View Full Version : Still got that clunking noise when I shift.. Anyone else?
Djicey702 08-02-2008, 07:07 PM Okay so.. When I release the clutch while in 1st gear, I hear this clunk noise. I have all new motor mounts (4 total) and everything else is nice and tight as far as I know. I have had this problem from day one and it is just getting worse. I have read another post and found other people are experiencing the same problems.. I am ready to solve this problem!:ponder:
It maybe be a bad cv joint or a problem in the differential (I hope not). I will keep doing more research.. If anyone has heard of this and knows a fix, please let me know..

1st through 3rd clunks for me.
When our clutch is engaging and disengaging, I have found a noticeable clunk even at a complete stop. You're not the only one though, that's in a deep research. Toyota tech's have called it 'normal operation'. Strength in numbers on a situation like this when it just involves odd sounds, will definitely help to get some attention on this issue.
Unfortunately, threads on our transmission issues disappear into history with only a couple responses.
unxpectederror 08-04-2008, 12:59 PM my 1st to 2nd shift clunks and 2nd to 3rd makes a much softer clunk noise after that no more clunk noise
id say its pretty normal
cmv138 08-05-2008, 02:01 AM are you guys running stock clutch or after market?
koontz946 08-05-2008, 04:30 AM ill check mine out tomorrow... by the time i start moving i usually cant hear anything with my music but i imagine it's something i should keep an ear out for if it turns out to be something serious

Stock, I started hearing it at 150 miles on the odo.
tCyoung1 08-05-2008, 09:46 AM mine has always done it since i got it 3 years. i have notice that lately it has been more apparent though. i'm still on the stock clutch at 58,000 miles
red123 08-05-2008, 11:18 PM I have the clunking noise too especially 1st to 2nd.. stock clutch. redline tranny oil, poly mounts. I guess its normal, just a character of our cars. any other ideas?
lvlonkey 08-05-2008, 11:56 PM have the same noises here 1-3.

In the process of our clutch engaging/disengaging, one of the moving parts has to be faulty/designed improperly. Someone here has done at least every attempt at eliminating this noise but it still remains. Synchros, mounts, fluids, etd, bushings, etc.
Djicey702 08-06-2008, 11:35 PM Dang! I was beginning to think I was the only one.. ha ha
Well here is what I got. Our cars make that noise because of the "backlash" in our differentials. So, as it would seem, some of us have more backlash then others possibly due to excessive wear, improper fluid changing intervals, and improper adjustment from the factory.
So yes it is normal and some cars have it worse than others.
So what now right? Well, we do have options!
First I highly recommend changing your gear oil no matter how low your mileage is. (I gotta a story about that!)
Second, consider upgrading your rear motor mount (I bought a brand new one and filled in the voids with urethane, so now I don't have all that vibration and cabin noise like those other people who installed the energy suspension one.) That made a big difference but noise is still there, but not as frequent.
Third, if it really bothers you that much! You gotta take it to a trust worthy transmission shop to have them adjust the backlash and while they got it apart, you might as well tell them to install a lightweight flywheel and an lsd.
Good luck to all!
Djicey702 08-09-2008, 12:34 AM I decided to live with the noise for now. I have Mobile synthetic gear oil in my diff. I wondered if Royal Purple might clear up that noise but since Red123 used Redline Oil and still has the noise then I guess heck with it!! I'll bet the new body style Tc will not have any of these issues.. ha ha, But I guess we'll see....
red123 08-09-2008, 12:51 AM yeah man i have redline, you have mobile.. just made our shifting feel more smoother, but clunk noise not really. Im gonna have my LSD, clutch, light flywheel, speedsource poly rear scheduled to be installed 2 weeks from now. im not too optimistic about the clunk noise to disappear after the install but we shall see. ...peace
Ace83 08-12-2008, 02:39 AM so did you get the clunking fixed after fixing the mount?
joshrobb08tc 08-14-2008, 11:31 PM i have a 08 tc and i can hear that clunk too....stock clutch and noticed it at like 2,000
red123 08-27-2008, 02:03 AM so did you get the clunking fixed after fixing the mount?
some partial updates....just got the car back two days ago...they were not able to install the rear mount coz i guess the poly mounts from speedsource needs some shaving or something....anyways....clunking noise is still there but not as bad as before, im gonna do more observations.
the shop used motylgear 75w90 for the tranny fluid and man...it seems like it made a huge difference compared to the redline mt-90 that i used before.. i dont know could be combination of the new clutch, flywheel and lsd. but the shifting feel is totally different...i like it!
TylerC08 08-27-2008, 02:40 AM Motul Gear oil...I have had that behind Redline but that is interesting you say that. I have heard of them but not that much.
I took mine to the dealership and ended up getting about 7 bearings replaced and a new 5th gear all under warranty. The cause of the noise was the bearings were out of spec. So if your still under warranty take it to the dealer ship.
Ace83 08-27-2008, 07:27 PM got mine fixed! definitely its the mount on mine..
BoostedBeastBox 09-05-2008, 09:31 PM any more updates on this? i just started hearing it at 29k, it happens if im cruising in gear and tap the gas sometimes too
CSOCSO 09-05-2008, 09:35 PM i got the noise too but no problem.. i dont even pay attention to it anymore.
BoostedBeastBox 09-05-2008, 10:03 PM I try not to, but it bothers me for some reason.. It drives fine so i guess i got to live with it.
TylerC08 09-06-2008, 06:43 AM The mounts I think are the reason for most of the clunking while your vehicle is in gear at a steady speed. Our engine needs more support for 'all that' torque but you might try out an ETD just for the hell of it.
Ace83 09-06-2008, 07:32 PM it shouldnt clunk when the motor mounts are fine, even on stock mounts and turbo there shouldnt be a clunk, mine got fixed after fixing the mount
TylerC08 09-07-2008, 01:08 AM Could be the backlash of the trans. itself, who knows. Nothing in my car at least, sounds like it's secure. Re-sale is going to be a beeyotch on this car.
BoostedBeastBox 09-07-2008, 06:40 PM The wierd thing is i only hear the sound at the exact moment i disengage the clutch and press the gas pedal. Im if wondering if this is even the same sound everyone else is experiencing.
Ace83 09-09-2008, 06:57 AM The wierd thing is i only hear the sound at the exact moment i disengage the clutch and press the gas pedal. Im if wondering if this is even the same sound everyone else is experiencing.
i had that with a bad mount or improperly placed.. as you press the gas, the car pulls a lil then clunk.. thats like a motor mount problem
TylerC08 09-09-2008, 07:06 AM ^^^Wait I thought you said that couldn't be a engine mount issue..? I'm confused
Ace83 09-09-2008, 07:12 AM at first i thought it wasnt coz we visually inspected it and nothing seems wrong, cranked it on the air and nothing is hitting.. then i suspected it was my clutch, find it hard to believe coz the symptoms feels like a mount problem.. i bought new motor mounts and the mechanic said there was a bad mount..
TylerC08 09-09-2008, 07:15 AM Hmmm so something internally is stressing out in the stock mounts...I assume...?
Ace83 09-09-2008, 07:18 AM not sure how it broke, it was perfect before my clutch install.. i the closest possible i can remember is that the installer jacked up the motor and the tranny and most likely they squeezed one of the mounts to hard
TylerC08 09-09-2008, 07:20 AM Oh, so the mounts broke and started clunking after your clutch install then?
Ace83 09-09-2008, 07:31 AM yup after the clutch install.. under normal use, no accident.. there is a slim chance for it to break.. maybe tightening factory bolt will solve it like some others did
Steventc07 09-09-2008, 02:51 PM mine will do it occasionally too. no noticable issues from it tho
Letda13 09-24-2008, 07:57 PM I know im a little late, but, I had the same thing as well. Mine actually turned out to be my cold air intake hitting the body when the the motor would torque. I build a piece similair to what dr.isotope sells and that took care of the problem. If you dont have a cai...dont know what to tell you...lol.
