so i have to start with a story. when i was 7 years old me and my mom got hit by a drunk driver in a mustang going about 114 miles per hour. i had to be air evaced to the hospital ect. ect. anyways i now turn 18 in a month and today i was informed i have a bank account with 25 grand in it waiting for me when i turn 18 because my dad hired me an attourney and sued the guy.'
now im thinking im going to keep 20 of it in there and invest it.
but that means i have 5,000 bucks to spend on my car if i wanted to.
its already got suspension, a paintjob, rims, and a system, what should i do with this money. and i dont want to airbag it.
HELP! :D :D :D :D

Please oh please don't spend $5k on your car man. Spend $3k on your first semester of college, TAKE A VACATION, Go to Toys R Us and spend $200 on toys and go to your local childrens hospital and donate the gifts to the kids there who got medivac'd in. Keep whatevers left outta the spending $ split between your checking and savings account gaining intrest, but there when you need it! That's my 2 cents. Saw someone get a huge chunk of change like that before for the samething.... that was 10 years ago. His 97 mitsu eclipse went from beater to beauty in like 6 months... had $25k + invested in it, and now here in 2008 it's in a junk yard.

If you really want to spend it on the car, then use it to help pay it off. Don't put any type of charger on a stock motor, you'll blow a seal/gasket or worse and make it less reliable. Just really really think about it or you'll look back and think, da*n I was dumb. At least you said you want to save most of it. Oh, and you really shouldn't be listening to most of the younger people on here, most of them will say blow it on this or that. Ask your family what they think, not a bunch of strangers that know nothing about you.

Or pay off your car. Once those two are covered, mod your car as much as you want.

If you love your ride--even if you just like it a lot--use the money towards paying it off. Once you have it paid off you will have plenty of money to spend on it and other things. Besides, if you spend 5k that was given to you on your car you are less likely to appreciate it. Just my opinion.

i would say it's a bad idea to just throw $5k into your box like you are saying. you already have plenty of goodies done to it. it looks nice doesnt it? how happy are you going to be knowing you threw away $5k just to what, have it sit an inch lower? put a turbo in and make it almost as fast as most other stock cars on the road?
with what you say you've already done, there's no need to throw away $5k like that. your money though. im with everyone that says save it and invest some.
not to mention that is a nice down payment on your first home! although you probably are not thinking about it now, that will become very important to you in the next 5 years or so. i know it is for me.

Spend it on getting out of debt, or investing (education, house, etc). Both will pay off in the long run. Maybe buy a few toys, but don't go nuts.
Of course, I can say this having never come into that kind of money when I was your age.
Just don't do anything stupid!

Then get yourself an air-ride kit, and a set of aggressive fitting wheels, that require a 5x114.3 conversion to make sure your set yourself apart.
A set of bb headlights, and you should be good for a little while. And what I just mentioned will put you around the $4000 mark. So you still have another grand to put in the interior for ICE and what not.

Spending 5k on your car really doesn't sound like much.
But I would say, if that 25k is all the money you have. then don't go out and blow 20% of your net worth on mods that will only ever get you 30 cents on the dollar, (if your lucky)
Pay off you car if it's not paid for already, student loans are good to avoid.
Spend like only $1500 on toys just to get that out of your system. Then invest it and forget that the money's even there.

what he said so far..
car is paid for
has money set aside towards a house
college is paid for,
doe not want airbags
does not want it to go faster,
already has a system,
already has wheels,
so all you basically repeating what he has already said, is awesome!
sorry for the rant, just I scrolled down in this thread thinking I was going to actually see some suggestions, and all I read is what he said he already has done.
so the only thing I can suggest is maybe a body kit, or do some more with the interior, like redoing the seats, maybe a sunroof.

Don't blow it on junk you don't really want just because you have it. If it was money you'd worked for and saved, what would you do? You may have tuition already paid, but you can easily spend $5k+ during four years at college. 17 seems a bit young to worry about setting aside money for a house. If you're saving most of it, keep it somewhere other than a savings account earning 2%.

mannnn THAT must be nice!!!! lol
i'd say def don't blow all $5000 on your car. is there one thing that you've reallllly wanted but said "nah that's too much money" or "i have to save up for it"? well i'd say do whatever that is, it'll make you really happy. the rest put towards college or textbooks or something that already having the money will make your life a million times easier

I haven't logged on for a while, or even looked at the site, but I was here, noticed this post, and felt compelled to reply...
Twenty-five grand is a lot of money when you're 17. You might want to spend it on stuff for your car or go on a vacation.
DON'T.
When you turn 18, a number of investment options open up for you. If you want full accessibility to the money, put it into a taxable individual or Trust account and invest in some mutual funds. If you want to save for retirement, maybe open a Roth IRA.
I suggest mutual funds for the time being because while investing in individual stocks can be highly lucrative, it can and will be highly dangerous to somebody who has no idea what they're doing. The market activity on Wall Street this year proves that you can lose everything overnight.
If your family has an accountant or financial advisor, start with them. If not, call an investment company - talk about your wants and needs with your money. You can call my company, Vanguard, but Fidelity or T. Rowe Price are also excellent choices with a very diverse range of mutual funds and account types to choose from.
If you want, send me a private message and I can give you some ideas, pointers, and directions about where to go for more information, but I cannot and will not tell you what to invest in... I'm not licensed to do that and it wouldn't be ethical.

Dang, you 20 year olds all sound so . . . old.
But I agree! Your car is already nice. How much moe do you want to put into it, knowing you'll never get that money back?
Take your best boys (or girls) and treat them to a lux weekend somewhere. Pay for the box seats, the dinner pick up their drinks. Be a seriously big spender like you never could.
Put the money into them and they'll pay you back more than another car mod.
Spoken like a true parent.

Considering all you said about the car/ college etc. being payed for, you are keeping 20 in there. I love all the advice your getting here and im all about donations. But i say if your going to donate some, donate it all. 5k will pay for a nice re-model of a childrens play room at the hospital. You say you are turning 18 so I doubt you have much debt so i think you should do whatever you feel comfortable doing. If that means spending it on your car then enjoy. Just take into consideration materials dont last forever...

You've been given a very rare gift that will enable you to become a very rich man, if you're careful. I'm serious.
Since this is 'found' money -- money you didn't know you had -- put it ALL in a reasonable mutual fund. By the time you are 55 years old, if you've earned 7% or so annually, you will have accumulated $3.0 million dollars.
$3 million, my friend.
I'm serious. Do the math.
BTW, if you decide to spend the $5K and invest the other $20K, by the time you are 55 years old you will have $2.4 million. That means, for the pleasure of dropping $5,000 on a car you'll keep for a year or so, you'll have cost yourself $600,000 in the long run.
You can set you, your family and your descendants up for life if you invest all the money and wait to spend it until you're ready to retire.
Don't miss this chance -- opportunities to get truly, truly rich don't come around often.

Actually, what crashdad says is true. Invest conservatively - no get rich quick schemes - and you could retire young and comfortable. Don't fool yourself thinking if you spend it now you'll replace it in a couple years. The years you lose now making interest make all the difference later on. Use any investment calculator and you'll see.
Listen to crashdad! Your car will be in the scrapyard in 8 years anyway!

what makes you think that he does not plan on keeping his car for more then a year?
I see your math, I agree that it will work and its a good idea, BUT why does it have to be about getting rich? what if he loves his car and thats what makes him, happy? isn't THAT more important then making money? spending it on something that you enjoy, and makes you happy?
So I guess I was a fool, when I got some money when my mom died, cause I bought a second xB?

Of course it's not about getting rich for rich's sake. Money truly does not buy happiness -- although I've been poor, and I've been rich, and rich is a lot more fun!
My point was: since this money was totally unexpected, he has a great opportunity to do something totally unique. Invest the money -- then live your life as you had planned, get married and have some kids if that's your thing, enjoy your car(s), work hard, play harder, do some good in someone's life. Then, when you're middle-aged (and it will come faster than you think), you'll be able to kick back and enjoy the fruits of your wise investment, and -- who knows -- maybe really help change someone's life.

HELP! :D :D :D :D
save the money man... later on in life it will come in handy... i wouldnt invest any, just keep it safe in a CD (at the bank) making a little interest... maybe one day you might need it for college or to start a business
having money in the bank is a powerful thing man... i like to call it ____ you money because with what i have in the bank i could tell my boss ____ you tomorrow and quit without worrying about ____ for a long time... this enables me to start a business at some point (which I am looking into) and also makes life a lot less stressfull because i dont worry about money... i had 600 stolen from me in the same month i had to pay a 500 deductible for my insurance and a credit card bill that was 2500... sure some of those things sucked but the money part wasn't a big deal because i had it in the bank
the average person lives paycheck to paycheck with little to no reserve to fall back on if they are in a jam... ive seen people with college educations get ____ed over in a short amount of time... this one dude switched jobs and shortly after doing so he got laid off (this new company did not disclose that they were in financial trouble when they hired him).... since he had been there a short period of time he was not eligible for unemployment... the economy there (michigan) was ____ so he had a hard time finding another job... his truck got repo'ed, he got evicted and had nowhere to go... at one point he was riding a bus just to have a place to sleep... he had a rough few months AS A HOMELESS PERSON before someone found him another job
this ____ is very real and can happen to a lot of people... thats whats so scary about this economy (and why so many houses are being foreclosed on)... people live a lifestyle they really (either can't afford or...) can barely afford and when bad ____ happens they have to rely on friends or family to bail them out or they get ____ed... this money you have is protection from all that... independence my man is a great thing... take that for what its worth and keep the money in the bank... i assure you there will be some point in the future when you will be glad that you did

I know that. I read that. He STILL NEEDS to put ALL 25K towards the house tho. Not waste it on an economy car. Maybe if it was still stock, put some wheels on it but he has already modded it.
i dont NEED to do anything, this is a forum about scions and probably like 85% of topics have to do with spending money on your car. so if your here to offer advice i dont really want/need then just stop posting :)
spending money on your car is not wasting it if its something you love doing.Exactly right to a point. Don't ask questions if you don't want the truth and others opinions. You have alread spent good money on your car. You wanted opinions and that is what I gave! You are still so young. You have no clue about life yet. Do what you want with your money and don't ask others opinions any more if you aren't gonna listen. You'll understand what I'm saying after you grow up.

i agree Jeff, but he was not asking what to do with ALL of the money. He was only looking for ideas for stuff to do with 5K ON HIS CAR, that was the question. not "what should I do with all of it?" or "should I even spend it on my car?"

He said "if he wanted to". Now if he said he definitely was going to spend the 5K that would have been different. Still isn't smart but it's his money to pi$$ away as he likes.
I don't give a F@%* anymore!
Both you guys have alot of growing up to do. :nails:

either way, money comes and goes, an opportunity to be able to get something nice done to your car doesnt happen as much. i really dont care how mature you think i am or what i should do with MY money. its not the only money i have or will be able to have, but seriously this thread is about what i should do with MY car, and if you wanna sit on here and b!@%* about how im not spending my money i honestly dont give a rats @$$, ill just ignore the stupid remarks from you and listen to the people who actually have a real clue how to answer my question. so go ahead and reply and tell me how young, immature, and stupid i am because i could care less, i already have enough money and then some for college and a little bit more for a house on top of this money i just got, so im going to do something nice for myself with it wether you think i should or not.
now if anyone has some real suggestions about what they think would be a cool thing i can do with it then feel free to post, if not then feel free to make yourself look like an idiot by trying to tell me to do something im not going to do, its just a waste of energy typing it all out because i really dont care.

tires should not be that big of a deal unless you are running some off the wall wide tires, ha ha
you should be fine, with little to no no probs,
have you looked into what kit you want?
do you want to be as low as you can go? or just low?

buy a bike
travismeisenzahl
09-22-2008, 10:36 PM
as low as i can go preferably unless its going to be like way more expensive.
and i havent looked into a kit yet.
and @ Zsanz: i would get a bike but i live in az and its way dangerous on bikes out here. drivers suck, im 17 and probably atleast 10 times better than 75% of the older drivers on the road.

the best bang for your buck would be the new digital Easy Street kit from ScionPro.
http://www.scionpro.com/cart/product_info.php?cPath=44&products_id=452
or you could order most of the same kit from Randode. Its not digital, but is also a little less in cost, but then could upgrade the rear bags to his billet ones, and be back at the same as ScionPro.
http://randode.com/store/product70.html
and with you be "local" to Randode, I would go with him, and have him install it for you, he is the man when it comes to lowering xBs.
there is my recommendations.

definitely.
randodes got some tight stuff.

I only read the first page, so sorry if this has been repeated, but I vote for a custom paint job and a lip kit. Set yourself apart, maybe add a FFF and an aftermarket spoiler to accent your new kit. (that's probably what I'd do anyway)
Or hell, get a sunroof installed! Who doesn't want a sunroof?

i say get a nice bike. itll run at 1k at most, and a good bike in college = awesome!
Not to threadjack, but for a college bike, I don't think a Freeride/DH would be of much use, unless you're going to school somewhere halfway up the rockies.. :P
Hell, that Boxxer front fork runs about $700 on its own.. the rear shock is...not all that great, although it is made by Fox. and the Kona Stinky runs about $2500 on its own.
That's a nice '05, tho. :P
Thousand dollar bike? that would get you something in the range of This from Kona. (http://www.konaworld.com/09_hoss_c.cfm)
As for the money, since I actually read the entire thread, I'd say, (personal opinion here), Finish your lighting, get some more custom paint to go along with yer stripes, and (even tho I know you said your stereo's complete), switch things up audio wise... like, if you're running SPL, go SQ.
