Like the title says, my 08's are under the knife right now. I am currently tinting the sidemarker with VHT nite shades, and I will soon to be putting in some CCFL's in the high beam reflector housing. If the rings do fit, I will tell everyone where I got them from and what size they are. I measured the housing with a digital caliper gauge and it read around 98mm at the smallest spot so we will see. I am also hoping to try and do a retro with some s2000 projectors, but I am still currently looking for the projectors.

I will post pictures once the sidemarker is finished and once the rings are put into place!!! Any tips, ideas, feedback, etc. would be great!

are you doing 2 or 3 rings. i have been wanting to try and fit a ring around the turn signal. might look good, might look tacky, but still want to try it.

if your going a retrofitting route I would of did 05-07 headlights. They look a lot better in my opinion.

I am actually going to only do one for now.... just one around the high beam reflector :nails: what do you think of that idea?

I never did a retrofit for a 08+ headlights but It seems like the pre 08's headlights have a lot more room to play with.

with the 08's since they already come with projectors it doesn't seem that bad. It can very easily look factory and there is plenty of room for s2000's or tsx's. here is a nice thread....

http://high-intensity.org/forums/showthread.php?t=553

I am looking for something like that, looks factory pretty much... but the other stuff I am doing doesn't look so factory lol...

and I am only going to do one ccfl ring around the high beam reflector for now... Will post pics when the rings come in :D

08 halo DIY!!!

alright, I will haha.... once the halos come in, I will post pictures of them in the housing, where I will be running the wiring, cost, and materials used... also i will post pictures of the process I took (of course I don't want to do a diy on taking apart a headlight, everyone should be good with that right?!?) if not, heat the oven up to 215, place headlights in for 15 min., take them out and quickly pry them apart starting frome the inside working your way out. Be sure to not stretch the plastic too much and to be careful!

I will also show the sidemarkers when they are finished, although I already started on them so I can't do a diy on the tinting part, but just follow FLEA's diy on tail light tinting, same thing only doing it to the side marker.

I will want some feedback of the looks before I put them together (i.e. if I should try and do more halos, where I should place them, etc.

oh and as far as retrofitting projectors, I will say that I have changed from s2k's to lexus sc430 projectors with clear lenses. Those projectors have great potential and look amazing with e30 lenses and tsx lenses... plus they are TONS cheaper than s2k and have about the same amount of output, intensity, sharpness (once you swap the lense of course).

why does everyone want me to sell my 08's and do them in 05-07's??? lol I bought these for $240 and thought that was a steal! I love the looks of them, and i like how it looks factory if you were to do a retrofit! 05-07's have been done a lot, and I do have a set of 07's sitting at my house, but I would rather give this a go first. I want them to be unique and with the mods I am planning to do I am sure they will be...

who knows, maybe if they look clean enough when I am done people will be persuading others to purchase 08's vs. 05-07's. :P

oh and just an fyi, I have hid's with these, and I also did the squirrel spotter fix. I am just interested in more output, sharpness, and width now!

hmm..i wonder if the 08 projector bracket would fit into the 05-07 housing. if it does, that would save sooo much work for retrofitters. i just took a look at my spare set of 06 and the back of the headlights look identical with the exception to the relocation of the little light bulb. probably wouldn't be too cost-effective though since you probably wont be able to get a hold of a set unless you buy the headlights. but if it was a perfect fit, all that would have to be done is to trim the projector to fit rather than spend hours upon hours of making a mounting bracket.

I would venture to say that it would fit for the most part, but your high beam reflector housing wouldn't line up right... which I am sure you could fix but you are right it wouldn't be cost effective...

I have Lexus SC430 projectors on the way as well as E30 clear lenses for them.

Seems like you have quite a bit of work ahead of you. I'm located up in Platte County by KCI airport.

I was just talking to STNC about doing some changes to my '08s. I was along the lines of blacking out the side marker and the chrome rings. Your setup looks way too advanced for a noob like me. ha.

here is a list if anyone is wanting to do this themselves... so far, not that cheap but not half bad either... look for deals!!!

SC430 projectors = $145 after shipping
E30 lenses = $64 after shipping (got them from someone on hidplanet.com)
Halos (I was going to keep a secret, but wth) = www.lightwerkz.com $55. Get the 95mm rings (measured housing and the smallest part oh the high beam housing is 98mm).
D2S adapters = $25
Bulbs = 81522+ (haven't purchased yet but should be around $50)

I will list other supplies later, but the current total is around $340 (if you include the price of bulbs). Not too horrible.

Oh sweet I know where you are at sorta, I live in Blue Springs.

This setup isn't all that advanced really, the projectors are going to be the hardest thing to do, and it still doesn't seem that bad. The halo's are probably going to be cake, all I have to do is line it up to where I like it, and glue it down so its secure... then done. Of course I have to run wiring but I am thinking about just running it through the running lamp bulb area. The only problem with that is that it would need to be sealed up so the headlights don't get any condensation/moisture.

If you wanted to do halo's, that wouldn't be a problem at all. I am going to try and do a little demo on here showing what steps I took. And if you wanted to meet up or whatever and work on your lights, I have no problem doing that as well. I would like to finish this first though so I know how easy it is and the right steps to take.

If you want to see my ride in person sometime too I am down, I need to check the local board on here and see if there are any meets coming up soon...

damn I just rambled hahahaha

My goal was to bake and seal them(successfully) while doing a black out along with adding some HIDs. Imo I thought the sealing part would be the hardest to avoid F'n up the headlights. I'm a little hesitant at the moment.
But yeah, pm me sometime and the KC peeps can meet up or something.

re-sealing isn't that bad at all actually. All you have to do is put them together, put them in the oven. Then squeeze together and put your bolts in and tighten, then repeat if necessary. Thats all I did to my old set and they never fogged up.

If you are going to just throw in some HID's, then you have to at least do the squirrel spotter fix, which would be real easy once the lense was removed. That way you don't have any unwanted light above the cutoff.

The tint actually has a little bit of red in it, so when lit up it will probably look more red than amber. I looked through it under a light and it looked red. Be sure that if/when you do tint them, that you paint them as evenly as possible, that way you don't have darker/lighter spots. Mine isn't perfect, but it will do well enough for now. I have never been taught how to paint so I just learn as I go, learn from my mistakes lol....

When will I be finished??? not sure seeing how I just got my SC430 projectors in and there is quite a bit of trimming that I have to do to get it to fit, I will post pics in a few of what I am talking about. I also got my E30 lenses and those things are real clear! I can't believe how crappy the sc lense is compared to it, it is even worse then our 08 halogen lense lol.... but none of them even compare to the e30! But to answer your question I hope to be done before the Import face off which is Aug. 31st but we will see. I really would like to get done before the end of next week! I still need D2S bulbs, I am looking for 85122+.... I will buy them tonight or tomorrow probably.

P.S. blackonblack91, your ride looks good man, I like how the black sidemarker looks and honestly I was only going to do the sidemarkers until I got all of these ideas in my head lol.... 300+ dollars later :lalala:

I'm thinking about doing HIDs on my 09. Do I really have to address the "squirrel finders" issue? The car is one week old and I hate to be taking the lenses apart.

To fix the squirrel finder issue, you have to take the headlights out. Then you can either...
a. Bend the shield down to cover the squirrel spotter whole (although light still can escape through, just an fyi). Light coming out will be reduced a lot, but there will still be some.

b. Or you can cut up a coke can, and jbweld the coke can piece over the squirrel spotter hole (all while the headlight is together, this is tricky, what I did was used double sided sticky tape and used a pencil to put the piece in place.

B is a lot of work, and A will be a lot better than leaving it open, but whatever you want to do is up to you, it is your car and your choice :D

UPDATE: The trimming has begun, I didn't realize how much bigger (width wise, the projector as a whole isn't as long as the factory one actually, just MUCH MUCH WIDER!) the SC430 projectors are. So far so good!

Will post pictures tomorrow!

dont bend the shield, you'll mess with the cutoff and it will never be the same.

my cutoff with the stock shield wasn't bad, that piece of aluminum is very sturdy, it would take a lot of force to bend the whole thing... that would ruin your cutoff.... why do you state that it will ruin the cutoff?

haha... I need to finish it.... I am close, just need to figure out what combination of spacers I need to use with my lenses, then I need to level them and thats it... what projectors do you want to use??? Do you want bi-xenon or single?? I can do single xenon, but the bixenon I would have to learn how I would have to wire them so they would work when you use your highbeams.

Also, what shrouds would you like???

Do you like my halo setup? I can show another picture of them lit if you'd like... I will also show a picture of the projector mounted later...

I have no clue, I guess I want just the lows to be projector, i have the planet scion hid's, but I'm sure I can get different bulbs. I also have Oznium angel eyes as well.

And idk about shrouds, I've seen a lot of people use the BMW shrouds/

t_urbo_C_harged
09-06-2008, 06:52 PM
yeah e46 shrouds are the most popular, and I hear there is a replica that is a lot cheaper of that shroud. If you want just lows then the most popular are TSX's, s2k's, and fx projectors (used just as low beam only). I use SC430's because they are very similar to s2k's but a lot cheaper. Some say the reflector bowl is better than the s2k bowl, but the only downfall is the lenses. So with a clear lense swap, they have similar output as s2k's... heres a link

I don't know man, I would have to do it first before I can figure out how much to charge lol... so when I get my 08's done I will do my 07's, I will try to be quick so I can get yours done and let you know the price... I don't want to charge that much, since it is a hobby for me... I would probably charge around $150 for labor, then if I were to get the parts, I would charge you for how much the parts cost... I would probably charge you half when you gave me the lights, then you pay the rest when I give them to ya... but again, let me do mine, and I will let you know.

As far as projectors are concerned, TSX's will give you a nice sharp cutoff, and can give lots of color with its natural flare. s2k will give you a very sharp cutoff, and so will sc430's. S2k's are the most expensive (around $300 for a pair). I picked up my sc's for half that, then bought nice lenses for $60 bucks. Theretrofitsource has a tsx retro kit, that has bulbs, projectors, and ballasts all together for like $300 I think. It is up to you man. but I will be doing the retro first before I let you trust me with your headlights.

I am thinking of leaving the chrome rings because it kind of makes the headlight still look stock. I think if all of it were to be black then it would be too black... Plus I don't have any good paint equipment so I would have to rattle can and I really don't want to screw them up lol...

Thanks for the comment, I am trying to do the install as clean as possible to look as stock as possible :lalala:

After I finish mine, do you want yours done? :P

Does anyone know of a location, shop, person, business, etc. that does retrofitting very well. I jus bought the 2009 tC and I am ready to buy the TSX projectors for the retrofit. Jus lookin for someone to actually retrofit them into my tC and do all the customizations of the cutoff, etc. If anyone knows a place or person, please reply or email me at Philly4Ever04@gmail.com

If you don't want to do the jb weld thing, then just bend them down with a screwdriver... that shield is sturdy so I doubt you will bend it all and mess your cutoff line up...

If anyone knows someone, business, company, etc that is selling a pair please give me their information. Waitin on finding a set of headlights to retrofit for my car is the only thing that holdin up me gettin the retrofit done. By the way, I have the money waitin and ready to go. So if anyone has any info please reply, send me a message, or email me at Philly4Ever04@gmail.com

no you don't, just take the bulb you and look in there, you will see the metal flap. The hole is underneath it, just bend the flap down until it is flush with the cutoff shield. You still may get some, but not nearly as much! lemme see if I still have those threads saved on how to fix the issue... oh and when I fixed mine with jb weld, I used a pencil and a screw driver and did it all with the headlamp completely assembled.

philly... look on the forum here in the classifieds and look on ebay... you can find deals trust me. If not, then get brand new ones from TRDsparks.com.... cheapest new 08+ tc headlights around.

And you have to have 2 years work experience minimum as well as pass all 8 automotive ASE tests... The best part is I took all of the tests at 1 time and passed them all easily on my first try.

As far as color, both 4 and 5 look good. I think I am going to have to look at it from further away (the cutoff) and see which ones better then... thanks for all of your input!

You should, the tests aren't that bad. They actually wont let you take all 8 tests in one night unless they are re-certifications. They split mine up 4 one night, and 4 on another. They are pretty time consuming I must say, but not too hard. Definitely should give it a shot dave!

4... 5 has too much color at this distance... my other projector has more purple for some reason but both look great when they are on together.

Well I am not using a kit, since there isn't a kit out that offers 85122+ D2S bulbs. But I am using MobileHID's balasts and relay harness. Although, I might be switching to his slim ballasts soon (they are digital and only use 5.5A max, 3.1A running).

D2S is the size for the SC430 projector and most HID projectors out there.

Yes I do still have the headlights open, do you want the inside diameter or the outside diameter? I can do that today when I get to work or something.

I am guessing just by looking at it that the projector or "low" beam ring is 2.5" or a little bit more. The turn signal looks to be smaller but I will have some measurements up later...

is it possible to use my current hid's and just swap for like the s2k projector? or do you have to use the size for the new projector...still confused about that...i believe the outside diameter will do...perhaps both if it's not a hassle...I appreciate it...

you will need to get d2s bulbs to fit the s2k projector, and id say swap out the whole thing while your at it. meaning OEM d2s bulbs and ballast.

oem ballasts are preferred but you can get away with some aftermarket ballasts...
