Flash bounced off the ceiling? Off camera would yield better results. Since the D40 doesn't have CLS you may want to look into a TTL cord or radio triggers.

Most definitely. Built in flash is useless, imo. I only use it to trigger my SB-600 or on the rare occasion to provide front fill.

What method did you use to get color in the B&W

for this one I ended up using the flickr B&W edit feature. but usually the camera you can choose sepia/b&w etc.

there's only a jackstand in the front....jack in the rear isn't even making contact with the car...

If it's Nikon send it in. I'm not sure if B&H or Adorama does repairs but since your in NY you can call and see. If not then look in the phone book for camera repair shops.

I dont even use the built in flash anymore unless I have the diffuser on. It cuts down on the brightness, but it makes the quality a lot better.

the pop up flash is wayy too harsh imo...i dont like using it.

i can understand your frustration. but you gotta be sympathetic. it seems not everyone has great subject matter to take pictures of or just don't really go out looking or maybe just don't have a niche for photography but want to feel apart of it. i'm pretty fortunate as i've incorporated it into my job which allows some pretty awesome opportunities. sometimes i come on here and there's pictures of just pointless stuff. a rusty water faucet. a fence. a lens cap. anything and everything as long as there's DOF. ugh that really annoys me. the pointless picture of nothing but shot at 2.8 or lower. you know things i'm like... "why would you take pictures of that?" not to harp on the dude above (many more just like that) but why would you take pictures of an xbox controller? is that something you really want to save for some reason??? but some people i think just really want to be apart of the DSLR camera thing and will get one whether they really even have an eye for subject matter to shoot or not and they want to post the pictures they take too. Makes them feel apart of the whole thing. Then again, some people find "art" in some of the things that i think would be a waste of time. i bet there's things i've posted people have no interest in. im sure everyone's opinions are different. i think you have to just roll with knowing everyone's idea of photography is different. this thread in particular i think is about as random as it gets. look at what you want to look at, skip what you don't. that's what i do.

Or you could just create a thread for photos that follow the main rules of photography, i.e. rule of thirds, level horizons, etc. However, even in a thread like that you can't tell people what to take pictures of being that photography is a form of expression. Everyone's style is different and so is what one perceives as being an attractive photo. Some of the best photos I've seen are of simple things that I would have never thought to take a picture of. When you're able to evoke some kind of emotion with a photo, to me, that's when you have a winner. Hell I can go take pics of cars all day for example, but at the end of the day it's still just a car.

the first page alone has a few pictures of the most random things, so why complain 605 pages after? you know?

i personally am new to ALL of this, but when i think a picture of mine (xbox remotes like above) look good and i think they look good i want to share it to everyone and hopefully can hear feedback from everyone

If I may.... When I purchased my camera I just purchased it to take pictures of team/cars.... When I came to this thread I was a blank sheet of paper. Now I know (or at least the concept of)HDR/bracket shooting, Lomography, Dragan, photoshop and overall function of my camera.... I may not be good at all those things (yet) but there's atleast 3-4 people in this thread that I'm learning from... I post my pic to get opinions of them and in turn I try to do my research on how to improve them...

i guess what he is saying is don't take random photos that look like they came from a PS camera. if you take a photo of a say an xbox controller give some reason why like...hey just got my 50 1.8, look at the bokeh or somehting.

also, a picture is like an essay. if you don't proofread before you turn it in, it will look like crap.

Snow is fun, just be careful with your exposure and white balance. It will tend to shade blue, and overexpose. It's best to intentionally underexpose and crank it back up in PP if you have to.

Yeah it snowed last month too. One thing I like is that it acts like a big reflector filling in shadows on your subject.

Also why it's so easy to overexpose :)

You can use whatever lens you have available that best suits the purpose. Typically wider-angle lenses will make your life easier for it, so you need less shots to stitch together. For that one I just used my kit lens all the way out at 18mm. That one consists of 5 shots stitched together. You can use Photoshop (File -> Automate -> Photomerge) or a free application called "Autostitch"

Not looking 400-600 so I can learn with it, also want to take it underway with me(im coast guard) and dont wan't something too expensive if it falls overboard or falls down a ladder or hits the deck or what not. there's a Canon Xti with 18-55mm Lens for 450 with some filters, couple dslr books, memory sticks, was thinking of picking it up. best buy has Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with Extra 75-300mm Lens for 600+tax. any suggestions?

LOT of differences. Main one is the 580 is more powerful, more control, recycles faster, and can be a master and not just a slave.

SD cards that come with cameras are usually throw away cards, so figure that you'll spend another $50-80 on another card very quickly.

I have a feeling that will be the last lens I buy. I'm contemplating buying the Sigma 18-200 OS over the Nikon, simply because of how awesome my Sigma 10-20 is and it's 1/2 the price of the Nikon. Reviews have said the Nikon is slightly better, but I doubt I'll find it $400 better lol. Then I need to get rid of my 50 1.8 for the new 35 1.8.

yeah kinda my friend works at best buy so he got me a little discount it was originally 199$ he got it for 159$ sent to his job. not to bad
