Even I have more than that & I think I'm broke, but I'm not too far off from $90. =/ Yeah, I threw a ton of money at some cards the other week, not realizing I had some bills coming up :nails: . Oh well, I've got 3 paychecks coming and a bonus on the way, all before anymore bills are due. I'll have a good 3k in the bank by the end of the month :D. I think it's time to pick up some filters and maybe some hoods. Does anyone have any recommendations on them? I know I should pick up a UV filter, but how about hoods? Are they really worth it? I have one for my zoom lens, but haven't really noticed a difference. I might even pick up a 24mm f2.8. I could use a basic wide angle lens :ponder: Ro_Ja 09-30-2008, 05:32 AM $90?! Even I have more than that & I think I'm broke, but I'm not too far off from $90. =/ I think it's time to pick up some filters and maybe some hoods. Does anyone have any recommendations on them? I know I should pick up a UV filter, but how about hoods? Are they really worth it? I have one for my zoom lens, but haven't really noticed a difference. I have the same question. I've asked some people, but never got a real answer. Hoods aren't exactly inexpensive either, so I want to know if I'm actually dropping cash on something that actually has a purpose. Edwin said he likes them because if you're shooting something moving and you bump your lens into another person's camera, it's just the hood that gets hit and not the lens itself. CarbonXe 09-30-2008, 05:42 AM Well my zoom lens came with it...I just leave it on because it makes the lens look bigger . I have another question regarding wide-angle lenses. I have an 18mm-55mm lens, so if I get a 24mm WA lens, would there be any actual difference between setting the focal range to 24mm on the zoom lens and the wide angle lens? I made that more confusing than I needed to. Basically, if I take the EXACT same shot with the zoom and WA lenses, will they ultimately be the same? I never used a WA lens :(. Ro_Ja 09-30-2008, 05:49 AM Well my zoom lens came with it...I just leave it on because it makes the lens look bigger . hahah People always stare when you have a DSLR with a zoom lens and a hood. It automatically gives the impression that you're some sort of professional photographer. ADRdesignCo 09-30-2008, 05:59 AM Well my zoom lens came with it...I just leave it on because it makes the lens look bigger . I do the same thing, the hood (on my 2.8) just makes it look that much cooler imo, but if its either of my walk around lenses i usually dont have a hood. as for the wide angle (anyone feel free to correct me on this) but they should visually be the same (what you see through the hole). i could imagine the only diffrence would be is that if it is sharp, its aperture (specified lenses usually have alot lower apertures than zoom), etc. that would make it diffrent. Nick06tC 09-30-2008, 08:24 AM A lens hood should be used to reduce flare and to a degree hot spots caused by it. Its also good to have because it protects the lens face glass even more. Drop the lens, break the hood not the front ring!!! Only time not to use it is when you use the on board flash. If you use it then, you will have bad shadows. Nick06tC 09-30-2008, 08:26 AM oh but the longer the hood make sure its wider or you will have BAD vignetting, which I think looks horrible!! CarbonXe 09-30-2008, 12:14 PM oh but the longer the hood make sure its wider or you will have BAD vignetting, which I think looks horrible!! The hood I have on my zoom lens is pretty big, but I've never seen any vignetting. I'm guessing as long as you use the intended hood, you should be fine. kiss_kiss_kill 09-30-2008, 04:00 PM $90?! Even I have more than that & I think I'm broke, but I'm not too far off from $90. =/ Yeah, I threw a ton of money at some cards the other week, not realizing I had some bills coming up :nails: . I have one for my zoom lens, but haven't really noticed a difference. I might even pick up a 24mm f2.8. I could use a basic wide angle lens :ponder: I did the same thing once. I managed to live off $74 for 2 weeks. CarbonXe 09-30-2008, 04:08 PM The weird thing, I haven't been even close to being short on cash since I got this job last November...and all of a sudden, I'm broke and everyone I know is broke right now. I wouldn't want to know what it would be like if the credit crisis actually affected me :nails:. Back on topic. Someone who has a wide angle lens, can you take a comparison photo for me? Two identical shots, same aperture/shutter speed/focal range. One with a wide angle lens (not fisheye, I hate fisheye and it's too much money) and one with either a standard lens or standard zoom lens? I just want to get a grasp on what to expect with a WA lens. I only have 8 and 12 months before my two trips to the Caribbean next year, and I'd like to have a versatile set of lenses. Also, does anyone think buying the 18-55mm kit lens W/ Vibration Reduction would be worth it? It's the exact same lens I have now, but it has the vibration assist. I want a decent lens for low light situations (which I have now, 50mm f1.8) that also isn't zoomed in so far. eujin 10-01-2008, 01:28 AM I just got an external flash for my Nikon D70, and its AMAZING!! you can take some sick ___ pictures in pitch black rooms...its pretty wild. Even I have more than that & I think I'm broke, but I'm not too far off from $90. =/ Weren't you saying not too long ago that your going to buy an evo and that you had the money right now and that you could afford an is-f and things like that? Just sayin :P kiss_kiss_kill 10-02-2008, 08:25 PM No. I never said I had cash in hand. I plan on getting an Evo X (or 135i) AFTER I sell my tC. The only reason I'm somewhat broke right now is cuz I paid off my tC (over 2 yrs early might I add). Why are you even trying to ruin this thread by causing drama? That has nothing to do with this thread anyway. Take that to PM or don't say anything at all if you wanna try and bash me. Y'know; just sayin. tC4me 10-02-2008, 08:37 PM You've been PMed. Ro_Ja 10-10-2008, 05:59 AM Your "selective coloring" was about as bad a tctctc's "focus on random things" photoshoots. Pick one thing to highlight instead of a million smaller things. It really distracts the viewer. Here's one I did for my friend. I was not takin' jabs at your consumer level lenses. So relax and don't get furry on me. Yeah, despite the fact that I've only had my camera for less than a month, there was dust on my sensor. Sucks I had to spend $65 to get it cleaned. Wish I could do it myself, but knowing me I'd probably eff it up more. I don't even know how it got in. I don't even change my lens. CarbonXe 10-10-2008, 03:59 PM Tripod. Odds are, the lighting isn't going to be the best inside, so without a tripod, flash-less shots will be near impossible. That's just HDR style editing. Just wondering if a sony cybershot dsc-h5 would count for this thread? New to photography here and just kinda gettin started with it. No. It's not an SLR, it's a point and shoot. Dakine 10-13-2008, 03:17 PM is there a how to on HDR? CarbonXe 10-13-2008, 03:23 PM is there a how to on HDR? Google it, you'll find something. Basically, you take multiple shots from the same location of the same thing. It's pretty much impossible without a tripod. 1 shot needs to be under exposed, 1 needs to have normal exposure, and 1 needs to be over exposed (equal to the under exposed shot). Exposure compensation helps a lot with this. Then you use software to combine the images. Also, HDR shooting isn't just taking a shot and doing the editing. This is something a lot of people don't understand, and I made the same mistake when I first started to try to do HDR shots. HDR = High Dynamic Range. The shot needs to have a vast range of colors and have great emphasis on shadows and light. This is HDR. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d5/Trencin_hdr_001.jpg Ro_Ja 10-13-2008, 05:27 PM damn, my eyes hurt after looking at that! purpled_out_tC 10-13-2008, 06:07 PM nice, but it looks like something from the night before xmas (the movie, but i didn't want to look up how they spell it) kiss_kiss_kill 10-13-2008, 06:16 PM What program do you use for HDR? I downloaded PhotoMatix but I can't get the darn thing to work. What ISO's did you shoot at to get your photo to turn out like that? Ro_Ja 10-13-2008, 06:23 PM HDR isn't created from different ISO levels. You have to go in and change the exposure settings. It looks like a number line on our cameras. +/- looking like thing. It should go from -2 to +2. I have no idea how to change it though and I left my manual booklet at home. kiss_kiss_kill 10-13-2008, 06:25 PM Robert, I will punch you in the face then! Haha, you told me to change the ISO when I was chatting with you online about it! THAT EXPLAINS WHY MY "HDR" CAME OUT THE WAY IT DID! Pfffffft! CarbonXe 10-13-2008, 06:25 PM ^ What he said. Just set the camera on the tripod, and set it to a balanced exposure. Take a shot. Now set the exposure compensation to -2, adjust shutter speed, take a shot. Now set the exposure compensation to +2, adjust shutter speed, take a shot. Now add all 3 pictures to something like Photomatix, and let it do the work. Ro_Ja 10-13-2008, 06:31 PM Robert, I will punch you in the face then! Haha, you told me to change the ISO when I was chatting with you online about it! THAT EXPLAINS WHY MY "HDR" CAME OUT THE WAY IT DID! Pfffffft! I'm sorry. I was looking at a wrong tutorial. Google failed me. And I failed you. :( lol This is the real tutorial. http://abduzeedo.com/how-create-hdr-photos-hdrphotomatix-tutorial Nick06tC 10-13-2008, 07:17 PM I know with Canon there is no need to make any changes to the camera for each shot, unless you want more than 3 photos to merge. There is an exposure bracketing setting inside of the camera. You just go into where you set the EV levels and rotate the dial and the single line will turn to three lines. THose three lines are now your three values. I set them far apart, then set the camera to a 2 second delay and to automatically take the three pictures one after another. I will find the Canon tutorial for it. My only issue with HDR is most people dont know how to edit them and they look like crap. CarbonXe 10-13-2008, 07:23 PM ^ Same thing with Nikon. I just use +2 and -2 as a safety net to ensure it's the same exposure intensity. However, setting it to +2/-2 increases chances of moving the camera ever so slightly :tap:. If you haven't done HDR, you'll find it very frustrating to keep the camera perfectly still, even with a tripod. JOEinSD 10-13-2008, 07:36 PM Tina, you have an XTi right? Here's how you'd do it. -Menu2 -AEB: Set it to -2/+2 -Set camera to delayed timer Then it'll shoot 3 consecutive shots, one at each exposure level without you needing to touch the camera. If you haven't done HDR, you'll find it very frustrating to keep the camera perfectly still, even with a tripod.I concur. :tap: Ro_Ja 10-13-2008, 07:41 PM Just tried that and it turned out perfectly! I still need to learn how to use my manual settings. :( RockBlocker 10-22-2008, 06:53 PM Very nice indeed... Kiss Kiss, practice practice is all I can say. CarbonXe 10-22-2008, 06:56 PM ^ Ditto I've only been playing with my DSLR for about 9 months, and I only shoot in manual mode. You'll eventually learn techniques along the way, and you'll usually stumble across them without intention. SCIONshane 10-22-2008, 06:58 PM Yeah I just got mine this summer and shot on auto for the first month or two, now I'm full time manual for the past couple months. Ro_Ja 10-22-2008, 07:02 PM Manual FTW! I'll have some new pics to add soon. I'm going with Edwin (P-Shooter) to shoot a car this weekend. Oh, and I'm shooting with a friend around campus today. CarbonXe 10-22-2008, 07:03 PM Rules that I've stood by for shooting in manual mode... Never touch ISO, always leave it at the minimum Never use flash Use shutter speed to control exposure Use aperture to adjust exposure only when I need a specific shutter speed Never rely on the LCD for picture quality Take at least 3 pictures of everything Never try to take a shot slower than 1/25 without a tripod Ace83 10-22-2008, 07:46 PM ^^ good rules.. depends on camera and lens its ok put ISO high when you have no choice lol its gets noisy at 800 though on the xti, and also I shoot 1/4 even 0'3" without tripod and 0 shakes, that assuming the object doesnt move lol CarbonXe 10-22-2008, 07:53 PM You're right, but that's why I have multiple rules :P. The only time I can possibly think of needing to use ISO, is when you're at the max aperture setting, and the shutter speed is just a tad too slow to capture a moving subject. I also learned that 1/250s seems to be the magic number for rolling shots. It's fast enough to keep the car sharp, and slow enough to not keep up with the wheels. andino 10-22-2008, 08:28 PM Damn Shane those are some awesome shots! SCIONshane 10-22-2008, 09:52 PM Damn Shane those are some awesome shots! Thanks bro... kiss_kiss_kill 10-22-2008, 10:08 PM Okay Carbon, since you mentioned rolling shots. What settings do you use EXACTLY to take a rolling shot at lets say.....3pm on a bright sunny day? RockBlocker 10-22-2008, 10:23 PM That can depend on where in the country you are referring too. One thing I had to learn quick is you cannot shoot the same in WA as AZ.....The amount of white and brown here will blow your mind away..and I aint talking skin color Ace83 10-22-2008, 11:02 PM broad daylight, you can set it at lowest iso and with shutter if 1000-1500 it really depends on condition.. TV option would be nice too during day time.. but a good time to take pics is during sunset or sunrise CarbonXe 10-23-2008, 12:00 AM Okay Carbon, since you mentioned rolling shots. What settings do you use EXACTLY to take a rolling shot at lets say.....3pm on a bright sunny day? ISO minimum, shutter speed 1/250s, and then adjust aperture to balance exposure. P-Shooter 10-23-2008, 01:10 AM I am left speechless with some of the pics I'm seeing here. I never thought or currently think about artistically composing shots. The only thing I use my gear for really is to do event coverage. And we all know that can be done in P-mode without any problems. lol Andino, Shane, Carbon, and Rock...you guys...um....."rock". P-Shooter 10-23-2008, 01:13 AM Manual FTW! Yeah whatever. hahahaha Ro_Ja 10-23-2008, 02:09 AM You're just grumpy you can't shoot in manual. :P More pics coming soon! I'm uploading them now.
