View Full Version : Another "What's that?" moment
Old_Punk 12-15-2004, 05:09 PM The only external ID on my xB is a bB badge on the front and the tiny Toyota markings on the windows.
So, there I was, sitting in my car outside the laundramat, listening to Rage Against the Machine as my dog's bed pads washed. A customer pulled up next to me and gave the car a look as he walked in. Then he came back out, walked slowly all around the car, said nothing -- even though I was sitting in it -- and went back in.
A few moments later, the manager came out, walked all around the car, said nothing -- even though I was sitting in it -- and then walked around the car again.
Then the first guy came out and the two of them scratched their heads for a bit and walked around the car again. It's all I could do to keep from laughing.
Finally I get out and explained the xB to them in the easiest way possible. "It's a Toyota."
"O-o-o-o-h, a Toyota."
I showed them the interior, let them sit inside to see how roomy it is, told them the price, mpg and all that.
Just another day with the xB.
i got the same kind of reaction when i was waiting for my food outside of an Applebee's.
THE_DON 12-15-2004, 05:21 PM I still have my scion badge and people still ask me, "Is that one of those new Hondas?

melongunner 12-15-2004, 05:28 PM I often get asked "What is that thing?" Whenever random people ask me about my xB, its always referred to as a "thing"...of course it is usually followed by "Is it electric?" I guess we all get that one, though.

I had the same thing in CLT...I was at Carmel Commens. Before I get out of my XB this guy runs up to my car trying to read the badge on the grill and walked around the car and asked what it was and stated he had never seen a car liked this and kept me for 15 min for XB Q&A
TJandBOXCARWILLIE 12-15-2004, 07:35 PM I get 'the question' all the time. If I am in a mood, I'll talk with them. I swear, I must have sold at least five of these things.
Maybe I should get paid to drive the Box, by SCION.
Sciond 12-15-2004, 07:48 PM anyone else get those info cards in the mail?
agi_jw 12-15-2004, 08:10 PM i got like 15 of them (2 seperate envelopes .. dont know how many in each)

That's something, considering Carmel Commons (which the locals pronounce CAR-mul instead of Car-MEL) is in the middle of upper-middle-class suburbia where one is almost obliged by law to aspire to a luxury car or big SUV instead of an econobox.
I live by Freedom Park. Maybe I'll see you around.

LOL maybe.....I probably have the only one in the Ballantyne area.....hmmm isn't the Freedom park area upper-middle class suburbia also?..Excepting Eastover which is off the the charts..there youe need a G5 Wagon. And say Carmel..not being of local origin (NYC/NJ) transplant :D

Old_Punk 12-16-2004, 01:32 AM .hmmm isn't the Freedom park area upper-middle class suburbia also?
Yeah, but we're mostly a bunch of old empty nest hippies with little 60-year-old houses and 10-year-old Volvos.
pkoule 12-16-2004, 02:41 AM last week at the 86th street parking garage:
She: Is it electric?
Me: No, ma'am, it's a toyota.
tbone587 12-16-2004, 02:53 AM What is a bb? I thought it was the japanese version of an xb, so why do some of you guys have it? is it available in the west coast or somethign?
Kyle480 12-16-2004, 05:33 AM dude I just got my xB a week ago and I always get people asking me what it is and where I got it, one guy told me thought I was military and he thought I must of just brought a car back from Germany while I was based there. Another good thing is a lot of hot chicks as to look inside and sit down and see how roomy it is :D cant complain there.
windowtint 12-16-2004, 06:00 AM anyone else get those info cards in the mail?
got a dozen or so... looked at them for a moment, looked in the envelope for my paycheck - it was missing, apparently they forgot to include it. Tossed the stupid ___ info cards and now emptry envelope in the trash can. So... until Toyota sends me a check to cover my time to sell the things, they can sell them their own damn selves.
BrockAbabba 12-16-2004, 06:25 AM Having an xB has definately deadened my compassion for others. While I fuel is the only time I get the "is it electric?" I just kinda wanna yell at them.
I have leaned to enjoy driving other people's vehicles.....gives me a sense of privacy. I forgot how hard others are looking at me while I drive my FrieghtLiner (xB) around. I start to feel like I am at work with a huge zit on my forehead. Everyone lookin  but not saying anything.
Oh well.
ThunderGod 12-16-2004, 08:26 AM i might as well just work for SCION corp. with all the people stopping to see the xB, i end up encouraging them how kewl it is to be square

Nah, they're all xB's in the US but some of us bought bB badges just to be different or to look better. You can get them online from several sources.
