i dunno what you guys shoot with but the nikon d200 has these banks that you can save settings on and for my outdoor bank, i have it set on 1/800th as my baseline... just a good reference for me i guess

yeah lately, i've been trying to work on outdoors sports so i have it at 1/800... its spring time in Chicago so there's lot goin on outside...

i havent shot much still life yet but hopefully the nicer weather comes sooner to let me shoot a couple of frames

just meter every shot. No need to start at one shutter speed and then adjust from looking at it. Just look through ur viewfinder and meter the shot.

yes, it would help, but not everyone uses ND filters...and i forgot i even had one...lol

definately an improvement on the XT. with the superfast 6fps mode i have a higher chance of nailing that perfect rolling shot.

Thanks for the compliments. As far as the shutter speed I tried a slower speed and then the car came out blurry. This was my time doing panning shots.

panning takes some practice...keep at it

Not to mention the ever changing light as the clouds rolled by. I managed to get this one while the sun wasn't being blocked and could slow down the speed.

What's wrong with AF when panning? I tried my buddy's 2.8 lens which won't auto-focus with the D40 and trying to manual focus as fast as the cars were going seems like it would have been difficult.

the D90 is solid. it's not about the video mode. it's about how clear of pictures it takes. it's right on par with the D3 and D300. i'm talking clarity.

i havent tried the D300 but i like the D90. ive tried my friends D90 once and i think its a good buy. its got good low light/high ISO grain control and it looks like the settings are easy and quick to change

its still a pretty decent photo for such a high ISO, low noise

thats plenty acceptable...

RnB....your issues are those with exposure, not high ISO

2.8 aperture is what I want :)
I get noise compensating exposure for shutter speed at narrow aperture. Yes it's more exposure howeverall the high ISO shots are low shutter speeds. I can't see in detail with the noise because imviewing this on my iPhone. I have a low tolerance for noise.

if u dont care about the video feature too much, go with the d200... best buy is trying to get rid of their remaining d200 bodies and theyre selling them 600 brand new...

you would be happier bc its a mid-level dslr for the price of the d60 bodies...

wow that is a good deal on a brand new D200. another good thing about the D200 is the construction. I'm not sure exactly what it is made of but i know it isn't plastic like the smaller D40/60/80 etc... the body is SOLID.

i too was stuck being the d200 or the d90 but i went with the d90 simply because it is newer technology than the d200.. but if money is an issue.. you cannot top the price of the d200 no doubt..

I say pick up the D90 if you're planning to shoot more low light stuff and D200 if you're going to shoot with a fast lens. The D200 has a good sensor but it lacks in the low light department. I went from a D40 to D80 to D300 and the D80 has the same sensor as the D200 and it was awesome in normal lighting conditions. But anything above ISO800 or 1000 and it would be super grainy. I shoot ISO3200 with my D300 and the noise level makes it so the photo is still usable. I posted some shots a few pages back of my Ramen noodles and Cali rolls from a restaurant I ate at with some friends and the photo still came out nice.

It'll mostly be for daytime shots, and stationary objects. But would LOVE (x100) to take pictures of some fast moving objects, prefferably cars ^^

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

id say try both company out, Nikon and Canon. See what you like, feel what you like. Play with all the buttons and Menus, then go from there. For your budget, you can easily get a D90 or XSI. check a few pages back I posted my own noise test to see how much noise it gets when you crank up the ISO. if your willing to drive to B&H, do it. great place to try cameras out. but if ur far, check with your local Ritz. I personally picked Nikon due to ease of use but I would pick Canon for their HD Camcorder. I have been eyeing out their HV20 or HV21 model and attached a Letus 35 on it and call it a day. :)

Yeah that is a good price. However, I've been reading up on the features of both. The D200 has a metal body, but the D90 has the CMOS sensor from the D300 which is really appealing. The D200 has ISO100 ability but the D90 performs well even at ISO3200 and has a better LCD screen. The D90 is 12mp whereas the D200 is 10mp. I'm leaning toward the D90. :crazy:

As hippie as this may sound, go take nature shots. There's state parks, national parks, state forests, etc EVERYWHERE! Either that or get a macro setup (lens+extension tubes) and explore the small world. Every time I take a pic of a bug, I'm amazed at what comes out of it.

ahh, thats just it, I have that setup WITH tubes. You can't have a super long tube other wise the focal point will theoretically be INSIDE the lens, but hey, it's rpetty amazing. If you're a canon shooter, just go get the 65mm MP-E...that's a GREAT macro lens. Just make sure you've got a lot of light.

no, no snoot on this one. just a plain old 1 LED powered flashlight... its the one that you press a button then the LED flips and turns on... luckily it was white LED. if you have access to those cheap LED light keychain, that will work too, but you have to find a white one. ill take some pics of that flashlight im talking about later.

it was supposed to be a rolling shot but i had the wrong ISO and F stop on cause my friend handed me my camera and he adjusted it earlier without letting me know, so it came out as a still shot lol.

I would guess Photomatix or Topaz Adjust.

It's not a true HDR, it's just edited in a similar manor.

with Photomatrix you can use one raw image instead of multiple images with different lightings to create the HDR effect

Yea, but doing yields different results. That's why the tree line is really light directly above it. Without having the proper under/over exposed shots, it can't process it properly. It works, but it's not as effective.

yeah u can ALWAYS tell a fake HDR when u see one.

What're the best settings to get silhouette shots like that?

there are really no best settings, it depends on the the amount of light in the background, so settings will vary depending on the environment.

generally speaking, you would want a narrow aperture, disable flash and high shutter speed for the freeze frame. than you'd adjust your iso sensitivity according to the amount of light you want in the image. the narrow aperture like f8-11 ish or even higher number with no flash will make sure the forground will be nice and dark while the background will still be in focus.

btw make sure you shoot shots like this in RAW, definitely the biggest benefit for a shot like this because you'd have a lot more flexibility with black levels.

I'm so disappointed at the last shot. Don't know why, but all my shots were coming out blurry when I was trying to shoot the wind surfers. I was using aperture priority, shooting at f/22, shutter speed of 1/80...was I shooting too slow? Even the 1/200 shots seem pretty blurry.

I figured that's what it was. I know when I go to races, 1/200-1/250 is usually the sweet spot, but didn't think 1/80-1/200 would be too slow.

panning is one thing which is fine for motor sports, but not when you wanna freeze the frame

Well to freeze the frame, I usually just go for 1/1000 or faster. But I've noticed that 1/200-1/250 is fast enough to freeze the vehicle, but not fast enough to freeze the wheels.

thanks i figured as much. what about the f/stop and the shutter speed?

just meter once u get there. Use TV mode. It will let u control the shutter speed and the camera will figure out the aperture. That means u can set the shutter speed to as slow as u want and the camera worries bout the rest.
