Well before I even talk to the dealer about my trade in, I'm wondering what the SOP for buying cars not yet on the lot. Our dealer only has a 18k RS and anything I want besides that would be about 2-6 weeks, maybe a week if something is in Chicago. Any way, if I agree to say purchase a White xA with Side Airbags (that’s all I want) and it takes 5 weeks, do I put my money down then and trade my car in (thus I have no transportation for 5 weeks) or do I wait till the car is in stock (by which time my trade in's values might be worth less do to mileage, change of book value or opinion). Also, how binding is an agreement like this, or how binding should it be, should I be signing and putting money down, or does that happen after they have the car in stock (and a vin number).
Thanks, just asking you guys first so I don't get misinformed else where.

That depends on that dealers police. Scion is supposed to offer you a "bid to buy" That is an offer in writing on your trade in that is about 7 days before it expires.
I usually tell custome that we will re apprise the car at the itme you pick it up, but it all depends on that typo of car. A Camry with 100K will not lose any value over 6 weeks and 3k miles, but a Camaro will lose 10% just because of the season change, so it all depends on which car.
Of course you DO NOT have to TRADE in the car when you ORDER the car... you're only placing a REFUNDABLE deposit, you're not FORCED in to buying a car, you're simply making a comitment to purchase a vehicle.

I would imagine a few dealers can will jump in here and give you better answers, but here's the way I see it. First of all, I don't know why it should take a dealer that long to get you a car. I had to order mine too, and they got it in 6 days. And I don't live in a big city. It's a small dealership in South Central PA. Secondly, you should seriously think about trying to sell your car yourself to a private party. You'll come out way ahead. As far as how the process should work, the dealer should order your car for a deposit (usually $500). Once your car comes in, that's when you make your trade (if you didn't already sell it) and buy the new car.

if u get your car appraised now, they will give u a trade in value, they will also give u mileage le-way. when i got my explorer appraised a week before i took delivery of my xb and the appraisal paper gave me 500 miles, after those miles the value would go down. so i say just wait till ur close to taking delivery. others have also said not to mention the trade in till u get all the other numbers worked out.

Well I would imagen a trade wouldnt matter seeing its a fixed price. As for private sale, its just to much a PITA. I would still be with out a car for 2-6 weeks, not to mention I would have to deal with making appointments, test drives and what not. I'm very buisy between work, school et al. Lastly, funny you should mention Camaro, my friend tried selling his 97 Z28, Some kid took it for a test drive with him and rear-ended someone. Of course the kid didnt have insurance and refused to pay. My friend is still trying to work the whole mess out.

Here's what we do:
You place a deposit, we order your car. We can appriase your car whenever you want to, but like was stated earlier, the appraisal is only good for 7 days or 750 miles, whichever occurs first. After that, we re-appraise the car. Most people wait until their car arrives before getting the appraisal done, but if you have some potential negative equity, I would get an idea before waiting until the last minute. Once we give a Bid-To-Buy certificate on a car, that is the trade in value. NO HAGGLING. Regardless of what has been said, if the dealer is subscribing to Scion's Pure Pricing, than you will not have to haggle over ANYTHING. Take it or leave it.
In my estimation, they are under-promising on the delivery time so that you have a realistic idea, and they have a little wiggle room to make sure they ca nget your car.
Good luck, and you'll love your new Scion.

I ordered my xA on September 22. I took deliver on it on December 10. Any way you do the math, it's a helluva wait, about 10 weeks. It had side air bags. The other items the dealer installed. I have heard on other groups that in some areas the wait is very short. I have a document that goes over the delivery and order prcess in great detail. PM me if you want it.

There is not supposed to be any haggling on Scions. If the dealer and you were actually negotiating, that violates the Scion Covenant. We do not necessarily have to use the 7-day Bid-to-Buy Certificates, but we can not negotiate a trade in value, just like we can't haggle on the price of the new car.

Can't negate on trade-in values either!?!?? Please tell me this isn't so!
Or, does that mean that you -have- to follow something like the KBB on trade-ins?

from what i understand it was just the scion price they cant change.. they went up alot on my trade in after telling them i would go somewhere else to get my xb

The Dealers do not HAVE to follow anything, they just can't dicker. So even if they offer you a $1 or 500 more than KBB.com whatever they give you is a one shot deal.
Obviously this mean is a dealer wants to be sucessfully they have the offer you the most they can everytime.

Ok, whew. My heart-rate can calm back down now. Maybe it was due to all the reading/research I've been trying to do in the past 3 week that got me cross-eyed & brain-muddled when I was reading this thread. Thanks for the clarification!

The clarification is that trade-in can not be negotiated. The only allowed change is if an outside wholesaler offers more for the car, and only once.

Oh? :?:
This is for the vehicle that a potential Scion buyer has to trade-in, and not a Scion itself to trade-in, correct?
Do all Scion dealers do this? Something down from Scion HQ?
Either way, my trade-in will be a no-haggling kbb price just the same. 8)
