07-23-2008, 04:34 PM you can spray this stuff on also, i just dont have the compressor or the spray gun. im sure it would have saved me alot of time if I did.
Diluvium 07-23-2008, 04:51 PM well no neccessary a spray gun im sure that stuff would probably get stuck in the gun.
at Advance Auto they sell a Sound deadening spray by M3 and other brands too but M3 which ive used to deaden interior speakers can spray an even layer efficiently.
gambitx78 07-23-2008, 04:53 PM ahh yes i know exactly what your talking about. Your right it might be cheaper to do the spray cans but im not sure how thick you can make it.
Diluvium 07-23-2008, 04:53 PM pssh actually im gonna go try that later on today. will post pics when available
ERIK-TC 07-23-2008, 05:29 PM this thread makes me laugh
