Default Shut the door w/ window down. Sounds like crap!

When I had my car serviced for a few TSB's the drivers window was rolled all the way down. I got in the car and closed the door. Ratttttttlllllllllllleeeee...... I don't know if it's my xB or all, but the door and it's componets rattle like hell. Sounds real cheap....

That same day the dealer gave me rides to and from the house while my Box was worked on. Rode in a new Highlander. Man, could you tell the difference between the xB and Highlander. I know that the Highlander is about twice the price of the xB.

Has anyone done anything to make the interior quieter with various rattles or quieter on the highway (noise wise)?

Anyhow shut your door with the window down and let me know how it sounds.

Thanks!!

Mine has made some noise but some sound dampening in the doors will make a ton of difference. I did my front but haven't had time to do the back and the difference is night and day. Find some Dynamat or similar stuff and that should help. If the noise is very bad, you might want to check the hardware to make sure nothing is loose.

Not all cars will do that, I've had plenty that were solid as a rock.. believe it or not, my old tC was one of them. Anyway, my box does the same thing, sounds like the window is going to break. It's just cheaply made/put together is all, some sound dampening will make a world of difference.

Sound dampening doesn't really make a difference if the window is down when you shut the door. I have two layers of good sound deadening on every door and it still does it.

Thicker windows and an extra 40K for an IS300 helps too.

How did you Dynamat your doors 'ChadFo'?

I was going to apply Dynamat Extreme on mine but didn't want to remove the sheet of plastic. I ended up using eDesign's v.3 liquid sound deadener and applied a whole gallon to the four door panels. I'm thinking of applying some more material to the actual doors too, so I'm curious how you did yours....

PS: My New Beetle's doors never rattled.

Here's a 2 page thread from mid 2004 that discusses these issues:

if you want to sounddeaden the door, you've gotta remove the plastic. Don't worry, it's real easy to put back on.

I used b-quiet extreme. Pretty cheap and seems to work well. Went on real easy. Don't know what it sounds like when I close the door with the window down as my windows are usually up.

I put dampening sheets on the outside door skin and then some on several of the larger areas on the inside sheet. It's been a while since I did it so I don't remember every detail but I tried to put pieces anywhere that I thought would transmit noise either from vibration of driving or something moving about like wiring, etc. Just remember that you don't have to cover every square inch for the dampening to be effective. Testing has shown, no I don't have any specifics that I can share it's been too long, that covering a small area vs. covering the whole area resulted in little difference in the dampening characteristics.

The plastic is no problem to take off and put back on just don't let the black adhesive touch anything. Putting dampening on plastic stuff helps but metal vibrates and transmits more sound because it is thin, dense and flexible. Put most of your effort there. Unless the window or drive mechanism is actually striking something putting extra dampening on the inside door sheet will will reduce the noice.

Not true... have you every shut the door in a Volvo S60 with the window open?
They don't make noise.

you should close the door on my Porsche a little to hard - the window sounds like it's going to explode when it slaps closed - 5x what the orange crate cost. - There are alot of cars that sound 'weak' when closing the door, regardless of cost.

Just sell your car and get on with your life. You complained about your box since you got it. Buy your house and your hatch and go on down the road! :D

dam, I guess so. I also have the rattle, but I never did it again. Its just like the old GM vehicles that had no rail at all and you lowered the window and closed the door. Over time the window came loose. So stop opening your windows 1/4 and just roll the dam thing all teh way down! :D

Not true.

Many older cars do, but these days it's limited to less expensive cars (or poorly built new cars)

My VW Jetta never did that with any window, always sounded like a bank vault when you shut the door.

That is one area where I have to agree though. The flimsy rattling, while common in cars in this price range, is a little disconcerting. I am planning on trying some of the dynomat myself when I get around to it. It's a minor nusaince but it seems like there should a simple, cost effective way to build car doors that don't do this. I expect it is more of a priority for Americans and Europeans. Japanese don't seem to mind a car door that weighs 12 oz. and don't immediately identify that with cheap quality.

Then again, they build house out of paper too.... :?
