Thiis past week I manage to take a few shots at a Rally against Deportation. My friend who is also my neighbor was picked up and being detained for deportation. It was really hard for me to take pictures while walking through the crowd getting close to the center. All I felt while looking through the viewfinder was everyone's emotions which then led me to tear up myself.

Well I cant speak for Jon, but my friend is looking to upgrade to a D90 right now. But he decided to wait for the 3000 because of higher MP, more FPS (does a lot of sports stuff) And for the HD video the camera can autofocus when you zoom in and out. Plus 2 SD card slots and 39 AF points.

so i decided to just do a bit of research on it... WOW. i must say i'm very impressed.

It's also weather sealed with a magnesium alloy frame. Don't get me wrong I love my D90, but this camera has everything I wish the D90 had. It also has the ability to mount and meter with AI/S lenses which is a plus.

It's a Ogio Atiba Mini. I have a Ogio backpack as well for school and it's great so when I saw this camera bag I had to get it. It blows my old Lowepro bag out of the water.

I had an Ogio backpack and it was dismal, terrible ergonomics. But my Ogio golf bag is awesome.

That Ogio Atiba Mini has no spot for a tripod. Aside from that, it looks like a great bag to me.

Mine has a strap on the side you could put a tripod in.

To be completely honest, I don't think they topped the 1st gen. This car is more of a side step.

the front and sides i can imagine has a good remedy by changing bumper or lip kits but the rear i cant imagine anything can be done to it.. the tails and the hatch i just cant stand it, i dont even know why they a have to make a new uglier one lol

Anyone want to suggest what I should upgrade to from the D40? I'd like to stay under $1000 and also get some nice HD video recording. I'm currently thinking about the D3100 (even though it has no remote feature), the D5000, the D90, and maybe even picking up the Canon 500D. Suggestions appreciated. :D

D7000 if your going to be able to find one. Or as soon as the D7000 comes out grab a cheap D90. I upgraded from the D40 to the D90 and never regretted it. Only thing I wish the D90 has was continuous AF for video. But Its not worth upgrading to the D7000 for it.

And yeah, the pictures above is the valvetrain from a big block. Huge stainless valves, Double/honeycomb valve springs. 454 bored to a 496. Fairly large cam. Going into a 72 Chevelle. Should be running next weekend.

serious question, 7d vs. 16-35. Which one would you get?

a 30d. I was initially just going to get the 7d, but when I thought about it I figured that the 16-35 would be a better upgrade.

Also, would you keep the 30D? If not, then you could conceivably get the 7D and then sell the 30D and get a Sig 10-20 or a Tokina 12-24 or a Tamaron 17-50...

you basically just listed everything that's been running through my head. haha. I love the idea of having video, but I'm not sure if I'd use it very much. But, then again I hate how I can only enlarge a picture up to a certain point before it gets super grainy with my 30d. Also, I think if I pick up a 10-20 or a 17-55 then I'll still want the 16-35 in the end. So much to contemplate. haha

If were you (and I will be in a few weeks minus the 16-35 but 7D vs 60D) I would do the 7D and save up for a different lens or save up again for a 16-35.

That seems like the way I'm leaning right now. Get the 7d now and save up again for the 16-35. that would be my ideal set up right now, however that's a lot of dough for me.

Hey i got a Canon 17-55 im trying to sell. i wanna get a 24-70. need me some more L glass! lol

the 7D is still not FF but the 16-35mm is probably one of my favorite lens', but if you're not going to use video I would say 50D over the "new" plastic bodied 60D. If you go with a cropped body like a 50d or 7D the 10-22mm would accomplish about the same as a 16-35mm would on a FF body.

16-35! Having an expensive camera doesn't make your pictures any better. it just makes life a lil easier.

That's exactly what I was thinking, but I'm getting mixed opinions everywhere. Looks like I'll have to go with my gut, too bad my gut is split too. haha

You may want to have a doctor look at that.

That's what I would say, get a decent body (what's with in your budget) and spend money on fast glass. Not everyone needs a MKII, even though that might be my next upgrade but also looking at a 50D or 7D.

Used 3 speedlights. one at the front bumper and, one at the door other at the 1/4 panel to light up the the shaded side of the car. and lots of Photoshop.

Sigma 10-20mm 3.5 is not a bad consideration. its cheaper and its f3.5 throughout the whole range. Image quality is the same.

Have to share my excitement. My D90 arrived today and I'm amazed at how this camera is just... better than my old D40. I expected the differences to be minimal but it feels so much more legit.

Thanks I was trying to leave some of the defining things about the car in the photo. Also it's supposed to be like a glance and you see the BBS instead of a detailed shot of the wheel.

thanks. unfortunately Florida is rather flat so there isnt a way to get a higher perspective without getting buildings in the way so i sat my tripod ontop of my car.
I wanted to get it coming towards me but it was late at night and plane traffic was light

took this with my 10-22. cloudy days makes for great soft lighting. used strobes for this too @ low power.

Ive use it before. its not worth it. the zoom range between 11 and 16 is so little. 2.8 on a ultrawide u can live with out. most of the time i leave my apature above 5 on my 10-22 so my dof is wider. Sigma 10-20 f3.5 man! its a good walk around lens!

That's what I though about before but from reading on POTN, people like the 11-16 more than the sigma. It's also cheaper, so how much of a difference will 1 mm make?

Decided to tinker around with an led light that dad uses for his video stuff. Originally I was taking pics of my car since I recently washed/waxed it, but they weren't turning out as well. So...I decided to shoot the 1098.

those top fuel shots are awesome. what settings do you guys recommend for a dark setting with low light and a few action shots. im taking pics for my go go bar a few come out good and a few too dark or blurry.

the settings my using are:
flash mode -fill-flash
autofocus mode - single shot for the steady poses and automatic for rapid and action shots
iso sensitivity - 3200
fstop around 4 - 5

Thanks. I ran into the issues of not Getting the night shots I wanted. Pitch black trying to capture something going 300mph in under 4 seconds is tricky.

I'd recommend buying a 50mm, or 35mm. I owned both and they are amazing in low light.

I didnt even notice the bush, the leading lines of the building, and the bridge drew my eyes directly to the city.

i'm not one of the people going through the school. im actually just the guy that flies with the jet to make sure it keeps working. if something breaks, i fix it. if i dont have what i need to fix it, i'm supposed to know what parts/people i need and request them. as long as the jet doesn't break, i'm just a photographer along for the ride documenting missions for the the air force website/newspaper.

That's an awesome job to have.

bought it off an old lady in palm beach with 40k on it. sold it around 60k and got my tc. i love it but it needed body work and interior work that i didnt feel like dumping into a 1992. Not to mention this was during the 4 dollar a gallon gas craze. so that v8 was destroying my wallet

Guys, question to those of you that can help...

Since I've been doing photoshoots for peoples cars word has gotten around and I've got a few people that want me to do a shoot for them. I'd like to charge people a small fee just to keep it legit and to hope that I'll be taken serious. Based on my current level of skill (you can peep my flickr), what do you guys think is a solid asking price?

First figure out how you want to set the pricing up. Some people do a flat rate, while others do a base rate (for gas) plus the time (session and processing) and equipment rental if necessary.

jasper, to comment on your situation. i have been doing car shoots for a while and people are always asking for one. when they ask what i charge, the answer is always, nothing, just spread my name around and we'll call it even. they are always so shocked and try to argue but i tell them that getting my name out is worth more than money right now because a)i have a good job and b)photography is a hobby and i just love doing it. the more i do it, the better i get at it, then maybe, just maybe i'll find that one shoot (not some local kid) that gets me paid. we usually agree on lunch or dinner after that. by doing this, i now have contacts everywhere in almost every business.

also, i never travel more than 20min for a shoot. i make them come to me (unless i am already there of course)

i do get paid for a different type of photography, i shoot buildings that have been completed for a friends construction company. that pays quite well.

It is pretty low quality, odd that it was from a MKII, but I think it's also the fake PS DOF/blur that makes it look bad.

I'm pretty sure the DOF isn't fake. Subject-background separation is more apparent on a FF camera.

saw that car on your Flickr speedy what's coils is he lowered on? Flash would help, looks good but make everything pop more and a little less distracting with the shadows etc.

You have the 600, 700, 800, or 900. I wouldn't bother with the 400 as it's too limited. As the numbers increase, so do their power (except 600 to 700), features, and price. For general use, the 600 is plenty.

Actually jon is correct. And quality is cause I pulled it from my facebook.
But the shot I literally just kneeled and shot. And it is straight from camera no Photoshop. I believe it was shot at 1.8 with the canon 50mm 1.8. So no sorry no fake blur tool.

I believe for starting out the kit lens is a pretty decent lens to have and use. The 50mm lens is definitely an awesome lens as well but you at limited.

Whenever I do rolling shots I usually wrap the strap up around my arm. It helps keep it out of the picture and also works as added security from dropping it.

The strap was wrap around my arm twice lol. It's the excess closest to the camera that was flapping. I took the shot to see how close I was to the wheel which was pretty scary when my friend decided to air the car down a little more without me knowing. :shock:

And there is a REASON that the 50 1.8 is in just about every photographers bag. that should tell u something. No matter if u shoot nikon or canon or pentax (ha ha ha ha) u will find a 50mm prime in every serious photographers bag.

i'm no serious photographer but i want to buy a couple speedlites, stands, and pocket wizards to do some strobing/flash photography.

i use one 580ex II and two vivitar 285hv's and i love the setup. And I got a softbox and light stand for $120 that I LOVE. i use cactus v4 triggers and they work just fine. I've just gotta get a new trigger cause they leave banding on the 5d classic. Of course it is the ONLY camera it does that on. ha ha

What you mean by manually zooming the flash? Like cranking on a wheel?

like the head of the flash moves in and out. so u can zoom the flash to be more like a spot light for effect or to actually throw the light farther.

And if ur shooting on a 1.6 crop factor ur still technically shooting at 50mm when ur using that 35mm ;)

That's what I was thinking. However the advantage of the current version is that it will meter on my D90 as well.

Yeah but the 50 was like a 85. This is why I need a D700. One will hopefully find it's way into my bag in about 3 months. :pray:

Dam I need one of those pocket rocket. So far I've upgrade my body and Lens. I went from a 350D with 18-55 kit lens and 75-300mm to a 40D with 17-40mm f/4.0 and 50mm f/1.8. Think this should keep me satisfied for a good minute.

Alright, I'm in an odd situation. I'm saving up for a Canon t2i, but for the time being I have a choice between two cameras. I can either stick with my 30D, or I can use a new Rebel XS. What do you guys think I should go with?

if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Nothing wrong with a 30d at all. Instead of buying a new body, y not get new lenses instead? they are what makes the difference in the first place.

I know how to use both of them, cause I've had a lot of time to play around with the XS also. It's just a matter of which one I should take. I'm not very serious about photography, I prefer to keep it as just a hobby.

get the 30d. it will have a better build quality than the XS anyways.

Anyway, late July I got my hands on a Tamron 90mm 2.8 SP Di macro lens. Had a blast with it until the AF to MF push-pull mechanism ____akied on itself. Returned it and got the Sigma 105mm 2.8 EX DG macro. Was a great lens, especially with the Kenko extension tubes. Finally decided after two months to move up to the Sigma 150mm 2.8 EX DG APO HSM and it was the best decision I made.

Jajaka! I'm finally getting comfortable with my D90. My skillsss are starting to show. :p

I've been eyeballing that location for months. I drive past it on the way to work everyday. I think it's bum territory or some black magic spot. We ended up finding a pile of bones...

But anyway, I took these as I was waiting for the subject. I did a shoot for this local guy with a really nice, sorta stanced G35. I'll get those up later.
