JOEinSD 03-09-2009, 04:37 PM I'm learning, Don. I'm learning. Haha. DonNguyen 03-09-2009, 04:42 PM its all good...we need to go shoot sometime... i'll bring the rig Scionarra 03-09-2009, 04:45 PM lol you guys are funny... its true that it depends on what u want but i was just asking what you have urs set on as a baseline... i dunno what you guys shoot with but the nikon d200 has these banks that you can save settings on and for my outdoor bank, i have it set on 1/800th as my baseline... just a good reference for me i guess DonNguyen 03-09-2009, 04:51 PM your shutter speed should be based on what you're trying to capture... action...1/800 is great....but you don't need that for still life or other stuff... Scionarra 03-09-2009, 04:59 PM your shutter speed should be based on what you're trying to capture... action...1/800 is great....but you don't need that for still life or other stuff... yeah lately, i've been trying to work on outdoors sports so i have it at 1/800... its spring time in Chicago so there's lot goin on outside... i havent shot much still life yet but hopefully the nicer weather comes sooner to let me shoot a couple of frames Elijahtc 03-09-2009, 06:31 PM just meter every shot. No need to start at one shutter speed and then adjust from looking at it. Just look through ur viewfinder and meter the shot. dp-_- 03-09-2009, 06:57 PM prairie dogs remind me of this seahorse pic i took taken with a point and shoot through the thick assed glass in low light http://c1.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/126/l_96490225747ec280d2b27c3d1910439c.jpg Jon 03-09-2009, 08:36 PM Went to a drift event yesterday. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3637/3342449706_305ee6fc6a_o.jpg MysTiKchRis 03-09-2009, 09:00 PM your shutter speed should be based on what you're trying to capture... action...1/800 is great....but you don't need that for still life or other stuff... Wouldn't a neutral density filter help out? i just ordered one for my 10-22. its too bright outside some times so i need to bring it a couple stops down for rig shots. kiss_kiss_kill 03-09-2009, 09:36 PM Super nice shot, Jon! DonNguyen 03-09-2009, 09:38 PM your shutter speed should be based on what you're trying to capture... action...1/800 is great....but you don't need that for still life or other stuff... Wouldn't a neutral density filter help out? i just ordered one for my 10-22. its too bright outside some times so i need to bring it a couple stops down for rig shots. yes, it would help, but not everyone uses ND filters...and i forgot i even had one...lol CarbonXe 03-09-2009, 09:44 PM http://surfermag.com/photos/flash/clark_little_portfolio_shore_pounding_bliss/ Some amazing stuff here. Jon 03-09-2009, 10:02 PM Super nice shot, Jon! Thanks! It was my first time trying panning shots. DonNguyen 03-09-2009, 10:29 PM http://surfermag.com/photos/flash/clark_little_portfolio_shore_pounding_bliss/ Some amazing stuff here. clark little is good...but ryan beppu is better Elijahtc 03-09-2009, 10:31 PM ryan beppu is soo good that i've heard of him and don't know JACK bout surfing. miketf1 03-09-2009, 11:18 PM with my new 40d (thanks tcridinclean!!!) http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3614/3339687743_37048b9009.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3316/3340517604_c040e215e6.jpg definately an improvement on the XT. with the superfast 6fps mode i have a higher chance of nailing that perfect rolling shot. kiss_kiss_kill 03-09-2009, 11:19 PM HOLY CRAP, that HTM is ridin' dirty. I hope he's on air. Elijahtc 03-09-2009, 11:22 PM u do understand that 6 fps is only at a certain shutter speed and higher, right? tcridinclean 03-09-2009, 11:23 PM enjoy the camera mike! and i love riboflavin's wheels, those are prolly gonna be my next set Jon 03-09-2009, 11:28 PM I'm thinking about stepping up to a D200 or D90. I haven't decided which yet. The video feature of the D90 really doesn't appeal to me and therefore doesn't affect my decision. What do you guys think? Ro_Ja 03-09-2009, 11:28 PM HOLY CRAP, that HTM is ridin' dirty. I hope he's on air. That's miketf1's xB2, and yes it is. :D Jon 03-09-2009, 11:31 PM I hate being on the bottom of the page. :P http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3624/3342864884_2a90cd69d2_o.jpg Elijahtc 03-09-2009, 11:31 PM do it. o8tC 03-09-2009, 11:35 PM awesome shot jon! Ro_Ja 03-09-2009, 11:36 PM awesome shot jon! x2!! DonNguyen 03-09-2009, 11:43 PM I hate being on the bottom of the page. :P http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3624/3342864884_2a90cd69d2_o.jpg could use a lower shutter speed. look at the wheels... Elijahtc 03-09-2009, 11:46 PM yeah it makes it look like the back of the car is on fire. still an awesome shot of an awesome car. DonNguyen 03-09-2009, 11:48 PM no doubt its an awesome shot...just saying it could use a lower shutter speed Jon 03-09-2009, 11:49 PM Thanks for the compliments. As far as the shutter speed I tried a slower speed and then the car came out blurry. This was my time doing panning shots. DonNguyen 03-09-2009, 11:50 PM panning takes some practice...keep at it Jon 03-09-2009, 11:52 PM Not to mention the ever changing light as the clouds rolled by. I managed to get this one while the sun wasn't being blocked and could slow down the speed. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3374/3342028889_1ee5dca6a5_o.jpg Elijahtc 03-09-2009, 11:52 PM definitely great first try. DonNguyen 03-09-2009, 11:53 PM yeah....thats why sports photogs don't shoot manual...Av or Tv Elijahtc 03-09-2009, 11:57 PM yeah i'd have shot in TV cause manual would just be a nightmare. ha ha Jon 03-10-2009, 12:00 AM It was. Elijahtc 03-10-2009, 12:01 AM hope u weren't using AF too? DonNguyen 03-10-2009, 12:03 AM you mean you hope he was? this is why i love my 45 pt autofocus.... Jon 03-10-2009, 12:06 AM What's wrong with AF when panning? I tried my buddy's 2.8 lens which won't auto-focus with the D40 and trying to manual focus as fast as the cars were going seems like it would have been difficult. Elijahtc 03-10-2009, 12:11 AM yeah i meant i hope u were. My bad. Typed it while listening to a crying 3 year old that is getting on my nerves. snowromance 03-10-2009, 12:33 AM I'm thinking about stepping up to a D200 or D90. I haven't decided which yet. The video feature of the D90 really doesn't appeal to me and therefore doesn't affect my decision. What do you guys think? the D90 is solid. it's not about the video mode. it's about how clear of pictures it takes. it's right on par with the D3 and D300. i'm talking clarity. Jon 03-10-2009, 12:44 AM Yeah my friend has a D300 and his pics are so much more detailed than mine. purpled_out_tC 03-10-2009, 12:45 AM knicks ftw! i'm going to need you to not speak nonsense out of turn. LOL kiss_kiss_kill 03-10-2009, 01:05 AM ^or not speak nonsense even IN turn, right right? Don't worry girl, I gotcho back! purpled_out_tC 03-10-2009, 01:37 AM lol, thanks!! pssh, the knicks. i understand having the home team's back that's a little to far. haha, it like saying "clippers ftmfw" miketf1 03-10-2009, 01:45 AM HOLY CRAP, that HTM is ridin' dirty. I hope he's on air. that car would be me and i am on air. thats not me in the car though its just one of my lackies LOL jkjk its azndragon669 on the forums. he has a pretty sweet sw tc u do understand that 6 fps is only at a certain shutter speed and higher, right? i know that for sure but i find that this camera rebounds a bit quicker. i went out during the day and let it loose at P-mode and the 6fps mode and its funnnnnn enjoy the camera mike! and i love riboflavin's wheels, those are prolly gonna be my next set thanks sooooo much man love the camera! riboflavin certainly has pieced together an epic car.. first you get rubbed in the face that his car is epic then he goes on and owns you in starcraft. kiss_kiss_kill 03-10-2009, 01:50 AM i know that for sure but i find that this camera rebounds a bit quicker. i went out during the day and let it loose at P-mode and the 6fps mode and its funnnnnn. Don't let Edwin (P-Shooter) know. He might build a shrine of you in his closet for being one of the rare gems that use P-Mode. :silly: miketf1 03-10-2009, 01:51 AM i havent tried the D300 but i like the D90. ive tried my friends D90 once and i think its a good buy. its got good low light/high ISO grain control and it looks like the settings are easy and quick to change RnB180 03-10-2009, 03:39 AM Uhi'd still like to see an example Canon 50D ISO:1600, Exposure: 1/80, Aperture: f/2.8 http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3551/3324182332_4cfae29243.jpg its still a pretty decent photo for such a high ISO, low noise thats plenty acceptable... RnB....your issues are those with exposure, not high ISO 2.8 aperture is what I want :) I get noise compensating exposure for shutter speed at narrow aperture. Yes it's more exposure howeverall the high ISO shots are low shutter speeds. I can't see in detail with the noise because imviewing this on my iPhone. I have a low tolerance for noise. Scionarra 03-10-2009, 03:45 AM I'm thinking about stepping up to a D200 or D90. I haven't decided which yet. The video feature of the D90 really doesn't appeal to me and therefore doesn't affect my decision. What do you guys think? if u dont care about the video feature too much, go with the d200... best buy is trying to get rid of their remaining d200 bodies and theyre selling them 600 brand new... you would be happier bc its a mid-level dslr for the price of the d60 bodies... snowromance 03-10-2009, 03:51 AM wow that is a good deal on a brand new D200. another good thing about the D200 is the construction. I'm not sure exactly what it is made of but i know it isn't plastic like the smaller D40/60/80 etc... the body is SOLID. djafropiq 03-10-2009, 06:24 AM i too was stuck being the d200 or the d90 but i went with the d90 simply because it is newer technology than the d200.. but if money is an issue.. you cannot top the price of the d200 no doubt.. andino 03-10-2009, 08:22 AM I say pick up the D90 if you're planning to shoot more low light stuff and D200 if you're going to shoot with a fast lens. The D200 has a good sensor but it lacks in the low light department. I went from a D40 to D80 to D300 and the D80 has the same sensor as the D200 and it was awesome in normal lighting conditions. But anything above ISO800 or 1000 and it would be super grainy. I shoot ISO3200 with my D300 and the noise level makes it so the photo is still usable. I posted some shots a few pages back of my Ramen noodles and Cali rolls from a restaurant I ate at with some friends and the photo still came out nice. ippskidder 03-10-2009, 02:26 PM Ok n00b alert >.< lol I've been looking at some cameras. I'm still unsure whether to get a cannon or nikon. My budget is about 900. It'll mostly be for daytime shots, and stationary objects. But would LOVE (x100) to take pictures of some fast moving objects, prefferably cars ^^ Night shots... ehhh not to many of those. Maybe of fireworks and cars that look like xmas trees, but thats about it. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Elijahtc 03-10-2009, 02:31 PM canon xsi and buy urself an extra battery, uv filter, circular polarizer, and a good CF memory card (lexar or sandisk extreme). That should pretty much get u started for a good while. goingcarcrazy 03-10-2009, 02:35 PM A few random bird shots since the birds are returning or passing through. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3558/3334101197_659b749b7f.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3648/3343256802_a2376bb131.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3302/3340350562_906333e682.jpg ippskidder 03-10-2009, 02:43 PM canon xsi and buy urself an extra battery, uv filter, circular polarizer, and a good CF memory card (lexar or sandisk extreme). What would be a good website to get the extra battery, UV filter and the Circular polarizer? goingcarcrazy 03-10-2009, 02:50 PM canon xsi and buy urself an extra battery, uv filter, circular polarizer, and a good CF memory card (lexar or sandisk extreme). What would be a good website to get the extra battery, UV filter and the Circular polarizer? Go to some place like Photography-on-the.net and go to the buy/sell forum. There's a lot of trustworthy people there that sell all sorts of stuff, including batteries (got my extra battery for $25, original OEM canon battery too, brand new), and filters come and go ALL the time, although some sizes seem less sold than others (58mm is fairly common as well at 77mm). If you don't want to do the forum route, I would say check out B&H photo/video. ippskidder 03-10-2009, 02:56 PM canon xsi and buy urself an extra battery, uv filter, circular polarizer, and a good CF memory card (lexar or sandisk extreme). That should pretty much get u started for a good while. canon's are a good camera too... i just found nikons to be easier to use for me... but when it comes to p&s cameras, i always go canon NYNCTC 03-10-2009, 04:19 PM knicks ftw! i'm going to need you to not speak nonsense out of turn. LOL ^or not speak nonsense even IN turn, right right? Don't worry girl, I gotcho back! oh man im not sure if i can stand up to the both of you. plus, the knicks are going to win the championship (one day  )... haha enough basketball and back to photos. i can post any of mine becasue this isnt my computer :tap: but once mine is fixed, ill have a bunch to post. That was horrible. rosedaleny806 03-10-2009, 04:46 PM Nice pictures by the way =D thats what she said FAIL FAIL & MORE FAIL. I can haz wun in 5 minz if I wanted, but DO NAHT WAHNT (right now). btw, ur a homo. rosedaleny806 03-10-2009, 04:53 PM mah burritos was the shiznit. dont hate. u can haz one but chances are ull have to go to work/skool for 18 plus hrs :P  A$S kiss_kiss_kill 03-10-2009, 04:55 PM I just got to work from school D; rosedaleny806 03-10-2009, 04:57 PM "checkmate" "wat does that mean" CarbonXe 03-10-2009, 05:28 PM Nice pictures by the way =D thats what she said That was horrible. Maybe of fireworks and cars that look like xmas trees, but thats about it. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. id say try both company out, Nikon and Canon. See what you like, feel what you like. Play with all the buttons and Menus, then go from there. For your budget, you can easily get a D90 or XSI. check a few pages back I posted my own noise test to see how much noise it gets when you crank up the ISO. if your willing to drive to B&H, do it. great place to try cameras out. but if ur far, check with your local Ritz. I personally picked Nikon due to ease of use but I would pick Canon for their HD Camcorder. I have been eyeing out their HV20 or HV21 model and attached a Letus 35 on it and call it a day. :) rosedaleny806 03-10-2009, 05:29 PM better  Jon 03-10-2009, 05:32 PM wow that is a good deal on a brand new D200. another good thing about the D200 is the construction. I'm not sure exactly what it is made of but i know it isn't plastic like the smaller D40/60/80 etc... the body is SOLID. Yeah that is a good price. However, I've been reading up on the features of both. The D200 has a metal body, but the D90 has the CMOS sensor from the D300 which is really appealing. The D200 has ISO100 ability but the D90 performs well even at ISO3200 and has a better LCD screen. The D90 is 12mp whereas the D200 is 10mp. I'm leaning toward the D90. rosedaleny806 03-10-2009, 05:34 PM knicks ftw! lol scion_jon 03-10-2009, 06:38 PM idk what to take pictures of anymore..... goingcarcrazy 03-10-2009, 06:43 PM As hippie as this may sound, go take nature shots. There's state parks, national parks, state forests, etc EVERYWHERE! Either that or get a macro setup (lens+extension tubes) and explore the small world. You can't have a super long tube other wise the focal point will theoretically be INSIDE the lens, but hey, it's rpetty amazing. If you're a canon shooter, just go get the 65mm MP-E...that's a GREAT macro lens. Just make sure you've got a lot of light. dave2610 03-10-2009, 09:18 PM First time posting pics here let me know what you think. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3613/3345224180_d113e22705.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3375/3344394667_9548ea1df9.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3324/3345227940_9fe6431432.jpg kiss_kiss_kill 03-10-2009, 09:24 PM First time posting pics here let me know what you think. Jon 03-11-2009, 08:02 PM I would guess Photomatix or Topaz Adjust. CarbonXe 03-11-2009, 08:05 PM It's not a true HDR, it's just edited in a similar manor. dodaddy 03-11-2009, 08:08 PM with Photomatrix you can use one raw image instead of multiple images with different lightings to create the HDR effect CarbonXe 03-11-2009, 08:11 PM Yea, but doing yields different results. That's why the tree line is really light directly above it. Without having the proper under/over exposed shots, it can't process it properly. It works, but it's not as effective. RnB180 03-14-2009, 12:03 AM What're the best settings to get silhouette shots like that? there are really no best settings, it depends on the the amount of light in the background, so settings will vary depending on the environment. generally speaking, you would want a narrow aperture, disable flash and high shutter speed for the freeze frame. than you'd adjust your iso sensitivity according to the amount of light you want in the image. the narrow aperture like f8-11 ish or even higher number with no flash will make sure the forground will be nice and dark while the background will still be in focus. btw make sure you shoot shots like this in RAW, definitely the biggest benefit for a shot like this because you'd have a lot more flexibility with black levels. kiss_kiss_kill 03-14-2009, 12:09 AM Awesome! Elijahtc 03-15-2009, 09:06 PM Roja, nice shots. Nuggets needs to get on and post his. Edwin, it's not that there aren't places to take photos. It's the fact they are the ghetto type places u don't wanna go into with $4,000 worth of stuff strapped to ur back without a police officer with u. LITERALLY! NYNCTC 03-15-2009, 10:55 PM TRIPOD TRIPOD TRIPOD, and LOW ISO. like 50 or 100. thanks i figured as much. what about the f/stop and the shutter speed? Elijahtc 03-15-2009, 11:24 PM just meter once u get there. Use TV mode. It will let u control the shutter speed and the camera will figure out the aperture. That means u can set the shutter speed to as slow as u want and the camera worries bout the rest.
