Default Scion tC Navigation system advice

Hello All:

I want to add a Navigation system (with screen included) to my tC and was looking for some advice.

I am currently looking at a pioneer AVIC-88DVD and AVIC-N1 as well as
the Kenwood KVT-715DVD.

I am trying to keep it around $1400-$1800, those models are what i saw at Best Buy.

If anyone had any suggestions or horror stories from different models i would very much appreciate it

JoMiLe

Have you ever considered using a PDA for a GPS/Nav system? I have one and when I do need nav help it comes in very handy. You most likely will not be using the nav every day. A PDA's organizational ability will also benefit you in many ways a built in nav system will not.

The units that you mentioned all have the flip out in-dash monitor. They will all fit, but you when the screen opens, it may interfere with the tC's stereo door cover (unless you take off the cover). Thats why I didn't get the AVIC-N1 and got Kenwood DDX7015 with the DV4100 navi unit. It looks like it fits almost perfectly in the dash.

nycazn79:

How much did you pay for the DDX7015 with the DV4100?

Ebay:
1. $893.00 DDX7015 DVD receiver (new)
2. $699.00 KNA-DV4100 navigation system (new)
Total = $1592 + shipping

Crutchfield:
Total = $2399.00 for both

nycazn79:

How was the install. Was there any box you had to stick anywhere or was it all in the dash?

Any major difference between that and the eclipse?

I can easily locate the kenwood but I find less eclipse?
Any ideas

The eclipse is a better unit if you can find a dealer and don't mind paying more for it. The nice thing about it is that the DVD & GPS drive is built into the head unit. Also, the tC's standard Toyota plugs right into the unit without needing any wiring adaptors.

The Kenwood unit needs a sepertate box (size of a computer CD-ROM drive) for the GPS features that can be mounted under a seat or the trunk. Thats the major difference along with the price. (Kenwood System is $500-$1000 cheaper depending where you get it).

To install either unit, you'll have to drill new holes on the mounting bracket to allow the unit to fit in deeper if you want the stereo door to close.

I get lost a lot too and you really should consider something thats not necessarily in dash. If you end up driving some other car, ie: drop off a friend in their car or your car is in the shop, you're gonna get lost and you're going to be missing it. Right now I'm using an ipaq with a bluetooth gps and tom tom navigator software. Love it cause the pda has surprisingly come in handy and since I use it as an address book, all my addresses are there when I need to go anywhere and need gps.

If you want a bigger lcd, there are portable sets like Tom Tom Go which I've heard good things about. Things to take note of though:
-Lots of these system may require you to buy more memory to store any decent sized maps
-Most of them require at least a pc interface for downloading maps (i think there is a magellan one with a built in hard drive that has the whole US in it already which is handy)

Once again thanks for the replies.

I have looked into the Kenwood and Eclipse.

While i am researching those two, are there any other navigation systems that will fit into the tc with out any cover issues?

Thanks again

i work at a stereo shop in mississippi and you better listen to the eclipse guy, that screen is a perfect double din fit, all you will need is a harness, that screen is a one piece deal no extra brain for about 2300 dollars around here not sure where else but that piece is awesome, has all kinds of features, three year warranty, one year theft guarantee where if someone steals you screen eclipse will replace it one time within the first year and the picture quality is awesome, kenwood and pioneer is a waste of time, alpine is the only other i would go with and that is the iva d 900, but preferably the eclipse, if clarion ever gets a navigation add on to their screens they are cool too

i have the kvt-815dvd in my tc and love it, i had to take the sliding door off the trim panel but my tv is open all the time and flows with the curve of the dash so it looks really good and the silver on the in dash matches the trim perfect

Hey, some helpful info maybe:
1) Never use a PDA navi unit, because its simply too small to operate while on the move, I tried it, and I commend that person who said s/he used it, but its too hard to operate and see while driving.

2) The Eclipse AVN 2454 is probably the best unit but it has a few downsides you should take into consideration:

a) You can't play a DVD movie and run the navigation system at the same time, because the NAVI uses the DVD ROM for its Maps DVDisc. Also, you don't want to constantly be pulling that DVD out because a replacement is between 300 and 600 dollars.

b) The DVD Movie player will turn off when it detects you started moving your car. The Eclipse dealer usually connects this to your car to sense speed.

c) This one is silly, but the volume control buttons are on the Right side, closer to the passenger, it Is a japanese unit :p

Default I want to know too

Hi guys/gals... those who have the AVN2454 does the GPS navigation have voice? Does it tell you turn here and there?

I have seen the navigation on a Lexus ES330 and it very nice... is the AVN2454 like that?

All the pictures I've seen of the AVN2454 map looks big no detail... can someone take a picture of it while driving just down thier street?

I wanted to get this:
http://www.oemvalue.com/

But I don't know whats JBL Amp and such? If I did go this route which one is for a tC?

Only thing is I really really want the AVN2454 since it looks nicer and have DVD. Not to mention a rear camera add-on... but I don't want to spend the money unless I am really sure it has all the goodies I'm looking for.

Like good GPS... (I get lost easy), with voice (telling you turn left 50ft, turn right 20 ft, etc).

What about map cd? How is it that one get updated map on a CD in like 2 years?

Most likely my source will be on eBay since at the dealers they are selling the AVN2454 for 2300 not including install.... wow...

Do mfg still honor warranty if you get it from eBay? Since I'm used to dealing with warranty as in if the product was made in 04 and they have a 3 yrs warranty no matter whose the owner or who you bought it from it expires in 07... you know what I mean?

I've looked into portable ones and laptop ones too... I was afraid that those aren't accurate and keeps loosing signals...

Because people always say you get what you paid for... Very true as I've spent so much trying to find cheaper solution and they are all crap so... its like if I had only gone with the more expensive stuff.

I wanted the Microsoft thing for the laptop too but... no sound.... its dangerous if I have to keep looking at the screen... plus where are you going to mount the laptop? Thats why I said no to that idea.

Ahhhh... this sheet is stressing me out. Really want something but not enough info to make a decision.

Hey, the laptop works great... dont buy the microsoft one, Im a GPS freak, so just to give you my advice, get the DeLorme Navigation system, they even have one that works with bluetooth.... aside from that it Talks! yay! $170 for the bluetooth one, or $120 for the USB powered one, at Staples
