yeah i want a flash sooo bad. my 5d doesn't even have a built in flash. kinda sucks but an on board flash is so crappy anyways that i would rather just get a regular hot shoe flash.

All the pics you guys took look professional! Does the camera really make that big of a difference compared to a regular point-and-shoot camera? I know it depends on the photographer, but you guys make it look so easy with your DSLRs.

DSLR's let u have WAY more control over the variables. U still have to know the techniques and fundamentals. Every picture has a rule/technique behind it.

Is there a site that'll help first time users get to know the rules/techniques? I'm really interested in getting a DSLR now.

u can find a lot of books, ask people on here, or just type in something bout it on GOOGLE and see what comes up.

ok so now because of this thread i have been looking to get an slr camera and i have been looking at the d40 since its affordable..but i wanted to know what type of lense to get that is good and affordable too..like 100-150 $ lense?

You can't find lenses in that price range! The absolute cheapest lens that Canon makes is $85, and it's incredibly basic. My next cheapest lens I believe is my macro lens & that one was $250.

The D40 is a great choice. My friend has one and he enjoys it a lot. It comes with the 18-55mm I believe, and that's a pretty good lens right out of the box, so I would either get a telephoto (something like a 50-200mm) or a fixed 50m one. Tina's right though. You can't get a cheap lens. Just save up.

i feel ya, depending on where in cali you're from that's definetly the case. i knew more mexican and filipino cats than blacks--and whites, yeah they were hard to come by. but i grew up next to the border in a military city. parents opted not to stay in "the hood", which i appreciate. lol

Thanks guys. The first 3 pix were from Oahu, taken with 18-135 kit lense w/ Moose's filter on my D40. Last pic was with the 18-200VR lense on same camera. All shots were done in the easy P-Mode.

I'd like to see more settings though. I can check the settings of almost everyones shots (Camera type, focal length, f-stop, shutter speed) on my Mac, but sometimes after pics get compressed then hosted again somewhere...some info is lost.

One thing I REALLY need to learn is photoshop. All my shots are straight from the camera with no post processing at all other than downsizing the files for viewing on here.

I had to use my friend's dad's Nikon D100 tonight at Hot Import Nights because I left my camera at college and no offense to the Nikon owners, but I hated it. I had no clue how to use that thing. It was confusing as hell to figure out. Everything was coming out horribly. I tried shooting on automatic mode and that didn't help at all either. I love my Canon sooo much better. LOL

I see all the rich high school kids around here with D40's. ALWAYS on the auto setting... what's the point in getting a DSLR?

Manual mode was near impossible to figure out. The D100 was not a very user-friendly camera at all.

Ok everybody try to remember and post up the specs from every shot. Lens, body, f stop, shutter speed, etc. Also try and tell how u set up the shot and any story behind it. That way u can kinda tell how u took the shot and how u set it up so that other shooters might be able to take some advice/knowledge from it. Like I said before, every shot has a technique behind it, so if we tell how we got the shot then we can show others how to take that same type of image and they can learn just that much faster.

I had never used a Nikon before, so I was trying to figure out the manual mode settings (which was near impossible) and I snapped this picture. Plus, the lens on the camera was a biscuit to use (24-120) at the event.

my main technique, probably the same for a lot of others, is slow shutter speed, no flash, and ALWAYS a tripod. also, i use a 2 sec. timer to take the picture so im not touching the camera when it snaps the photo.

that timer tip is a good one. i'm curious as to how many of you are photographers, in a photography class or just self-taught yourself photography; just out of plain curiousity.

pickle, i love the shots you just posted esp. the cemetery and train shot. i'd love to see the colors of all of them though for g.p.

I'm self-taught. I just started playing with my camera right out of the box. I never even opened the manual. lol I did take one photography class in high school, but I didn't get anything out of it. I'm going to try a photography class at my college next semester, so I hope that goes over better for me.

im self taught as well... started playing with settings and such on the camera. never taken a class or anything, but i would like to.

purpled: i dont have any colors of the black and whites, they were taken in black and white mode on the camera. they always seem to come out better than taking them in color and then changing them to b&w on the computer. those were all taken out in the woods a little bit outside of olympia, wa. the train photo was taken on the puget sound at a small city park.

a little story about the cemetery one... that was taken at my grandpas memorial service, and i dont think my grandma even knew i was taking the photo. unfortunately, the lighting came out kind of goofy, but its still an amazing photo. would probably look great in b&w too, hehe.

What kiils most of my shots is I know nothing bout photoshop so there is no post processing done on my shots. Which can easily ruin a photo. All my work is straight from the camera so if some variable isn't right I can't fix it in post processing.

i dont do any post processing at all, thats how they come right out of the camera. they only thing i might do, is remove red-eye should any happen to show up.

i only use photoshop and Photomatix to do HDRs...i also edit my photos in flickr

from what i can remember specs on this are:
iso 60
shutter speed 1.0"
f2.8 (i think)
tripod was used and a MUST when taking photos at night

so um yeah, i am thinking of selling my Canon 5d body so i can upgrade to the 5d mark II

hmmm...you one of those gear junkies that feel that having the newest bodies is going to make you a better photographer? not trying to be a prick, just asking.

I still shoot with a Canon 20D. Then again, I finally feel it's time to upgrade after 4 years of using the 20D....So I'm moving to the 50D (http://www.dpreview.com/previews/canoneos50d/). Then I probably won't upgrade for a while after that. Moving from 8MP to 15MP should keep me happy.

i say as long as i get a full frame dslr that would be my last body unless something goes wrong or it gets crazily outdated

Mostly because of the new intergrated image sensor cleaner. The fact that it shoots faster with a better processor helps too. Or the fact that it shoots small amounts of HD video doesn't hurt either.

I love my 5d but cleaning it gets old big time. That's bout the only downfall of this body. Which is something they changed on the mark II. With the mark II they actually listened to the photographers and made the changes. Only thing I wish they wouldve done is made it shoot at at least 5 fps. (I shoot freestyle bmx)

oh yeah on the sensor cleaning thingy lol, plus the 5d screen isnt that great i've heard.. i guess the 5d is getting old haha

There are a lot of tutorials online to learn from. PLUS just messing around and trying different stuff will do wonders for you.

I actually don't shoot in RAW, but I could easily find out. Are you using PC or Mac for editing?

He's using a PC, I'm 99% sure. He's not technologically advanced enough to be able to own and operate a mac.

So true. I've used Elements for years before actually owning Photoshop. To me, they're very similar. It offers much of the same features for a fraction of the price.

I got the Teachers Edition for CS3 with the video tutorials and everything.. Just wish I could find the time to actual watch a video..

the 50 f/1.8 isnt that bad its like $100 prolly 80ish used.

I can't for the life of me figure out settings for a good night shot. I went to the circus AND a concert this weekend & all my shots came out like crap. :(

What lenses do you have? You're going to need a high (low # w/e the hell it is lol) aperture lens, or a lens with some kind of vibration assist (it helps a lot). Any shutter speed slower than 1/20 sec and you're going to have a blurry shot. You could bump up the ISO to compensate for the lack of light, but you're going to get some noise.

I tried to tell Tina that she needed a tripod, to set the ISO high (800-1600), set a lower shutter speed, and set a medium aperture (like 4).

Oh yeah, also try to avoid having to zoom in. Zooming will automatically reduce the maximum aperture, resulting in less light, resulting in lower shutter speed, increasing the chance of blur.

I shot in 1600 but it was still too dark. I tried all kinds of different shutter speeds & F-stops and still failed miserably.

Robert, lesson this weekend, please! haha. Did you get the 50mm f/1.8 lens? If not, come out this weekend and get it, or maybe Thursday or Friday? I should be free around 5:30ish.

There's the problem then. I just used my stock lens for the concert shoot since I wasn't in the front row & was zoomed in all the way. I used my 28mm f/2.8 lens for the circus & those came out even worse. =/

that 28mm 2.8 should have let a pretty darn decent amount of light in. especially if ur running a 1600 iso. make sure u take off any polarizers if u have one on. they will cause like -2 stops of light coming in.

Then there's another problem. My UV filter was on. =/

I guess I should look at the circus pics on an actual computer though. I haven't even uploaded them yet.

I need a GOOD or at least decent zoom lens. Perhaps with my next paycheck.

Any suggestions that won't break the bank?

heck i have a 24-105mm f4 L lens and i can get dark/night shots. The UV filter should be ok. i was talking bout a polarizer filter. (looks like tinted glass) Show us some of the pics that u say aren't that good. prolly just need a tripod.

Okay, I'll upload some tonight. For the first time I don't have my camera with me.

For night shots, without a tripod, keep the aperture # as low as possible, that way you can let in as much light as possible. I never fully understood f-stop until I got my 50mm f1.8 lens. By actually seeing the difference in size, I got a much better grasp on how it worked.

The opening is dramatically larger, allowing more light to be pulled in. With this extra amount of light, the shutter doesn't need to be closed (open? dunno how it technically works) as long. Think of aperture as 'how MUCH light' and shutter speed is obviously 'how LONG'.

SOmething to remember with aperture settings. A high aperture, in the 1.4-3.0 range will make it so you can take pictures on a darker setting but there is a huge disadvantage as well. DOF (depth of field)
Taking pictures at 1.8 gives an awesome effect for a portrait, but taking a picture of anything that isnt flat will cause part of the object to OOF (out of focus). This can happen with portraits as well. If the face is even slightly turned, one eye will be slightly OOF due to the DOF.

As you can see there is a difference in focuse in the span of mere inches.
Due to this you do not want to just lower your raise your aperture, just to allow for a brighter picture. Imagine this effect on a car which is FEET long!!! (I see this this in alot of pictures posted in here, headlight in focus, taillight not)

You can try the battery test out, most people use three batteries, put them at a slight angel so they are different lengths apart and see just how far you need to adjust your aperture to get the DOF you want!!

^ I honestly didn't know that. I thought the insane OOF blur I got with my f1.8 was because it was a manual focus lens.

also with depth of field, the farther ur back ground is from ur subject the more out of focus ur back ground is gonna be. but if the background is close enough it will be in focus too. so if u want the background to be out of focus more, just put some space between ur background and the subject.

Hopefully if i land this new job that pays about 40% more of what im getting now. ill get it. Kinda hard finding spending money when saving for a house.
