Canon DSLR owners post up your best work!

Here's mine!

Nice. I love the fireworks shot and the shots of the girls. I recently got a Canon Rebel XSI and I am still learning it. I will have to post some of the pics up later tonight.

What ISO rate did you take the firework pictures at ? A Newbie XSI User my self

Ro_Ja
09-06-2008, 05:14 AM
haha I honestly have NO idea. I was trying to figure out myself while the fireworks were going. I was just pressing random buttons on my camera trying to figure out what settings worked. I ended up taking 60 pictures that night and only 3 turned out.

Here are some of my favorites so far, some of them lost quality due to the resize and I obviously can't post the originals:) I normally use a gallery but I wanted people to be able to look at them here. They are still kind of large to some people I guess, they are 1024x768 which is tiny to me:)

Cool! I almost didn't see that weird lookin' bug in your third picture! o_0

Oh and I forgot about the cool feature Flickr has about saving camera settings in the picture information! For the fireworks picture, these are the settings.

Exposure: 30 sec (30)
Aperture: f/14
Focal Length: 24 mm
ISO Speed: 100

Yeah, that thing was weird, first chameleon paint job style bug I have ever seen:)

Nice, I can't wait to pick up some new lenses, but that's a ways down the road for me. Right now I just have the 18-55mm, but that has worked out fine for most of the pictures I have taken. I will likely only pick up a telephoto and a wide angle/fish eye lens.

^ Look in the upper right corner of Cuthbert's 3rd pic.

Yeah, I have my kit lens and a 70-250mm. I just want a wide angle to complete my lens collection. I want to work on getting an external flash too.

^ No problem man! Everyone has to start somewhere. You don't have to have a big expensive camera to take nice pictures. Just keep practicing! :)

In other news, I changed the title to include EVERYONE! All DSLRs are welcome to post!

Yanki01, that's one steady hand you have. I tried that same shot a while back and it come out blurry. :\ It looked clear, but the text on my lens and the big Canon logo on my camera came out pretty blurred.

I think you just have to mess with the focus points settings or take the pic on a faster shutter speed.. steady hand does help though especially on poor lighting conditions.. :P

The problem with the whole Nikon vs Canon thing, is that there are such slight differences, that it all comes down to personal preference. I picked Nikon over Canon for the simple fact that Canon did not have an entry level SLR that offered use of an SD card.

Besides, most pros will tell you, it has nothing to do with your equipment.

Elijahtc
09-09-2008, 03:30 PM
i chose Canon cause i have always used them and am just more accustomed to their equipment. As far as quality of equipment it does help to have the right tools and to have a quality tool to make a good shot. even the glass in a lens can make a HUGE difference in color and sharpness.

I love my Canon 5d but i wouldn't be apposed to trying a Nikon of equal quality.

i just wish i had more material to shoot. everything in memphis is so run down and we have absolutely no architecture at all. sucks sooo bad. most of the areas that area worth shooting have hobos and drug dealers so it's not a place i wanna take $4,000 worth of equipment to.

Yes it does help, but the point I'm trying to make, is that a great photographer doesn't need a $10,000 camera with a $40,000 lens to take a good picture, they'll make it work with whatever they have. Equipment just makes things easier.

yeah i saw ur point. i am making the same one. nice equipment makes it soo much easier. ha ha

I pride myself on not photoshopping anything i do. All my work is right from the camera.

what most beginners don't understand is that even a pro photographer takes 100's of photos a day and only end up using like 5 ha ha.

I took 1082 pictures at Summit Point (shots of the PTuning cars), I used maybe 80 of them?

What lens were you using for the Auto Show pictures? My standard f3.5 lens couldn't let enough lighting in for me to take a good clean shot. I was hovering between 1/10 and 1/20 for all the shots, so half of them came out like crap... :(.

i was still using my canon 10d with a really crappy 28-80mm starter kit lens. think it was a 3.5-5.6 lens. i was opened up to 3.5 and no idea of the shutter speed. sure i was shooting at 800iso tho. just a steady hand.

I didn't play with the ISO at all. I got the camera like a week before, so I had no clue how to use it yet. I left ISO at 200 for everything, so it wanted me to take slower shots. Now that I have my f1.8 lens, I'll be able to take shots at an Auto Show without a problem.

Elijahtc
09-09-2008, 04:38 PM
if u boost the ISO and depending on ur camera u should be able to shoot at 800 without much noise.

Vincenzo

Though, not enough can be said about having a steady hand and good posture.

CarbonXe

^ It's not wise to take on Vince.

Depending on how much lighting (or lack of lighting, I should say) the ISO won't always effect the shot. I would just prefer keeping it at 200, and using aperture and shutter speed to get the correct exposure, rather than having the camera 'compensate' for lack of lighting with ISO. That's why I got a f1.8 lens, makes a HUGE difference. Plus it was only $150 (I think).

Elijahtc
09-09-2008, 04:46 PM
nice. my fisheye is my fastest lens. wish my 24-105 was faster but it has GREAT glass. I just boot my ISO cause with the 5d i can go to like 1600 without noise pretty much. once i get to 3200 it gets noticable tho.

You mean the lake shot?

Me and my friend (Evo, post a shot of it in front of the lake earlier) were trying to figure out a good spot to take some scenic photos, so I thought of the lake, then on the way over I realized that theres a small gravel parking lot right in front of my friends house. So I setup the camera on the opposite side of the road in the middle of someones lawn, set the settings on the camera, pushed the button and watched 10 cars drive by. Waited for no cars...hit the button...cars...It got so annoying, then I finally managed to get it with only 2 cars (you can see the streaks, which look cool but when 10 cars go by, it's all just a big blur). It turned out nice because the trees set a good frame for the shot, then I just chopped the tree tops and the road off to give it that wide-angle look :D.

Elijahtc

It just takes time. I've only been shooting for about 6 months, and I know all the settings on the camera now, but I still don't know how to take different style shots. One that I've wanted to work on figuring out, is getting a clear shot of the car, with streaks behind it. I know it involves a delayed flash, but I just haven't been able to figure it out :(.

Yeah, I've been playing around with exposure lately. I've noticed that slightly over exposed shots with my f1.8 lens REALLY bring out the color in things (PTuning xA engine bay shot for example). I've also been having fun with long exposure shots, they just come out so much better when you let in a little amount of light over a long time, rather than a lot of light over a short time.

Elijahtc
09-09-2008, 06:39 PM
yeah long exposures make colors so much more rich and vibrant. especially on a low ISO.

Tina, learn to use manual mode. You might find it intimidating at first, but it's the only real way to shoot. You can control all the variables that way.

I know, I've only had the camera for a few weeks, so I'm still learning. 40 hrs of work a week on top of 22 hrs of school a week is killing my play time.

Yeah, that's perfectly fine. I should be getting my tC soon, so lemme know when you're in town and you have some time to kill. ^ Just upload them to photobucket or something, and it will do the resizing for you.

It seems like photobucket/imageshack uses the same/similar resizing algorithm, because I still notice quality loss using both of them. I would use flickr, but isn't it a pay site now? I wouldn't pay for it when I can use a gallery for free, just have to refer people to it which doesn't work as well on forums:)

Vincenzo
09-10-2008, 03:15 PM
You can use Flickr without paying (many people do), you just have some restrictions. I've been a Pro (paid) member of Flickr for four years and I've never had to think twice about renewing my membership. It pays for itself over and over again and just yesterday someone who found me on Flickr hired me for a job (Philadelphia Police Dept.)

Sure it's something you have to pay for, but if you're serious about your photography, consider it an investment. It has been for me. Also, membership which is a nominal fee (25/yr) includes more than just unlimited storage:

I couldn't wait to get out of there, but on the way back home to Germany I kind of started to miss it. I was in the Air Force. Worked in Logistics/Weapons the first 2.5 years packing NBC gear, gas masks, training others on weapons, how to shoot, rapid reloads, stuff like that. Then I cross trained into TACP/JTAC, Air Force members embedded with Army units calling in CAS. Did that for 3 years. Was in Det. 2/1 ASOS in Germany. I miss that job! Almost went back in for a job as SERE instructor, but opted to give Autobody Repair/Automotive Painting a shot.

Girls like me are a dime a dozen, trust me, I'm nothing special & I'm sure you'll find someone.

But in all seriousness, I miss playing bass. I haven't played in years. I used to be in a band called 5 Senses Massacre, & I was in my middle school's worship team, haha. I need to pick up some serious hobbies, life's a downer right now, & 40 hrs of work + 19 hrs (was 22 hours but I couldn't get into one of my classs) of schooling doesn't leave much for playtime; but now I'm sounding like a broken record since I've mentioned that already.

Why don't you go on a road trip to somewhere that does? See where you can go in a few hours and do a day trip there.

wow i think this thread is setting a record for most pages without a single bit of hating or crap talking.

Let's try and keep it that way. :D My intent behind this thread was to find a way to have some peace on SL by giving us all something to appreciate, and I'm glad it's doing what I planned it to do.

And that sucks about gas. Just focus on random stuff like Ace83 said and I'm sure you can get some good pictures.

I went out to that twice while i was living in AZ. They don't let you bring any cameras or anything out onto the walk.

Don't know if they paved the road to it yet or not, but when I went, it was about a 14 mile long dirt road out to the place. I had fun doing a little rallying with the tC :D.

Whaaatt? I thought it was just a walkway that jutted out from the side of the canyon. I had heard before that it was on the south rim right by where all the parking/etc was. Not allowing cameras on there is ridiculous, you could get some amazing shots from that thing. How long ago was this that you were there?

Not bad. That set turned out a bit better than your usual "focus on random things" pictures. lol

Just keep practicing and know how to control the ISO, shutter speed, and other variables in different environments. Decent start though. Oh, and having access to Photoshop for fixing some things like exposure, color, and contrast helps too.

That's because all the recoil is thrown straight back into the stock instead of over the top of the stock so it doesn't create a force that acts like a lever like an M14 would.

what do yall think guys, get rid of the Nikon D40 and snatch up a Canon XSi? Im thinking about it but IDK if i want to spend $700 when i purchased my D40 practally brand spanking new (slightly used) for $350? Nothing wrong with the D40, i guess because its new and i want it? More focus points are a plus?

Tell me why i shouldnt get it and keep the D40?

Elijahtc

spend the money on new lenses. it will feel like a new camera. trust me. when i got my fisheye it felt like a new camera to me.

Yanki01
09-15-2008, 02:22 AM
IDK, just a thought. You know how you get those dumb idea's in your head and they wait for someone to tell you not to do it. well, thanks to you 2 ill keep the D40 for a good while.

I might snatch up the 50mm f/1.8 sometime soon. Got a small bonus at work for helping board up windows and getting sand bags for Hurricane Ike when we didnt even get a drop of rain from it. So i have more than enough for the lense, Hoya filter and take the GF out to eat! Hopefully by next month i make the purchase.

Ro_Ja

Elijahtc

i've never really used a prime lens other than my fisheye. not really big on having to move just to recompose the shot. But most prime lenses are cheaper and faster. depending on what equipment u have u could always try and get a tripod, flash, slave flash, new lens like a fisheye, extra battery, bigger memory card, etc etc

Yanki01
09-15-2008, 03:46 AM
well, i have a decent samsonite tripod, a SanDisk Extreme III 2GB SD card, a Hoya UV and a Hoya linear polarizing filter and a nice bag. I think ill get a decent flash sometime by the end of the year?
