Hi guys and gals.
Has anybody thought about or looked into rear mount turbo systems?

I have been looking at the one from Squires and I must admit that I am intrigued.

those tend to be more effective with v6/v8s

yeah, i imagine the lag on those with a 4 cyl would be unbearable. im not all that crazy about having the piping hanging down under that car like that either. hit a bad bump and time to call triple A.

If you have the space in the engine bay, why not just go for a regular set up? It will be more efficient, no worries on sucking water or anything through the turbo. Given it will be less unique, but in the long run, especially if this will be your DD, a better bet.

Ummmm exactly. There is no room in the engine bay without major mods moving batteries and modding the headers etc. This setup is a lot easier.

there is a tC locally with a rear mount turbo setup

I would love to see it. Can you pm me with any contact info (with the owner's permission of course)?

It is highly likely we will be doing a feature on the STS turbos in the first edition of HyperCarZ and I would love to include it with that feature.

Thanks

the rear mount turbo kit for tc planned by strippermotorsports was unsuccessful.. it just died without any updates

Hmmmm just tried to go to the strippermotorsports web site and it looks like they may be out of business.

just picked up the latest issue of S3 ( it had a tC on the cover, caught my intrest) and they have a tC with a rear mounted turbo on the cover with a detailed install spread. hadn't seen this style of turbo before, wonder what it would take to install in the D? the turbo would fit in the OEM muffler's spot, after cutting out the exhaust all the way up to the cat ( getting rid of the resonators) there might be room for the two pipes. I dont know jack about installing turbos and barely know how they work, so based off what they did with the tC, and what we know about the xD, could this be done? hopefully someone who does this kinda work could shed some light on this for us. if it did work, what else would be needed to make it happen, i.e. fuel injectors...

Can it be done? Yes.

Can it be done well? Yes.

Is it efficient? NO!

Yeah this rear mount turbo thing is a great idea, but trust me, looked into this waaaaaaaay before, when I bought my xD in Sep. 07. It works good in theory, but after all the research I did and questions asked, its just not an efficient setup for a 4 cyl. The exhaust temp isn't high enough where the turbo is for it to work at peak efficiency (meaning the air isn't moving fast enough). the most you're going to get out of it is 5 MAAAAYBE 6 lbs of boost, and thats going to be at a REALLY high RPM. And as mention before the lag would be HORRIBLE on such a small 4 cyl. The charge piping is WAAAAYYY too long for it to still effienctly keep the engine boosted at the proper RPMs.

I'm not trying to be a killjoy, by all means if someone wants to do it then do it! I think it'd be a killer project! But I don't think it would be anything much more than show....

turbo's should be attached to the engine, not the back bumper. but that's my opinion.

yeah, as creative as it is, i would think the lag would be horrible.

Just my 02 cents. :)

and to see if anyone picks up on a few things.

1. Rear mount does work. Its not at laggy as one would think

2. What about mid mount? Less piping....both ways

3. Use an Aerodyne turbo :) Self contained. No need for oil feed or drain. Internaly gated and does not need a blow off valve.

They cost a little more, but you are saving by not having to use the normal range of parts associated with other turbo kits.

Would use your stock header and b pipe. Then small section with adapter for turbo. Run what you want from the turbo back :)

Run 2" chargepiping on the hot side and most of the cold side then upsize to 2.5" before the TB for a blow through setup.

There is plenty of room for a setup like this :)

Be very cost effective. Not allot of work either.

Just an idea.

Todd

yea mid mount or 1/4 mount should work well. 1/4 mount will be more at peak efficiency and you wont have to worry about your header cracking at all. yay.

a nice drawing of the designs might help!
