key fill backlight.
backlight is not really necessary, that if you have a strobe large/powerful enough for a subject like a car.
key and fill can be obtained with either two strobes or one strobe and a reflector.

the pic looks in focus to me, It just looks like the resolving power isn't as high as what you're probably used to elijah, your 5D and L glass is a force to be reckoned with in terms of sharpness haha

Slight smart sharpen in PS should help some of the soft edges.

There is slight CA on the left edge of the car that may need to be touched up and the lights seem to be set a bit high, causing heavy shadows in the headlights and and front bumper and only lighting up the part of the hood and some of the bumper.

I think if you are going to do the fade to black thing, possibly have the front more lit and gradual fade from front to back may have more impact? But this is just a suggestion, in the end its up to you and your own style.

possibly lowering the position of the light source may have helped?

really? to me in looks like its in focus but the original image was cropped and resized so the edges look softer.

it may be the shadows hitting the white of car? idk, but my first thought was that looks OOF.

the exif data is stripped, so I can't see what the aperture was set at, from the photo it looks like the aperture may have been a bit too wide and iso to high, which resulted in the softness to the edges. Not to mention a crop and resize...

the shadows look soft because it looks like the lighting was diffused, from the patterns of the shadow it looks like two diffused strobes were used overhead camera left and camera right, maybe around 5 feet off the ground?

Chris, I know critiques are tough, that is the reason why I don't bother posting photo's in this thread either because I don't need to hear it hahahah

altogether, my sincerest apologies, I meant my critique to be constructive not destructive. If anything, possibly a a reflector directly in front of the car on the ground to help out a bit?

RnB180
05-18-2009, 10:22 PM
if your batteries are low, then you'd need to wait for the flash to recharge a few seconds.

or as mentioned earlier it can be misfires.

I used a 580 and 430 last week for a few hundred portraits with the st e2
and those flashes fired one after another, I was surprised. I took like a 7 shots in succession like a 70 times and it fired every time, not one misfire or ettl miscommunication.

This was indoors however, when I use these outdoors, I have be aware of of which way the sensors are pointing.

going from an XS to a 20D is certainly not an upgrade. If you can swing it, use the cash from the XS and add a bit more to get a 40D. Crazily enough the 20D has LESS accurate AF than your XS, as well as slower AF speed, less MP, less pixel density, etc, etc, etc. Just my .02

i read about the less accurate AF, but didnt understand why and seemed to me like a problem in only a few (like a glitch in the manufacturing). Less MP isnt a big deal, as nothing i shoot gets blown up to full size.

I did read an article comparing the XT to the 20D, but is my XS better than the XT?

What i do like is the up in ISO, the ability to shoot better in low light and the added fps.

So what do yall think. It is a great deal, and possibly have a buyer for my XS if i go through with it.

Also, E, i shoot alot of auto event and having the higher fps and the ability to shoot more shots at a time will help. i could keep my XS also, that is how tempting this price is.

So, help?

Elijahtc
05-19-2009, 04:45 PM
i would rather u get both bodies. use the 20d when u need the speed but XS when u need the quality.

goingcarcrazy
05-19-2009, 04:47 PM
what is the price?

Either way, the XS is a full 2 generations better than the XT, instead of Digic II it has Digic IV, its has 10mp instead of...was it 8? it has the XTi's (if not the XSi's) auto focus, and the fact that you shoot racing, you wouldn't want a slower, less accurate AF. As I said, if you can swing it, you can generally pic up a used 40D for 600-700 depending on what it comes with so if you can swing that, I think you'll be much happier!

Hopefully things will get better for me shortly. I found an awesome deal on a 50D yesterday that I just could not pass up, so that's in the mail and will here soon!

As far as pics go, I've totally forgotten if I posted these in the past, but here they are:

I use a 50D.
50D ftw!
make sure you firmware is 1.0.6 in the camera body, if it isn't.. update it,
the new firmware improves high iso performance, by removing vertical banding at isos above 800.

what lenses are you going to use with it?
what camera body were you using prior?

Will do, Firmware will be the first thing I check. As far as lenses go, I have a tack sharp 17-55IS, 100mm macro, 100-400L, 70-200L f4 non-IS, and 50mm 1.8 MKI. I'm going to be selling my MP-E unfortunately, as well as my XSi (which is what I was using before), to gain the funds to pay for the camera.

I just can't see dropping 600 more into takin pics of bugs (I need the MT-24 twin light flash in order to make this lens REALLY shine). But yeah, I'm thinking the 50D's features will help a LOT with other things, especially the AF on it.

NYNCTC
05-22-2009, 02:55 PM
ya i mean, if you take nothing but bug pictures then maybe you should have not, but since you take sweet air pictures and others, the 50D is more versatile.

05-22-2009, 07:58 PM
there is a very extensive explanation with the firmware download. I used the cf card method.

Ive updated my 50D twice, and the current firmware made the most dramatic difference.

Now if I could only justify a 5D mark ii purchase.... ><
till than the 50d has been serving me nicely, So won't drop the coin til it's absolutely necessary.

hopefully by the time im required to get one, a successor will be out or the a new version of the 1D.

after reading on POTN, i have come to the conclusion that the difference btw the 17-50 and the 17-55IS is the IS and the USM as well as the better DOF at 2.8 and much faster AF for the Canon. I of course do nothing that needs the better features like wedding and or portraits or low light shoots. so saving myself almost 700 is a plus that the Tamaron has. The reason i am asking this is that i want to upgrade my mid range lens. The 18-55 isnt cutting it for me.

Quick question guys, I'm getting ready to get a DSLR camera very very soon and I've looked into a few options. Price is not really an issue, but it's my first DSLR.

I've looked at getting either the Canon T1I or the Nikon d5000 (Leaning towards Canon on this comparison).

Or the next would be the Canon 50d vs Nikon d90 (no favorite here, have video option though on the Nikon is good)

What does everyone think I should get for my first dslr? I also compared the Canon T1I vs the Nikon D90 but it appears this is unfair and the Nikon wins. Any opinions on what I should get / consider / opinions. I want to make a good choice and get an all around good dslr.

forget the D5000. find a used D40 to learn with. you can get them for like $300. will take just as nice of photos. i know you say price doesn't matter but i would still get the D40 to start with. unless you want canon... i don't like canon personally so i have zero experience with them except i don't like how they feel in your hand compared to the Nikons.

anyhow, before you plunge into the sigma lens, you should also try the canon L version too. And make an judement of which one is better.

I hear that the sigmas tend to have yellow tint on their lenses that must be corrected via PP.

Air Runner's valves are weird. If the tank isn't running and/or full, & you go to raise the car, it drops it instead, or something. I have a short somewhere & my battery is jacked right now, & sometimes my air will kick on & sometimes it won't. I didn't wanna drop the car & risk not being able to fill the tank again. So I didn't drop it just to be safe. I'll do another shoot soon though & figure out where the short is, so once it's taken care of, I'll be dropped more.

I like no color better, the color just makes everything look like mud and considerable amount of sharpness is lost.

the no color has a nice stark contrast.

I agree. I just wanted to see what the photos looked like in color.

The first set of photos are not necessarily black and white, they're just heavily desaturated while the color example has boosted saturation.

The desaturated images look nice with the that last one being my favorite. That one seems the most similar to what you'd normally see in a magazine spread.

the person you had take the photos has a very good understanding of post work. all the photos look very clean.

i am in the same color vs. black/white dillema. when your car is white and black it just seems to take away from the subject of the photo when everything else is in color. almost all of my photos of the box are black/white because when im processing in lightroom and hit grayscale they always look better than the color versions.

and yes pretty car/pretty lady. nice.

Blckd, not digging how the post processing washed out the rocks in front of the waterfall. The 2nd shot is kinda cool tho.

how would an ND filter help the waterfall? He's not using wide aperture anyway.

yeah i made the big mistake of going in the middle of a sunny day...was bored out of my mind. i spent a while trying to edit that one cause it was the only one where the exposure really came out right, except for the rocks.

i need to go back on an overcast or cloudy day,

yeah the only filters i have are a CP which i had on there, and a UV which is on it when the CP is not, basically for protection purposes

Elijahtc

i keep my UV on at ALL times. The CPL filter prolly helped u a little bit cause it stops light down a stop or two.

neutral density filters limit the amount of light entering the lens altogether, not just parts of the images in the resulting composition. Are you inferring that ND filters selectively effects only portions of the image? if that is what you are stating then you are incorrect.

I can only see if him using this if silk water effect was intended, then he'd need and extremely slow shutter speed on a tripod at an aperture above f22

this has nothing to do with the over exposed rocks.

i think what he is saying is that it would've allowed him to use a slower shutter speed to get the effect of the water and cut down some of the light on the rocks. i am sure he knows it isn't selective. NOW THAT would be a cool filter. ha ha I want a gradient ND.

you'd use an ND filter for silk water photos, but Jon, specifically stated that an ND filter will correctly expose the rocks and not affect the waterfall.

this has to do with proper exposure and lighting not the long shutter/silk water.

its also out of stock. I mean how low do think this will go, it is one of the greatest lens and holds value very well. 600 new and i am getting it for 475 used, and barely used, i think i am getting a deal. i think 450 may be better, but you know, i think i am ok with the extra 25, but ill try and lower it some more.

Apparently I missed something NYNCTC, didn't know you were getting one. I promise you you will fall in love with the lens. I've only used mine once because I usually take my 100-400 out and shoot with it for birds etc, but for the life of me, I just CAN'T get myself to sell my 70-200 since its just so blasted sharp! You'll love yours, whatever price you get it at.
