Default Weird problem filling up with gas.

This happened to me at 2 different gas stations in the last 2 days.

I could not hold down the pump all the way without the pump stopping. At first I thought it was just the one gas station, then the next day I went to a completely different one and had the same thing happen! Anyone ever have this? Am i doing something wrong? Is there a pressure build up in the tank or something?

That's happened to me at a couple stations. It's not your car, its the ____ty gas pumps. It used to happen to me sometimes in my Integra too. Just don't go to those.

hmm, i think it might be the scion has a smaller opening for the fuel tank, causing the pressure to build up more than normal in the tank. That had been only the 2nd and 3rd time I filled up, so I'm going back to the first place I filled up to see if it happens there.

The actual opening for the fuel filler neck has to meet and ISO spec before the car can be released to the public. That's the law. They've all gotta be the same size. It's not that it's smaller, it's that cheap gas stations suck.

Yea, that makes sense. Was probably just a coincidence then , either that or just a weird freak build up of pressure in my tank...

This one has been discussed before. The best answer I saw was to make sure when you put the pump in your gas tank to NOT seal tight with the rubber gasket from the pump. Back off a little. This has worked for me. If you put the pump all the way in then you have the pressure problem and pump cutting off.

spekaing of ____ty pumps... i turned awway from a pump for like 10 seconds, and the auto cut off didnt.. well cut off.

i look over and see that i had filled up 14.6 gallons... Im like, d00d my car doesnt even take that much!!

so i look over and there is a nice stream of gas dow the side of the car, on the weheel, and a lot on the ground. Curious enough there was ALREADY absorbant sand stuff on the ground, where it has obviously already happened.

so i went into to the d00d, and explained to hime what happened, and he said legally i had to be by myc ar at all times.

i explaiend to him, that even if i was watching it.. what could i have done!!

he did nothing for me, so i paid for my 14.6gallons of gasm drove to another gas station, and got the *scratch your paint special* for 3 bucks. It was late and iw as with someone.

not going to that station agian!

I live in Jersey, here we don't pump the gas. someone else does, and everytime they pump they have a problem holding up the lever.

i've had the same problem. just today infact. i don't think it needs to be addressed. just hold the nozzle out a lil further than you normally would. it works for me.

ive jus found i shouldnt be lazy and should hold it for the whole 30 seconds it takes to fill up...

what are we reduced to??? i had this problem for awhile until i found it easier to squeeze the handle and keep it that way. oh well if i get arthritis from holding the gas nozzle, ill live with it :D

I only go to one gas station to fill up and that's at the Racetrack. I never have problems filling up there, everywhere else I do.

I had this problem on my Corolla as well. It's all in holding the pump just right so that the gas doesn't back up and the set the pump shutoff off.

It is just certain stations have touchier pumps then others, otherwise its USER error

Must be, it is so complicated to fill up a car with gas, I must have lost the touch after 10 years of doing it, is there a course I can sign up for to learn?

It's not a Scion specific problem. I think it comes from people topping off their tanks and messing up the pumps vapor recovery. Here's what I do and it works almost every time:

When the pump kicks off prematurely, hold the handle all the way open. Shake the tip down inside a little. Release the handle. Now turn the pump handle to the side until it is at about the 3 O'clock position (assuming the regular hanging position is 6o'clock) Slowly start squeezing the gas until it is at full flow and you can lock the trigger. Then slowly let it rotate back to the 6o'clock position and it should stay flowing. Sounds strange but I get good results...
