I found this..

A zoom lens allows continuous shift of focal length without shifting the focus point. Because it delivers various angles of view, one lens can serve as multiples of fixed focal length lenses.

Standard Range Zoom

Standard zoom (28-80mm)

Telephoto zoom (80-210mm, 70-300mm, etc.)

Advanced Range Zoom

Wideangle zoom (19-35mm)

High-image-quality telephoto zoom (70-300mm)

Ultra telephoto zoom (200-500mm)

High-Power Zoom

Standard zoom (28-105mm)

Ultra-high-power zoom (24-135mm, 28-200mm,
28-300mm)

High-Speed Zoom

Wideangle zoom (17-35mm F/2.8-4)

High power zoom (28-75mm F/2.8, 28-105mm/2.8)

Telephoto zoom (70-210mm/2.8)

So a wideangle zoom is better than a telephotozoom?

And how significant is having a hood for your lenses?

the smaller the focal length number the more you can get in the picture.

full frame cameras like canon 5d and 1d are a standard. my 50d camera has a cropped sensor of 1.6.,

which means a real 35mm lens will look the way it should on a full frame lens, but since mine is a cropped sensor I get only a portion of the image of what a full 35mm lens should have in the image. the outside edges of the photo will be cropped out.

now since my lens is a factor of 1.6 it means i need to add roughly 6mm to every 10mm or so to get the real focal length.

let me explain a 35mm lens on a full frame camera will yield what a 35mm lens should within the frame of the picture. on a 1.6 cropped sensor, id get an image equivalent of roughly a 50mm lens on a full frame camera.

I hope this is right? if im incorrect someone please correct me. Im trying to explain this as simple as I can.

now I want a 24-70 over my 28-135 because the 24-70 has better glass, wider aperture, and since the 24-70 is an L series lens it stays the same aperture setting throughout the entire zoom range, as opposed to the 28-135 ef, that narrows the aperture as you increase the zoom.

why would I want a wide aperture lens (smaller the number the wider the aperture) this allows more light to enter the lens at a faster shutter speed. which equates to better photo in low light environments and the ability to create shallow dof easily. However on the downside, wider aperture also has a smaller area of focus. which means, sharp in the center blurry on the outside.

I hope this helps,
cheers!

ok ok,

so with the 24-70 you can zoom in and it wont really blure it will keep the same focus as opposed to zooming in with the 28-135 it will only focus on certain areas?

RnB180

btw john, from the looks of it, you seem to like taking pics relatively close up. if thats the case, stay away from 70-300mm type lenses for now. I have one and I rarely use it because it requires nearly a 5' distance from my subject and its so tightly framed at 70mm on a cropped sensor,
make sure you look at what the closest focus distance is on the lens.

28-135 on a cropped sensor is actually a very good focal length for almost everything.

scion_jon
01-08-2009, 08:07 AM
ok cool

guess it's safe to say its nice to have all kinds of lenses lol

RnB180

ok ok,

so with the 24-70 you can zoom in and it wont really blure it will keep the same focus as opposed to zooming in with the 28-135 it will only focus on certain areas?

no,

the 24-70 will have the same aperture throughput the entire zoom. while the 28-135 wont. what this means is that if I set the 24-70 to 2.8 f stop. it will stay 2.8 through out the zoom. which means I dont have to worry about readjusting the settings everytime I take pictures in doors.

on the 28-135 if I zoom the aperture number keeps increasing automatically, which means less light gets in as I zoom, which means if I dont readjust the shutter speed and iso everytime I decide to change the focal length, my pictures come out underexposed.

now the reason why the 24-70 does this is because its canons top end series called "L" which is a feature found on on L lenses.

tell me what you guys think, critisim welcomed!

also, ive seen this before of people doing this with some of there pictures, i think its called HDR where you take a few pictures of a high, low and medium contrast and a program blends them togather. is there any free program to composite the pictures in to one?

mattTc: there is no free program for HDR that i know of. the two programs that i know that does HDR are either photomatix or photoshop. both have free trial for download, but for photomatix, they leave a watermark when you convert an image into HDR. i am not sure if photoshop leaves watermark or they dont activate it for a trial version. i have both program and i find photoshop is a little bit easier to use than photomatix but photomatix is better due to more options than photoshop, in my opinion. i have to start playing with photomatix to get than hang of it.

hey man all you have to do to beat that is HDR a photo or photos with the program. then flip the pictures upside down and do the same exact editing again. then go into photoshop and flip the upside down one to be right side up. now the watermark is upside down. blend the first picture over the second one (originally upside down, now right side up) BAM... no watermark on your photo.

what if you get a flash, and point it at a 90 degree angle, I heard that helps illumniate what your taking a pic of with out washing it out cause it bounces off the cieling

I want the 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 but theyre so freakin expensive.

I was thinking about getting the 70-200 f4 because they can be had for like $600 online but have no IS.

But if I can get clean shots like that I might get the cheap L, because I cant afford the IS wide ap versions.

Im hoping I can get away with no is and f4 if I use it for daytime shoots and 1/2000th of second. hah.

gotcha, in regards to the fill flash I like to have high dynamics in the photo, even if it means crushing the blacks and whites. I try not to crush them completely but I like have the extremes on both ends. fill flash may reveal more detail in dark areas, but might flatten the photo a bit more wouldnt it? but than youve been in the game for a long time so I'll take your input seriously.

blown out whites are horrid...and i hope you're not shooting at noon...

early morning or late afternoon FTW

the subject is supposed to catch your eye, not your blown out background...so a super white background won't work unless you're doing high key photos

Thanks for the input, just means I need more practice. Gotta keep shooting and aspiring for better results.

when normal people like my pics it doesnt really help me, it's when the pro's tell me your pics suck is when i'll get better at it :)

meh im a digital arts major, Ive taken photography, digital photography, design, rendering, graphic design, advanced art, illustration and have done professional work. DSLR im relatively new to. Composition, design imaging, Ive been studying and working with it on and off for the last 10 years or so.

In regards to photography outside of this thread, I get constant input from people I know in the professional field. But when I get someone that tells me something is wrong Im all ears and listen carefully because I may learn more than what I do now. Most of the time, I break the rules of photography on purpose, because I have a very thuroughly ingrained knowledge of composition completely and to its highest form from years of training (This is why Im so picky about not cropping a photo, and compositing the image correctly from the camera). :) So I get bored and start either breaking the rules of composition to think outside the box or from boredom, variety or flat out laziness.

I work with what I have. And my belief is, If im gonna have to deal with a bad element in a photo or set up, I might as well take it all the way and do it on purpose and make it part of the photo. The last class I took was a digital photo class, mainly for learning more photoshop, but just recently I decided to bite the bullet and pick up a decent dslr.

In hindsight, I regret getting the 50d instead of waiting for the 5d, but I was kinda forced into the 50d because the new 5d wasnt out yet (full frame much more appealing for image quality, i work on a pixel to pixel level) and I had to use it for an event that was coming up and I was pegged as the multimedia go to guy.

I was sitting behind a computer working with digital images for years, but I find being out on the field much more appealing than sitting in front of a computer screen hahahaa

the only thing is that to get the good stuff it costs a lot of $$$ which is something I dont have.

still learning the ins and outs of the 50d and its limitations. Not very impressed that the 50d gets noisey images above 640 iso. >:(

but yea I have friends in the pro field that work movies as compositors and pro photographers that always give me input. So my ears are always open to learn something new.

I really would like to avoid explaining myself however, its easier to just post pics and look at pics haha.

why is it that whenever elijah is in a thread, homosexual comments run rampant?

u ever notice that they are usually directed to Don and Jon? I wasn't supposed to say anything but Don and Jon are lovers. There it is finally out in the open.

And Tina, I don't like the poop shoot. That is EXIT ONLY in my book. ha ha

at least that camera has a better lens than the point/shoots and allows for some manual adjustments but its no replacement for a real SLR :P just playing! the second pic looks a bit blurry... weak lens FTL! i like the last 2.. ive been playing around with night shots cause i seem to be quite weak with the night shots...

Yeah, the camera is really nice for what it is. I don't shoot in anything but manual modes and it is more compact then a dslr (well, for the lenses I would need) so it's nice for what I use it for. My next cam will be a dslr though, for sure.

The second pic is a bit blurry, yes... I just enjoyed the shot so I thought I would post it anyway. The reason for the blurriness is simply the fact I was rushing. We had to catch a show and I basically dialed in settings and went for it. One of the few blurry ones I had gotten honestly. The image stabilizer built into the cam is great, even at 20x zoom.

learn the skills and concepts on a mini-slr (what i call your type of camera) and the transition to a DSLR will be easy. you know the composition concepts, exposure concepts, etc so all you need to do is learn how to change lenses without getting dust in the body!

hmm.. i just realized mini-slr isnt really an accurate name.. since it doesnt have the reflex mirror its not a SLR? and i dont like the name super-zoom... hmmm who wants to come up with a better name?

I suppose, but I dont know any pro photographer that will take just one shot at a time. all the ones I know snap every chance they get, Id say for me every 5 photos Ill nail 1 keeper. It does take more skill to take a good shot once. But rarely will I see anyone do that unless they are forced to, its just smarter to take multiple shots of the same photo and picking out the best one. Any serious photographer will already know what f stop/iso/shutter speed to use for a given occasion and while snapping composing the photo is second nature and they take the shot without giving a second thought. I dont even like using manual (but I do know how and do use it) Id rather use av and tv, simply because a lot of the time im at areas with erratic variables when it comes to lighting (stage lighting) and I simply dont have the time to muss and fuss the settings every 2 pictures. In this case I'd be losing opportunities.

I know there are image benefits that can be had with film, but, for what I use it for, im not from the old school way of thinking. IMO the convenience of digital versus film for my uses outweigh the image benefits of film.

It matters on what type of photography. Which imo digital is very convenient. Its nice to have to skill to do well with film cameras, but how often do you use film over digital, don? :)
