hey Rob you still on Kit lens?

Yeah, I am. For that shoot though, I was using my 18-55mm, and borrowing a 50mm, 16-35mm, and a 70-200mm.

I'm looking at buying a 28-105 and asking for the 10-22 for xmas.

Jon, look up 1 post. Those were his old wheels. He was loosing air pressure in his Jlines because of a faulty seal when they were painted them flat black to match his paint, so he had to take them off.

d40x is a D40 with the same sensor as the D80. in other words 10mp instead of 6mp but higher priced to boot. which, in the SLR world you will come to learn, megapixels do not matter like they do with p&s. there are a couple other minor differences as well, all which will not matter to you at the beginning stages of getting into photography. a d40 will take just as nice of pictures as the d40x and at a cheaper price. had i have known this back when i started, i would have gotten the d40 instead of the d40x. i basically wasted $150 but have learned my lesson since then.

the best deals that i know are reputable i have been able to find are from ADORAMA.COM. i have actually referred 3 different people there all buying d40 packages they sell... all are very happy with their experience.

the $375 is a refurb. i actually wouldn't expect nikon to refurb anything that isn't back to brand new shape before selling but who knows. the brand new packages on adorama are only $450. best deal on probably the best entry level digital SLR you can purchase. i would go as far as to say it is the best deal out there... what you get for what you pay.

same as mine, seller bought it early this year (with BB reciept for $500+). everything that came in the box, Nikon D40 body, 18-55mm kit lense, 512mb card, all software, cables and neck strap still in wrappers. the body and lense had zero signs of usage or any wear and tear at all, it could pass for brand spanking new! lense and lcd screen was crisp and clear.

The movie mode on that camera is total crap. There's point and shoot cameras that have better video quality than the D90 [ at least from what reviewers said on CNET]. If you really want a solid video recorder with on an DSLR get the Canon 5D MarkII (if you can afford it).

Check out the this short by Vincent Laforet.

I would not buy a D90 for video, thats why you buy a 1080p video recorder.

A D90 is an excellent DSLR...check out
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond90/
for a comprehensive review

I have a D300 and my nephew just got a D90, I think the D90 is an excellent camera for the money. I love my D300 and will probably keep it for many years (just like my D70 which I still own) but the D90 borrows some very good features from it.

The bottom line is that its still the lens that make overall picture quality. Good luck with your decisions.

It's pretty simple, Large aperture get bokeh, small aperture star effect (especially at night). I hope that helps. If you want a sharpen bokeh you would then make it make the aperture smaller.

Nick06tC
10-31-2008, 03:51 AM
Bokeh is just another word for a shallow depth of field. Its not a technique or anything special. Its just how shallow or deep your depth of field is when compared to distance from the focal point.
At say a f2.8 aperture of a subject 5 feet away, if you have anything around them that is say 7feet to infinity away, it will be blurry, or show depth of field, or have Bokeh.
Where as the same p[icture at f11.0 the subject at 5 feet will be in focus and anything around it will be as well.

Anyone shooting in anything by normal mode will make these settiungs for every picture. You can also use the portrait setting and get it to an extent.

Here is an example of something I took quickly. First with a shallow depth of field, second with a large depth of field. Not good pictures at all, but a good example.

Couldn't figure out how to do it, lol. That and I only gave it like 5 minutes to try it out .
It's pretty simple, Large aperture get bokeh, small aperture star effect (especially at night). I hope that helps. If you want a sharpen bokeh you would then make it make the aperture smaller.

Well, I didn't have anything to put on the lens to make the shaped bokeh, so I tried to make a cutout, which resulted in failure.

Here is a sample of shaped bokeh.

^ What he said.

Just set the camera on the tripod, and set it to a balanced exposure. Take a shot. Now set the exposure compensation to -2, adjust shutter speed, take a shot. Now set the exposure compensation to +2, adjust shutter speed, take a shot. Now add all 3 pictures to something like Photomatix, and let it do the work.

Don't change it manually...even with a tripod it can still be nearly impossible to align them (perfectly) even with photo editing software. Use your camera's AEB (automatic exposure bracketing) feature so you don't have to touch the camera. Usually the more you take and are able to combine, the better the shot. My camera only does 3 at a time. Some can do 5 and maybe even more for all I know.

D40 does not have auto bracketing. the D80 is the lowest model with that function.

unless i've just yet to find it in the D40, which if so i will punch myself because i've been doing it manually from the get-go due to not seeing an autobracketing function.

Here's how you'd do it.

-Menu2
-AEB: Set it to -2/+2
-Set camera to delayed timer

Then it'll shoot 3 consecutive shots, one at each exposure level without you needing to touch the camera.

as long as it has the warranty, that's all that matters. wherever they bought it, you can return it just the same as they did. kind of a waste of $150 if it's in as good of shape as you say it is.

i still wish people on here would post what equipment they used even down to what filter was on the lens. and also post HOW u took the shot. It would be a great way to learn techniques on how to do certain shots.

also might be cool to see an original copy and then the post processed copy. just so people can see the difference.

And get some DG Nerf bars for the Raptor. Nerf bars are without a doubt, the best first mod possible.

don, love the photos. keep them coming. I actually like the unedited versions a LOT better. but i am old fashioned like that. all my work is straight from the camera with no editing at all, other than to downsize. now i'm sure that's why they don't look as good too.

DonNguyen
11-10-2008, 04:12 PM
only 2 of the last 5 i posted have some special editing

Elijahtc
11-10-2008, 04:14 PM
now were they all edited to take the rig out of the shot?

i don't even edit mine for contrast, color correction, etc etc. I would but i have no idea how.

DonNguyen
11-10-2008, 04:23 PM
yeah...the rig was edited out...obviously not gonna leave that in there

Elijahtc
11-10-2008, 04:26 PM
yeah i didn't know if the rig was in all the shots or if u hung out the car like i do in my rolling shots ha ha

i would LOVE to build a rig for my canon 5d but i know NOTHING bout it. I am assuming it is on a wireless remote. how do u know what exposure to set it to and i am assuming that it is rigged to a computer so u have a display of what is in the frame and all that.

i know i'm asking noob questions.

DonNguyen
11-10-2008, 04:30 PM
lol...rig, kenny in car, me walking with rig, firing via wired remote, aperture priority

CarbonXe

Set up everything before you start rolling, then either set a long timer or use a remote to take the shot.

Building the rig is the hard part.

Elijahtc
11-10-2008, 04:40 PM
yeah. i would LOVE a rig cause i've always just hung out the back of an xB with someone sitting on my legs and a strap running to something in the car so i won't go flying out. sucks cause u can't tell how close to the ground u are when u are staring down the viewfinder ha ha

No. I cringe every time I see it. It's a disgrace and Nissan shouldn't be allowed to make cars anymore with the crap they're trying to pull with this car. Regardless, The Vette and Viper both shattered the record that the GTR was made for, so the car is basically a failure in Nissan's own eyes.

It doesn't have to be of your car. For example one of the subjects on the other forum was "Rep Your City" (or something like that). The task was you went and took a pic of a landmark (well known or not) that represented where you live.
