Just installed a custom mid pipe with a 30in. resonator and the Tanabe Concept G. I was wondering how it will impact me MPG.

View Full Version : Does Exhaust decrease MPG? Tulazae7 07-22-2008, 02:04 AM Just installed a custom mid pipe with a 30in. resonator and the Tanabe Concept G. I was wondering how it will impact me MPG. jsingh 07-22-2008, 02:12 AM i wanna know the same....does adding the exhaust will lose MPG oh i will be getting HKS Hi- Power Exahaust it that helps!! :) thanks BZinn1 07-22-2008, 02:12 AM what milage were you gettign before........jsut normal driving........does not matter if you punch it at the stop lights.........my tC I get about 24 MPG.........some highway........mostly city........and drive a bit hard at times......... added a SRI intake and milage stayed the same........added TRD exhaust and milage stayed the same.........header on the way this week.......I figure milage to stay the same........ Any car I ever put a full exhaust in from intake to muffler never ran worse or got less MPG. indyTC 07-22-2008, 02:15 AM the harder u drive, you will lose a bit of mpg athletefeet66 07-22-2008, 02:16 AM wont change anything tcCALI 07-22-2008, 07:00 AM Just installed a custom mid pipe with a 30in. resonator and the Tanabe Concept G. I was wondering how it will impact me MPG. haha im gonna say yes it will cause you are gonna want to drive faster. just dont be a led foot and you will be fine! hookedonlucy 07-22-2008, 07:01 AM you will def lose gas mileage from wanting to drive faster with the exhaust tone i know this from having your setup :] hookedonlucy 07-22-2008, 07:02 AM btw, scientifically, i think it does decrease the MPG. (my guess) breaux_tC 07-22-2008, 07:05 AM seeing as it is only free-ing up backpressure and perhaps adding some hp depending on the setup... the only thing that would cause a decrease in mpg would be an exhuast tone driven lead foot IceCold8784 07-22-2008, 11:52 AM If the new exhaust was significantly heavier than your previous one, it might hurt your mpg. Otherwise, if you drive in the same manner that you were driving before, it shouldn't change. Oh, and post pics of the new exhaust. Diluvium 07-22-2008, 04:32 PM research guys.. cmv138 07-22-2008, 04:46 PM i heard that if you take out a cat you will loose some MPG. ScionizedRide 07-22-2008, 04:53 PM exhaust increases airflow which would increase fuel intake Mid_Life_tC-risis 07-22-2008, 11:46 PM ^^yes but not significantly with this car (unless you build the engine up and/or get boosted) ... dynos have shown only a 5-6whp gain replacing stock exhaust with a straight-through system ... I carefully document my mileage and installing I/H/E has not affected my mpg's a bit ... as long as you don't develop a lead foot or strap a cargo bin to your roof your mileage should stay the same. tcCALI 07-23-2008, 06:48 AM exhaust increases airflow which would increase fuel intake exhaust isnt gonna do anything to you mpg. the only reason it would is because you wanna drive harder. 2006bluetc 07-25-2008, 11:40 PM I actually just did I test I drove my car on the interstate through a tank of gas with an aftermarket header, s-pipe, axleback, and short ram intake and got 31 mpg on the interstate. I then took all of that stuff off and drove the same piece of interstate for a whole tank of gas and got 29 mpg so I say the aftermarket setup really helps Mid_Life_tC-risis 07-26-2008, 01:49 AM Your mpg's will vary from tank to tank even when your setup stays the same. The next fill-up after an unusually low 25.63mpg week I logged 31.06mpg (last November), only change I noted was the 2nd week was warmer. You really need to run 4-5 tankfuls with the same setup & average them out to see if there's a trend. 2006bluetc 07-26-2008, 04:03 AM I consistently average 31 mpg on the highway with the mods so I was happy, but all of that came off and now I'm getting ready to put on a turbo so screw the gas mileage. tC 07-26-2008, 04:32 AM nope but it's less restricting then stock so it may even improve MPG hookedonlucy 07-26-2008, 04:47 AM how the heck do u guys get 25-30 mpg! i only get like 20 Carlanga 07-26-2008, 04:48 AM I pretty much have that setup and the milage has been the same from the beginning. Last time I checked my scangauge I'm getting 32 mpg average which is perfect. Even when I installed the 18" there was no change. Now remember that it's going to sound nice so, no lead foot ok! Diluvium 07-26-2008, 02:49 PM all the aftermarket parts is just letting the car breath easier, so it should save gas. but i think a CAI would save an extra mile more then a short ram intake since short rams sucks hot air. also keeping your oil every 3k-5k miles will get the most out of MPG . thinner oil does savee gas too jsingh 07-26-2008, 04:14 PM i am thinking about getting a Megan Racing Drift Spec exhaust...and wud thier me any changes of even losing 1 mile to a gallon?? nickahhh 07-26-2008, 04:19 PM I actually just did I test I drove my car on the interstate through a tank of gas with an aftermarket header, s-pipe, axleback, and short ram intake and got 31 mpg on the interstate. I then took all of that stuff off and drove the same piece of interstate for a whole tank of gas and got 29 mpg so I say the aftermarket setup really helps It's probably more or less the intake? The aftermarket one is more efficient. And whatever doesn't affect A/F ratios significantly like an f/i setup won't change your gas mileage. And for chrissake, NO an exhaust will not affect your gas mileage. Think about this...the exhaust just manages the hot gasses exiting your engine? How should that affect gas milage when the engine is the responsible for what mileage you're getting? 2006bluetc 07-26-2008, 08:48 PM all the aftermarket parts is just letting the car breath easier, so it should save gas. but i think a CAI would save an extra mile more then a short ram intake since short rams sucks hot air. also keeping your oil every 3k-5k miles will get the most out of MPG . thinner oil does savee gas too The short ram I have is enclosed in an aluminum shroud which has a gasket that seal on the hood when shut and pulls air from the fender area....but I get what your saying tcCALI 07-26-2008, 09:01 PM but i think a CAI would save an extra mile more then a short ram intake since short rams sucks hot air. when you go over like 20mph all the air is sucked from out under the engine bay. plus when the sun is out is makes the ground very hot soo with a CAI you are just sucking hot air anyways. Tulazae7 02-01-2009, 07:45 PM Now that i have complete exhaust, Ingen CAI -> Weapon R 4-2-1 -> Spipe -> Custom mid -> Tanabe G. I can attest that i get better gas mileage on the highways, i just drove 450 miles on 13.9 gallons of gas, that makes 32.37 MPG with about 400 of that strictly on the highways at 75-80 mph. |
