I got my Nikon D80 body in today and decided to snap some pics. Love the D80, its a bit heavier compared to the D40 and alot more buttons on the body to learn but im slowly starting to get the hang of it. Here's one of myself in B&W, i forgot to take the lense hood off and could of raised the ISO a bit more. It was taken with the D40 kit lense (18-55) and im in the process of getting a 18-105 VR once im done with my christmas shopping.

ok a question for all you guys that are pro with DSLR... what do you think of this offer for a newbie at DSLR world...

Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (Black)
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Digital-Camera-18-55mm-3-5-5-6/dp/B0012YA85A/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1228607740&sr=8-1

and if I get this what other accesories would you recomend?

thanks for the help!

Yanki01

Yanki01
12-06-2008, 11:54 PM
bhphoto.com has a used 9+ condition for $569 or a new one for $640. I would not go for that type of SD card amazon has, you'll want something fast. I have an SanDisk SD Extreme III and works very well.

i would go to your local camera store to get a feel on some DSLR's first. I held an XSi the other day and was very unhappy with the way the body felt compared to my D40. it doesnt feel well built to me?

try to get a feel of d60 or d80. try those in your list.
when i was looking around, i felt canon, nikon, and sony. then look at what you can afford. then, read up on lots and lots of different reviews on the one's that you like. then go from there.

snowromance
12-07-2008, 04:03 AM
if you are going to go for the entry level nikon...

out of the d40, d40x, d60... GO WITH THE D40. d40x and d60 are a total waste of the extra money they cost. especially the d60.

the best deal on the market right now if you insist on buying brand new concerning WHAT YOU GET for WHAT YOU PAY is the D40. $410 shipped.

I think I'm gonna go get one tomorrow. But then there's a deal on Amazon right now. $85 for the lens and a Tiffen filter AND free shipping AND a years subscription to a magazine, but you can take the $8 rebate for the mag. So, $85 - 8 = $77 shipped for the lens and a filter. Not bad..

Here's the link:

here is a tamron lens that seems to have outstanding reviews all over the internet, and looks like a worthy affordable lens for indoor shooting and at times outperforming the canon counterpart at nearly 1/3 of the price?

I am using a sigma lens on my Nikon and love it. I have only had one problem and that is because it went swimming when I fell into a canal while in Iraq.

It depends on the lens, but a lot of time third party lenses are just as good as a name brand.

Its my first prime lens and I realize im not to fond of prime lenses. You're too limited on photo composition and feels like it turns your camera into a point and shoot. It makes taking photos extremely easy.

Only time Ill be using this lens for is indoor poorly lit locations and portraits.

i hate how photobucket dumbs down the color when you upload pics. the red is a little bit lighter red than original. meh... here it is.

So, some Christmassy, I suppose. I volunteered at the Leonis Adobe Museum & they have a huge farm area so I got to help kids play with the animals & build gingerbread houses. I helped paint the animals coral and stuff, too, then we had an open house Christmas party for the neighborhood.

i LOVE flickr. i researched many sites before choosing flickr as my photo-home. everyone told me to get smugmug but it was just too "look at me i think im a professional" when people really aren't. black frames around your picture with a little watermark does not make you photos any better! lol.

the only thing i wish flickr did was have a size between medium and large. i want to be able to post photos places that are like 640 wide but am stuck with either 500 (too small) and 1024 (too large).

oh well, maybe one day im hoping they will add more sizes.

bluaeon
12-12-2008, 09:28 AM
i switched to flickr. IT IS a lot better than photobucket.

snow: what do you mean that they will add more sizes? can't you just upload the image size you want and go from there? i know i did that and they did not crop my image, unlike photobucket, that they have specific sizes that you have to go.

RnB180
12-12-2008, 09:38 AM
i have a question.
Ive been using flickr and it wasnt until this thread I heard about smugmug.

Im fairly new to the photography world but extremely familiar with the photoshop world.
I dont get it. whats the general rule of photography in terms of post processing?

Ive always thought minimal to no processing was what most photographers do? but when I look at popular rated photos on smugmug many of them have been run through photoshop and completely processed, altered and enhanced dramatically, but are incredibly beautiful and captivating to look at... Ive always thought photographers frowned upon heavy alterations? Was my thinking incorrect? Ive been working with photoshop long enough to know what there are heavy filters and alterations applied to a photograph.

I remember taking a digital imaging photo class and they told me it was frowned upon to do heavy alterations or to add or subtract from a photo something that wasn't there.
whats the street knowledge on this topic? im confused on what the ethics code is for the serious photographers world is?

ADRdesignCo
12-12-2008, 10:23 AM
Personally, about 95% of my photos are raw from the camera. i dont like doing post processing even though i know that they could help my shots dramatically. i think its all up to the photographer/editor depending on what he/she is trying to get accross in the picture.

Elijahtc
12-12-2008, 02:39 PM
all pro work is post processed like crazy. That is one of the main differences is cause amateurs don't know how to use PS. Also the main reason pros shoot in RAW format.

Since we're discussing hosts.. I don't like smug mug's lay out. Photobucket compresses. Flickr is great for a free host. Your own server does own all but I'd rather not pay for it at the level I'm at right now.
The only thing photobucket's got goin' for it is the instant copying.

i dont see an issue with post processing in the pro photographer world now.
the other night I was at an event a spoke with two pro photographers about the idea of post
processing. And here is what they told me.

There is nothing wrong with post processing all the pros do it.

now with me personally I post process my photos via adobe bridge and I find myself having to
alter exposure, hue, clarity and recovery light to make the photo look its best. Not to add to the photo but to correct levels in the photo. This is different from adding elements to a photo
that were never there in the first place.

Since Ive been learning how to use the camera a lot better I don't really find a need to edit
most of the photos I use now, but ill adjust something i.e. exposure anyway because even in a
good photo you can find something you can tweak to make it look better.

I suppose what I disagree with are photographers that are taking real life natural looking shots and adding elements into the photograph that were never there in the first place like light sources and so on in a nature shot. Which takes a nice look photo and makes it look flat out fake to anyone that knows how to use photoshop. Adjusting and fixing levels is fine, but if you start adding a fake beam of sunlight to the photo that wasnt there to highlight something in the photo or change the colors of the leaves and telling the viewer the photo is a
nature shot, I disagree with this.

i.e. taking pictures similar to something youd see in a newspaper or national geographic and
adding stuff to those types of journalistic/nature photos is a no no IMO.

now if the photos are meant to be glossy and consumerist type photos than everything goes
with post processing. So I suppose it depends on what target use of the photo is meant for.

So in short this is what I think
journalistic/nature shots, level corrections are alright, only to bring out the photo to its best.

consumerist photos everything goes ps the heck out of it.

Yup 10-20mm. I was typing on my blackberry so I didn't notice that. I shot with a D40x then upgraded to a D80 and now I have a D300. I have yet to take any real shots with the D300 since I'm still waiting for my new lens to come in.

I would go witht he D60 over the D40. It not just the MP boost though. I believe that the D0 also has the AF motor onboard so that you can use the HSM type lenses

Get the D70!!!! (If you're into lighting) You won't regret it.

Otherwise, I'd advise to get something bigger than the D40x unless you're not going to be that into it.

I've actually heard that the white lens has a purpose. like light reflects off of it instead of soaking into it like a black lens would thus creating crisper images cause there is no heat in the lens?

hrm in hind sight I think I shouldve gone with the 50mm 1.4 as opposed to the 50mm 1.8.
Im not feelin the plastic lens mount, and color in the photos.

The lens' color is far more desaturated than my 28-135. Another thing someone told me are that plastic lens mounts over time can shave off and fall onto the cameras sensors and other vital parts inside.

Its a nice lens for the money, but in hindsight I think I shouldve just gone with the 1.4 with the metal mount. I dont think the 1.8 is a lens id use for too long, When money issues improve I think ill pick up the 35mm 2.0 lens.

hey, any camera techies care to explan in laymans terms of what full body and cropped body is and how that affects the focal length number on the lens?

JOEinSD
12-18-2008, 08:05 AM
I don't know anything about crop factors, but I do know that the 50mm on a cropped body is equivalent to 80mm.

And I'd love to have the 1.4 over the 1.8, but financially, I can't at the moment.. =[

Elijahtc

full body sensor is a full frame sensor meaning the image sensor is the same size as a 35mm negative. A smaller size image sensor is far smaller in comparison so it cuts down on how much of the picture is actually seen through the lens.

Basically draw a 35mm square and inside that square draw one like 25mm. The 25mm square is what the smaller image sensors see.

So with a full frame sensor, when u use a 28mm lens u actually get 28mm.

WIth the smaller sensor a 50mm turns into an 80mm lens cause of the smaller sensor. the crop is like 1.63x i think. So any focal length u use, multiply it by 1.63 and that is the real focal length u will be shooting at. That is the reason for the "digital" lenses (ef-s). They are engineered to compensate for the smaller image sensor, so that u can actually use wide focal lengths.

Understand now?

very well put.. that is also why the full frame canon's are not compatible with the EF-S mount cause they just cannot focus at such short focal lengths

Actually I think the mount sits father back into the body so on a full frame sensor it would be touching the sensor. I may be wrong bout that. But no an EF-s lens won't fit a full frame sensor body. I chose a full frame sensor just because I like to shoot a lot of wide angle and I've always shot film so I already had the lenses for a full frame.
