tripod and maybe some filters, when using the tripod set a 2sec timer so you wont hit or move the camera in any way?

you probably should have left them up so people could give you pointers. there's a lot of good photographers (not professional, yet still put up awesome work) on the forum/in this thread that could guide you in the right direction. as long you don't get butt-hurt over the criticism then you're destined to learn a lot.

all post up what setting you used for the shots. that will help these guys/girl guide you to where you need to be next time. i don't have photography skills/knowledge so i could guide you at all, unless you over edit then i'll let you know you over did it.
all imo.

Yanki01
11-15-2008, 12:35 AM
yea man, dont take them down. people in this thread are here to help, i try to help as much as i can but im still learning myself. the Nikon D100 is a nice camera and the potential is great with it, keep messing with it and you'll get the hang of it.

JOEinSD
11-15-2008, 01:05 AM
AWw man.. I didn't want you to take them down! Leave em up. We'll try to help.

I think it may help if you get a much more stable tripod. I don't know what ISO those were shot at either, but it's best of you set it at the lowest ISO (apporpriate for the settings) when you shoot. That'll make the pics less grainy.

Elijahtc
11-15-2008, 01:10 AM
that's another reason it's good to post up ur settings for all ur shots. that way if u need any help it will make it easier for someone more knowledgeable to make a better critique of ur shots.

JOEinSD
11-15-2008, 01:21 AM

I like it because it helps me with seeing what settings to use for what situations.

so I bought a canon 50d a couple of weeks ago, this is my first digital slr. my prior camera was a 5mp sony point and shoot cybershot.

the lens I use is a 28-135mm is

I have a couple of questions
right now Im using a cheap targus UV filter.
I get mixed answers.. some say itll detract sharpness and picture quality while others say itll do nothing but protect the lens' front element so cheap ones like mine wont matter.

another question...ive been playing around with the camera and want to know if a polarizer will fix blown out whites i.e. sky?
my subject will have excellent exposure but the sky in the back will be like super white or blown out. Will a polarizer fix this?

dugzilla
11-15-2008, 05:14 AM
There is a lot of debate on using filters, if you like the way your pics look with one use it. I don't use protective filters, but I don't bang my lens' around either.

As for the polarizer it won't fix blown highlights. you need to adjust the exposure comp on your camera if it has it and you should be fine. I am a Nikon guy and don't have any experience with canon.

I can say that I have become addicted to prime lenses and hardly ever take the 50mm 1.8 or 85mm 1.8 off my camera anymore. They take such sharp pics I can't get enough.

well it's always in my car but i never carry it around with me once i'm outside my car. i can never decide on what lens i want attached ha ha. Either my 24-105 f4 IS L lens or my 15mm fisheye

I love using the fisheye for something new but the 24-105 is more versatile. Guess i need to get another 5d camera body since the new one just came out. ha ha that way i can carry both ha ha

I always take my camera bag with me, I can fit like 8 lenses (though I only have 5, & they're not zoom lenses, only one is) + the body in it. I got it on sale for $30 when it was originally marked $54.99; it's a Lowepro, too. :)

Elijahtc
11-17-2008, 07:03 AM
i have a $200 Lowepro bag, but it is a backpack that is huge to just carry through something like the mall or a restaurant just when I wanna take my camera in with me.

CarbonXe

Hmmm...

that's the bag i have. I love it. Definitely holds a lot of equipment. The pads are all moveable so u can arrange it all the way u want. Hold my Macbook perfectly. The tripod holder works great too. Only downside of the bag is that it is basically for moving a lot of equipment and isn't practical for carrying all the time for only one camera body and a few lenses.

CarbonXe

It's not just a camera bag. Shoulder bags are annoying as hell (I know, I have one), they can't hold a full size tripod and can't hold a laptop. If you have the equipment to fill the bag, it's well worth the money. I'd find it absurd if someone took $2,000 worth of camera equipment and tried to shove it into an undersized bag.

DonNguyen
11-17-2008, 04:17 PM
same bag i have too...fully loaded that thing weighs about 30 lbs...weighed it when i used to travel a lot...not fun when you're hiking for miles and bringing tripods with you as well

Elijahtc

i have a sigma 2.8.. its alright in my opinon. i really bought it for the 2.8 factor for concerts and what not.. a little bit soft on the edges but its stil good and useable... i was starting photog when i got it for $300. and keeping it until i can save up (justify myself to buy it lol) and buy the canon version at about $1k (24-70 or 28-70).

here are a few examples.. and keep in mind the photobucket ones dumbs it down alot :/ (the first 2)

Ro_Ja

Alright people! It's photo contest time! With Thanksgiving just 2 days away, I think it's appropriate that the theme for the contest be, well, Thanksgiving! So, take pictures of your dinner, place setting, ect. and submit it for judging! But to be fair, there will be separate categories for edited photos (if you're good with photoshop) and unedited photos (if you don't have access or don't know how to use photoshop).

What: Photo Contest!!

Theme: Thanksgiving

Categories: Edited and Unedited photos

you definitely do not need any experience. just turn it on, roll it to AUTO mode, and start snapping away just like everyone else that doesn't know how to actually use the camera.

also, putting your pictures on a blackframe background and adding a little watermark/signature to your photos helps with making your photos look like you knew what you were doing as well!

the ISO should be your first assessment when setting up your camera for a shot.

i concur... AUTO FTL. just buy a point&shoot. Now you have an overgrown point and shoot that you can't fit in your pocket.

actually my favorite thing to do to people i can tell buy a huge expensive camera (because they can afford to) and don't how to use it is sound interested and ask to see it and ask what specific buttons do or what ISO they are shooting at and why... some responses are priceless. about 80% of time they have no idea what they are doing at all.

another trick for the not-so-good photographer that buys oober expensive equipment... make whatever the picture is black and white.

I see one right now for $500 on eBay and by using the Microsoft Live Search Cashback program i can get 30% off if i "buy it now" and pay with my paypal account? What do yall think, i like the fact it has more AF points, 10MP (yes i know it doesnt mean nothing but its a plus) and its AF so i can use my 50mm 1.8 with it. What do yall think, i can use the kit lense (18-55) that i have with my D40?

no disrespect to her, but she's not a model. nice rims though.

Chrisb319, i like both pics. the watermark on the first one takes over the shot though and on the second on the placement of the mark threw me. normally people put there's on the right bottom corner, i thought. i like the logo, but i think you need to put your own spin on it.

snowromance

i agree flickr is the way to go. i have a flickr pro account. for only $2/month to keep unlimited photos safe and backed up... it's a good deal. and it is more about hobbyism than professionalism like with other sites such as smugmug which i really am not fond of. it's also less expensive.

i love how they have the private feature as well for photos that you don't need other eyes seeing but would like to keep backed up and safe. If anything ever happens to your hard drive you can always download all your photos back from flickr which is such a relief when you have thousands of your children on there that you don't want to ever lose say in a fire or something like with printed copies or saved only on a computer that get's destroyed.

what all did you do?
looks like hue/saturation and brightness/contrast
How did you brighten up those photos of tina's car? That could be very helpful for me in the future.

In the past, all I did to adjust the colors was hue/saturation and brightness/contrast. Ro_Ja told me to try using the levels and curves options in PS. Gave it a try and still wasn't sure if colors were coming out "appropriately" because I have no idea what is appropriate. He then gave me a few parameters to use as a rule and I stick with those no matter what I think looks good/bad. lol I also cropped the top on both pics.

cool picture but what is that huge logo thing??
I tried to be cool and add a watermark... not cool? HAHAHA Overpowering?

i agree. im used to working with a sb800 and 600 on location. those arent the real shots, just ones i like because of the 10mm angle. that was the first time shooting with that kind of set up. the pw's are sweet, the alien bees...im still up in the air about.
